Patch 1.21 bugs & problems.

I am using Malas Map with changes if I install the new patch 1.121f will the changes still be there. Someone on another thread said that the Mod they created in the Civ3mod.bic file were changed to the new patch and when he tried to change the values back the new patch would NOT allow any changes to the .bic file.
Since Marlas map resides in different folder then the Civ3mod.bic file will the above happen,(change marlas map etc) if I install the patch?

I have only used Marla's map with graphic changes such as:

Nemos queue mod
Smiley faces - pop heads
Shankyburns -resourses

(Applogies for mis-spellings)

not Mod Pack changes.

I would expect some of these will need to be modified to work with the new patch.

First few times I played with new patch (anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour) no problems.

Today I played for a couple of hours and got the 'error in SOUND.DLL' error and game crashed. Reloaded the game and everything was fine. Finally quit and when back at the desktop, the menu bar at the bottom of the screen (for Windows ME) was gone. I have to hit the 'windows' key to shut down. Both of these errors occured (rarely) in v1.17f and earlier patches, so not really a new bug.

But then when I did go to shut down I got the message 'program is not responding' window. Was unable to 'End Task', and 'Wait' for program to close did nothing. Had to eventually pull the plug.

Windows ME
Compaq Presario
1.2 GHZ AMD Athlon
256 RAM
SoundMax Digital Audio

Your problem actually is more Windows ME it is the most unstable OS Microsoft has ever released. Do yourself a favor and pick up windows XP you will be surprised at the ease of use and how well it performs. Some places OEM for $99.00. Not to say that civ3 has some problems, I have not had one crash after installing the patch. Running the Balancer mod too without a hitch. :) Sound error is another problem with certain cards under ME. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've heard plenty of complaints about XP. The bug doesn't happen often enough (maybe once every 20 or so hours of actual gameplay) for me to bother spending $99 on it. And in probably a couple of months there will be a new version of windows out...at least we get 'free upgrades' with Firaxis. :)

I had Win Me on my machine and upgraded to XP when it came out. I found there were far fewer problems with XP. I HATED Me with a passion because it was so full of bugs (or just sloppy programming).

As long as your machine is less than a year old, upgrade it to Win XP. It's worth it! It could solve some of those Civ 3 problems.

OK I've looked into this problem. Apparently Civ3Edit has some issues with non-English OS versions. Try this one. It should give you English menus and non-crashing scenario properties.

Thank you , now it works! :goodjob:

When a city is in civil disorder, it no longer shows the food surplus in the City Display screen.

This is very tiresome because it means you have to do a manual calculation yourself to find out how many citizens you can turn into entertainers to solve the problem. I discovered this in the civil disorder during anarchy (govt change) but it happens after you get the new govt type too.

For instance, it used to be when the city was in civil disorder (you know...the folks are unhappy) and there was a food surplus of say 2 then you could say..fine I just change one citizen who was producing 2 food to entertainer...job done (probably..yeah I know sometimes it takes more than one entertainer). Now you have to start calculating....

This is a bug as far as I'm concerned.

AFAIK, it has always been like that. Or at least, it was that way with the previous patch, and it still is. Maybe it was something they changed in the previous patch, but it's not exclusively new to this one.

What I know for sure is that it might be annoying, but I can see why, during a revolution/civil disorder, no one works so you can't really know how much surplus you have, hehe.

What's wrong with Windows ME? I've also heard that Windows XP doesn't work too well with MODS. Seems like 98 is the best to go with.

Windows ME is buggy
Windows XP hates DOS
Windows 3.1 Lets not go there

Windows 98SE is probably the best version of windows out there.

Also, on the Add/Delete button thing. I know, as well as many others, that in order to successfully add a unit or improvement, that you have to add and change many files and that the editor will not do this for you. I understand getting rid of the buttons so people who dont understand this wont accidentally crash their games.

BUT, I and several others know which files to edit, what files to add into what folders. I dont mind spending 25-30 minutes just to add one unit. I feel it is worth it.

Please release a version of the editor with the buttons so that we can continue modding. This is my only problem with the new patch.

Hello!

Um, I don't know if this is a new patch bug or not, but it never happened before, so...

Workers don't change to their more modern version- although their picture in the build menu has. It's not a big deal, but it looks better when they modernize.

