Paternity Leave

I only skimmed the articles but I couldn't find anythign about punishment. Though you're right that the paternitly leave seems to be mandatory, I didn't know that. but then, so is vacation in many countries (including Switzerland).
I guess you can see it as big government, if you think it's big government to require parents (both of them) to take care of their kids...I guess it IS big government, but the good kind :)

I think I was initially introduced to the topic via this NYT article.

The punishment is something along the lines of the family getting thirteen months of paid time, but two of those months are set aside for the father. If the father doesn't take those two months, then the mother can only take eleven months. So family, as a whole unit, is punished if the father chooses not to take time off.

well, but in that case your 'punishment' is not getting benefits....so by the same could be said about pretty much any social security program.

Germany has a similar scheme were parental leave is subsidized by the state paying up to 67% of the net income during 14 months of parental leave provided that each parent takes at least 2 months of leave, which means that in instances were only one parent takes advantage of this only 12 months are paid. There is an exception for single parents in there who get 14 months also.

Of course since this scheme does count the mandatory 8 weeks post birth maternity leave during which its almost absolutely disallowed to have a mother return to work this means that its always incumbent upon the father to make sure months 13 and 14 are paid.

Of course its not mandatory to take the leave, its mostly a scheme attempting to offer an incentive for that.

Which is a punishment.

If Mommy gives you one cookie and your brother two, explaining that your cookie ration was curtailed because you acted up in the market, then you are being punished.

Nah, if Mommy beats the crap outta you because you acted up in the market then that's a punishment.

The child will undoubtedly hold a divergent opinion.
