If you're in the game, of course you shouldn't be reading this thread. :p

For those not in the game, I just need to vent some steam. It seems the powers that be seem to think I need to be handicapped:

There was a hut on the plains tile in the middle of those barbies, just popped by the border expansion. And of course I don't have any units at home to defend with. And no, I'm not actually building the Pyramids, I've just set the town to that hoping that they won't steal my shields (I think I've read somewhere that it works).

What?!?
Barbs aren't supposed to be possible if you pop a hut with culture!

That stinks big time. Yowza.

That was my immediate thought as well, but some quick research reminds me that it's only if there's a town in one of the 8 tiles surrounding it, i.e. if you pop it with first degree cultural borders, that you're safe from barbies. I guess that's a lesson I won't forget in a long while.

Yeah, I've gotten barbs from expansions at turn 10. Sucks at deity.

In fact, I often go and pop the hut with a worker, cause you don't get warriors unless you have one.

Good suggestion, I'll keep that in mind. Of course, had my mind been working properly I would have settled SW of the starting location instead...

in emperor and above difficulty levels the danger of poping huts after 10 turns is possible, i´ve even poped at regent, that was unlucky niklas, still dont forget you are maya - industrial and agricultural, and that start looks great ;)

HB: You are definitely not allowed to read this thread, so why are you here? Reading this thread, and seeing my start, is cheating, no less.

Now things get really interesting. I meet Carthage, who knows about my misfortune after reading this thread. I sure hope he will not take advantage of it.

As you can see, the first barbie took away some of our people, setting back our expansion by 7 turns.

Hey niklas I think you should demad a screenie of his start.

 :agree: And a good part of the surroundings aswell!

What bad manners, looking at someone else's spoiler threads, and even daring to post there! :nono:

Then again, it is possible to forget anything, if it's just late or early enough. It was probably by accident.

On topic, I've never ever had such bad luck :wow:. That'll give you a disadvantage, but if you find some allies you'll probably overcome this. The maya are one of the better civs anyway.

Gee, I should start paying attention. I just sent off a save where my capitol will be rioting when I get it back. :wallbash:

I haven't updated here for a while. Things have been pretty calm, I've finished my granary and I'm well on the way to recover from my early setbacks. Here's a shot of Chichen Itza from the latest turn:

In other news, HB/Carthage has been a very nice neighbor, agreeing on a lengthy peace treaty and some nice tech trades (better for him than me though, since he started with better techs). donsig on the other hand hasn't replied to my peace feelers. I gave him some barbies as thanks, popping a hut right outside his borders. :D

Alright, peter grimes asked for an update, and what better time to update than when I have good news? :D

HB/Carthage has turned out to be a very good research partner indeed, and we are coordinating tech paths. I've recently settled my second town, so now my empire looks like this:

I'm thinking about assembling a small army of horsemen around turn 80 or so and send them to knock on donsig's door. Haven't decided yet though, I like being nice too. But he still hasn't answered my diplo... :undecide:

New empire shot, with horses connected. Someone is going to be unlucky...

No, I know donsig in the north too, not at all far.