Anyone else get this problem?

ok, I posted the thread HERE
because I was not sure if it was patch related or not...But I am fairly convinced it is. I have been having problems with not being allowed to upgrade my units. There is a screen shot at the above link. My city IS connected to the capital, and IS getting the appropiate resources. The onlI have only tried to upgrade my spearman and my knights in the 2 games with patch 1.21, so far. And I only seem to have problems with the spearmen...so far. Any once else having this problem, or am I being an idiot, and have done something wrong? I never had problems in the past, and I ALWAYS upgrade my units via $$ whenever possible in my old games.
thanks

upgraded to new patch in the middle of a game. the default gov. for new cities got unchecked. discovered it when i took over two cities and they were unhappy after ending resist. oops. 1 more bug. J doesn't seem to want to work with my arty.

suggestions: since firaxis is looking here, i hope you'll view alt.games.civ3 there are a lot of great suggestions for the next patch.

i agree with an earlier post about J command. it needs to be more flexible. and having to wake the units before Jing them. give me a break. have u tried that? i use arty in stacks of 50 and when i'm setting them up, i fortify them. it's that or space bar 50 times. now i have to right-click and click activate 50 times. this is a computer not a typewriter. how about more automation? my other big complaint is when i'm at the point in a game where i am now where i'm producing modern armor 20 or 30 times a turn. it is a pain to move all of them to a central point and even more of a pain to airport them all to the continent where my war is. it would be really, really nice to have an option in the city screen for what to with a unit after it is build: fortify, move to point X, fly (airport to point X), whatever. i'd also like to see the ability to create a rally point on the map and tell units to rally there. these types of upgrades would save a lot of the repetive clicking that is killling my wrist. i'd like also to see more options and less editor only stuff. isn't lethal bombard in the editor only? i've never used editor and don't want to. it might be nice to see some more advance units, 2. how about a super arty or arty battery that does 30 damage? or a super tank? i'd wait the turns for them to be built. well anyway, there's lots of things i'd like to see, but don't we all?

all in all, the new patch is working pretty good and civ3 is an awesome game! i've lost sleep many nights due to my civdiction!

I just loaded the game I was currently playing before the patch...

When I am in the upper half however, I can't scroll down past the equator, I need to click on the minimap to go below. The scrolling just stops, as if you were at the end of the map. I can scroll up from the bottom with no problem, but not the opposite. Also, I can't go past the 3/4 line on the right either, same problem. This one goes both ways, I will block at the same place either from the left or the right.

I had this exact problem - playing a game before installing the patch, then finishing the game after patch install. It started doing it out of the blue but, being stubborn (and having a good game:D ), I persisted and it eventually went away. Hopefully, this won't happen when I start a new game w/patch.

I also had a CD read prob after I loaded the patch - ended up having to put my CD (retail) in the burner (I seem to get a better read from that drive) and starting from the autorun proggie. Can't wait for a new noCD ver 1.21... may already be there, better check...

My Win ME only had that error message onee in one game of Civ3 but never in any other strategy game(YET) I have heard and read on other threads for other games i.e Startrek Amada2,Bridge Commander,Empire Earth etc. that Win XP can have LOTS of problems and a lot of people are pixxed. So I imagine all of the windows XX have some kind of problem with every game out. Depends on the individual I guess?

I just realized why people are reporting games without barb huts. Since they added No Barbarians as an option, if you choose Random Barbs, then you have a chance of drawing None on your map. Guess my new setting is Restless.

No, this means that that if you get granaries from the Pyramids, and you create an improvement, wonder, or SW, call it "Building X", that requires a granary in the city, then you will now be able to build "Building X" even if the granary in your city is given by the Pyramids. However, if this is an SW like SDI or Wall Street, etc., that requires more than one of a certain improvement, and that improvement has been given by a wonder effect, then you will not be able to build the SDI etc.

I completely forgot about those small wonders! Your explanation really makes sense, wonder why Firaxis couldn't phrase it that way to begin with. Maybe they too are not native english speakers, hehe... :goodjob:

I just had a sound.dll crash on Win98 - I've never seen it before the new patch. Maybe something has been uncovered with the latest changes?

Maybe a new bug : I'm at war, and an opposing soldier lands in my land. My citizen can't work there (becomes a specialist) and I starve before I get my first move. Maybe this is intentional, or maybe it's always done this?

Appears that the random number system must be set when you start a new game. That's okay. I liked the system where the numbers were locked in.

But.....on the pre-1.21f saved games, you are stuck with the new system. Save and reload, you get a different result. Can't set it so that the random numbers are the same on reload.

Anyone know how to fix that?
