tours for american veterans of the vietmanese war.

Now lets review the stupidness of it.
1. Its for american military veterans i don't think anybody wants to go back to vietnam. Thats like offering a soldier to go back to iraq.
2. It ws advertised on this website where most of its users aren't old enough to been alive for the war let alone fight.
3. Im guessing there is maybe 2 people that visit this site that are vietnam war veterans.
4. It visits battlegrounds. Would you want to go to a place where your friedn got shot up.

I met an American GI who was drafted to fight in Viet Nam who now lives there, in Nha Trang. He was a door gunner on a Huey.

I have just destroyed this thread.

Pasi :goodjob:

The little Vietnamese girl burned by US napalm in the famous photo now lives in the US (or maybe Canada, I can't remember) and is relatively positive about it. It's a complex World!

And it's not as crazy as lead in petrol *cough*. :)

You're right cubsfan, come to think of it I've never heard of any WWI or WWII vets going to Europe either!

Spoiler :
:sarcasm:

I almost missed that Sarcasim Alert. ^^^

I personaly know Vietnam Vets who have returned to Vietnam alone and with buddies. And I've seen a few documentaries in which WWII vets returned to Europe. Even had I not had first and second hand experiance, I would still have a small glimmer of understanding why some vets would seek to return to old battlefields. Closure/healing, maturity, rememberance... to name three that I as a non-vet can imagine. I'm sure that those that were there, can and do have other reasons to return.

But I do agree that your points 2 and 3 approach a level of "stupidness".

The OP is wrong...there is a great number of veterans who long to revisit Vietnam, in its natural beauty, as many veterans remember the country as a beautiful place. Many actually were quoted in the book "Nam" as being over there, in a firefight, and hoping they could bring their wives back and show them how truly beautiful it was.

I have been to Vietnam and met several former GI's touring the country. I spoke with some of them at length; they found it redeeming to see the country in its current peaceful state. And yes, the visit to Khe San and the DMZ was closure for many of these veterans.

Quality sarcasm :goodjob:

I understand what the OP is on about. It'd be like me voluntarily visiting my middle school.

At middle school did you get hooked on drugs, watch your best friend die, and return to a country that hates you?

They only had to return to a country that hated them once. I had to return to a school that hated me everyday. I didn't even have any best friends to watch die! No comment on the drug part, though.

Yeah it's a sad life we're living...

But school, how bad they may be, cannot be compared to war.

How horrible. Being a nerd in grade 8 really compares to getting shot in the shoulder and catching god knows what disease from spending the entire time in the jungle. No really, it does. I can definitely see how being a middle school loner could compare to that.

What do the Vietnamese think about American immigration?

They don't care. Even those old enough to remember the American War with any degree of clarity don't hold anything against the grunts on the ground. Every once in a while you might find some snarky teenager who would go off on an American, but those are very rare.

The fact that Americans who visit Viet Nam are usually relatively wealthy and that tourism is critical to the Vietnamese economy probably has something to do with it.

I just read a book by Nelson DeMille, Up Country, where the main character is a VN vet and does exactly this. There were other vets he met in VN along the way.

In fact, the author himself is a VN vet, and the story was inspired by his trip back to Viet Nam. With some fellow vets.

I'm certain I've had much dumber ideas.

I wouln't call this a dumb idea exactly.

And I know dumb ideas... Your talking to the guy who watched the Jackass Movie and decided to see if you could really papercut yourself on the sides of your mouth.

Long story short, you can... Im actually serious, no sarcasm about it.

Every Vietnam veteran I've ever met has gone back to visit Vietnam. They go specifically to visit the battlefields where their friends "got shot up," as you put it. It's a part of the healing process, both for the individuals and for both our nations.

Ironically, these American vets are also friends with many Vietnamese veterans from the same war, men who, forty years ago, would have tried to kill eachother, now they sit down, have a pint, and laugh it off. That's gentlemanlyness if I ever saw it. Yes I'm aware that's not a word.
