Petition to add Poland

I would like to announce that we have just began to collect signatures for our petition to Firaxis. Our goal is to include Poland as a playable civ in future versions and add-ons of Civilization game.

.....but why? If you want me to sign, I'd like to know why would I want a Civ of Poles. Or any other Civ actually. Even when I clicked the link there was no explanation of why.

While it's pretty clear that he is a Polish nationalist, I'd say he gave some pretty good reasons beyond that for Poland's inclusion.

Poland's history covers a whole heck of a lot of ground, and at many points it was easily the most powerful/important country in eastern Europe. Heck, the historical dominance of Poland in the region was the whole justification for the First Partition, and has underlied all the later partitions the place has gone through since it fell from the height of its power. Poland has at least as much place in the vanilla set of civs as the Inca or Korea or Mali.

However, petitioning Firaxis seems a little... off. There's a finite number of Civs that can be included in any release, let alone that they're going to be paying someone to put together. Not every nation on the planet is going to be represented, plain and simple.

I believe there are already a number of Mods that include a Poland of one sort or another. I honestly think checking them out, or making a new on, is going to be more satisfying than any petition.

OK, I looked through all 6 pages of the thread you've listed and it looks great......for a mod. That's all that thread is - discussions on a mod. Mind you I did enjoy the bit on the Hussar's wings and how it has been developed is really good.

The rest of your above post is a start as you begin to list why you think Poland should be put in but then again a lot of people from different places in the world would argue that they belong to a nation/country/ethnic group who have the "most powerful history" in the world. What are your reasons for saying this?

For example, I can understand why most of the vanilla leaders are in the game because their influence was in most cases world wide, or lengthy over time. I'm not saying I agree with all of Firaxis's choices but then my knowledge of history isnt that great to make a comment against them.

Poland does not register with me as having such a great influence on the World. Now that may be my fault because of my ignorance of history. But if you want me to sign a petition give me reasons how Poland influenced the world. It may get my vote then!

By the way, I'm not saying Poland should not be in either, I just think you'll get a lot more response/support if you can convince people why Poland should make it in to the game.

Edit: plus to make it in to the game it'll need to be for Civ 5, if ever there is one, or the second exp. pack (again if there is one, which is likely to be themed (eg like Warlords) and so may have to fit in with such a theme).

Just read post imm'ly above this. @ Moonbase: pretty good reasons like what? What is meant by the many changes of history and the famous Polish people. In what way can Poland lay claim, as Kodzi says, to having the most powerful history in the world? If he gives examples he may get more support.

I don't think it is ever going to happen, because to include Poland one has to solve the issue of what is Polish, what is Lithuanian and what is Belarussian. For a considerable part the history of these countries coincide... Poland would be the most obvious to include of those three by a long shot, but it's hard to accurately reflect Poland's history without 'stealing' theirs.

I simply felt his reasoning seemed a little... biased. Stood in the face of communism and Hitler? Has bore 'great men'. The argument seems a little flat for me. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Poland in just so long as several other civs had preference.

-Polish husars decided the battle of Vienna in 1683 and the doom of all the Europe.
-Polish knights stopped Crusaders in 1410 in Grunwald (Tannenberg?). Don't know the consequences of this military success. However it was the greatest battle of that time.
- There lives 2mln Poles in the USA, and many milions all around the world
(when I see scores of any movie or game, there is no time not to see a one Polish name)
- as any nation (major or minor) we have famous names (politicians, strategists, humanists, scientists and even saints), which is perfectly natural

However the makers are opinion that we are not important, I suppose ;p. I don't care. I'm happy to live in a tiny nation, but I will protest, when someone callls us barbarians.

Bah! It is quite obvious, isnt it? I guess you and all other non-Polish Civ-gamers want to play as their mother countries just because they hate them much.

Well, the sad truth is that Poland was one of the greatest powers once, but lost against Russia and Germany. Now we are just mediocre (but still fit in the first top 40, what is a good reason to include Poland in 2nd exp pack ). Our only victory is that we survived despite this; but the history is written by victors. Alas, not Polish obviously.
I would also add, that history of most countries is egocentric. So, English think they are most important nation in the world, Americans that they are, Polish that ... and so on. Europeans hardly notice rest of the world, and in particular Western Europeans were barely conscious that anything exists in the east of Oder river till the World War II.

Thats why you dont know much about Poland. I think it is highest time to make the homework - about common history.

Thats basically my impression. Most of the civs in the game seemed to be based off of modern history (french revolution and up) and thats where Poland just doesnt compare. Winning a couple battles in the 1500s doesnt mean you should be included. And I think there are civs that have had much more profound influences on history that should be included (babylon)
