Patraeus Resigns due to affair

Prior to DADT they were actively hunted out and removed from service - often court-martialed. DADT actually allowed them to serve as long as they kept their sexuality private - and commands were not allowed to pursue investigation of homosexuals (the 'don't ask' part) as long as they didnt overtly disclose their sexuality (the 'don't tell part')...and if they did tell their discharges were administrative only, not a judicial action (courts-martial).

How quaintly 20th century... Sexuality is a private matter- whether you're a private or not. That the US military should be involved in "hunting down" gays seems a total waste of men and time. It looks like there's been a giant leap forward then. In a while US military affairs may even be ready for the 21st century, mentally speaking.

Not to mention, that was ostensibly the official policy. But the witch hunts didn't really stop until the Pentagon took that power away from commanding officers and made it strictly their own decision. Those who were even "outed" by jealous civilians were persecuted on a regular basis, even if they were acknowledged heroes with 18 years of loyal service to their country.
