PH05: THe Honorable Emperor Spaceman

:goodjob:. Nice write up Robo.

An Academy would normally be a better long term play but if we can pop Philosophy first, we'll be leading the race to Liberalism and have our third Holy City. We should be looking at getting a GP for a shrine as well.

And I can't wait for the "Free the Barbarians" benefit gig!

As for research I'd go Paper and Education.

Pre-Turn:
Rearrange some tiles to focus on commerce. Science upto 40%
Bismarck has gold :) I trade it for wheat.

Bismarck and Louis XIV both have Literature and are Industrious. I decide I have to do everything to try to get the GLib.

400AD:
Vienne completes Archer, new archer started.

450AD:

Drama comes in, Philosophy beelined.
Trading:
Peter - Drama+10 for Monarchy
Tokugawa - Drama for 280g
Brennus - Drama + Literature for Calendar
Louis XIV - Drama +360 for currency
Bismarck - Drama+110 for HBR

Trying to chop for the GLib when I notice something interesting:

Civ4ScreenShot0093.jpg

Chop goes to Tolosa, I open NY and click on the forest to make it light up. This effectively claims it from Tolosa and voila:)

Civ4ScreenShot0094.jpg

475AD:

Tolosa builds Monastery and starts missionary (for barb city)
Vienne builds archer, start library (need serious culture here)
Thracian is captured and starts a granary.
Workboat whipped in Philly.

OB borders signed with Brennus, I sent an archer to check his cities.

500AD:
I whip 4 pop at NY to get the Lib.
Meanwhile I trade HBR with Louis to get our 360 back...
Workboat completes in Philly, granary next.

520AD:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

We got em!

Chopped every last tree and whipped 4 pop, but hey it's worth it.

Civ4ScreenShot0095.jpg

560AD:
Tolosa builds missionary, archer next.

580AD:

Atlanta completes LH, galley next.

600AD:
Washington builds LH, Theater next.
Philly builds granary, theater next.
Both cities have great potential and need more happiness.
GS born in Washington, looking from science potential he will help most at NY. Lightbulb is Philo, but that is already in research.

620AD:
Tolosa builds archer and starts barracks
Vienne builds library and starts theater (more culture needed)
Academy built in NY.

700AD:
Thracian builds granary, library next. It has culture from missionary spreading judaism.

Comments:

-I marked some spots that are logical for cottages, I think we should build those soon and work them as much as possible. Rather have slow market production so that cottage can grow.
-Peter has ivory for trade and we have ample health. We could trade 2 health resources (or iron) for ivory.

Also, haven't seen an overview map for a while nor the save...isn't there room still north of Washington as well?

however, re: Philo ~ goes a GS not pop the whole tech? I was thinking use the GS for that and focus on some other techs for trade since we don't want to trade away a prereq for Liberalism, right?

Okay, back to the G-man ~ I check out our civics:
700revoltbh9.jpg

I thought Slavery was against the variant rules, but it's not.

Spoiler for Variant Rules :
1. Every civ has a right to defend itself. A just war is one in which you are not the aggressor. If any civ attacks you unprovoked, you are entitled to remain at war with them and to take retaliatory action upon their units and lands for as long as you wish, up to and including their unconditional surrender.

2. You are not allowed to become a Police State, a Vassalage, or a Theocracy. You must adopt Emancipation (and stay there) once you have the option.

3. You are allowed to refuse tribute demands. You are not allowed to issue demands of your own.

4. You are allowed to sign Defense Pacts.

5. If a friendly civ requests your aid in time of war, you are allowed to join them in the war.

6. If you joined an ally in a war, and they have made peace with the enemy, then you must also make peace with that enemy if the enemy requests peace (unless they are demanding compensation for peace -- you do not ever have to submit to tribute demands.)

7. You may not choose to raze a captured city that the game would allow you to keep. (This includes barbarian cities!)

8. Giving away captured cities is only honorable if they are given to an ally who owned them when the war began. (If you "liberate" an ally's city, you MUST offer to give it back!)

09. Your Spies are only allowed to observe or conduct counter-espionage, not to sabotage or carry out other aggressive missions.

10. Pillaging land improvements in neutral territory, to deny them to a rival or enemy, is dastardly. No bandits on the highways, please.

Our axe gets pushed west as Toku founds a new city.

We'll need to war w/him at some point, i think. We might want to swap to a different religion, but for now, i went w/Hinduism to fit in for a bit and make some friends.

In 780 ad, we meet a Roman:
780augustusmetco2.jpg

Yes, yes...peace in our time...let's get on with it.

Hmm...i odn't think so...

How aobut htis trade?
780augtradeyeser6.jpg

He accepts and we're good!

Check out Brennus' army:
780brennusarmyyy8.jpg

THe next player should build a few more spears to pile into our western cities.

I build mostly infra stuff and cottages where appropriate. I also went city to city setting up the city governors w/Emph buttons.

Here's the great nation of America:

That pic is misleading, since it seems to suggest that it was Augustus who'd proposed the trade. And your "hmmm ... I odn't [sic] so .." added to the confusion by furthering the illusion that it was you who said "I don't think so".

Anyway, great game, guys! Seems to going on well for you all, the library strategy is crucial for a peaceful emperor race to the space! :goodjob:

what? you even have to crack the :whipped: in games your NOT in now?

Inherited Turn - 800 AD
After Pholk's report, I'm surprised to find we're still not running Slavery.

Strangely, we're also running Pacifism (costing us 12gpt for our military units), but New York, where we're growing our GS, doesn't have our state religion. However, since we've revolted recently, I can't change civics OR religion right now. :gripe:

Music is pointless, since Louis already has it, so we can't get the free Artist. Sorry, we can't switch to Paper, since we don't yet have Code of Laws or Civil Service. Switch to CoL and crank up the slider to 90%. We need courthouses soonest. We're 7th in GNP.

After this, pretty basic builder's turnset. Highlights:

Turn 2 - 840

Start on Civil Service. Dial the slider back down, CS due in 7.

Why was Philly building a Theater? Switch it to a Courthouse. We can whip this later. Start one in Atlanta, too.

A couple of AIs make some civic/religion switches.

IBT (840->860) - Caesar asks for Open Borders (why not?)

Turn 4 - 880
Ok...we have NOTHING on most of the AIs techwise. So, I decide to make some trades before somebody else does:

I did NOT trade construction away to Brennus - If he gets uppity again, I want to have some military advantage.

Oh, and I don't have a screenie, but Louis has CS, but NOT CoL! I think he's got a sugar-daddy out there somewhere.

Now we can build harbors to help the finances, forges for production, and longbows for defense. And we didn't have to detour from our Liberalism line to get 'em. We could also grab Optics if we want to compete in the circumnavigation race and/or shoot for Astronomy as the free Liberalism tech.

Yes, winning Liberalism may be a stretch, but with a GS or two, we could do it.

Oh, and I could switch civics now, but I'm going to hold off until I can get Bureaucracy in the same switch.

Turn 5 - 900
Settler born in Washington. Send him to the cows NE of Washington, mostly because I can't think of anything better to do with it. Low distance maintenance, and it could be a halfway decent commerce village with a couple of buildings.

Turn 6 - 920
GS born in New York. Sent him to Washington to park for a bit.

Turn 7 - 940
Boston finishes the Heroic Epic, and starts building Longbows to send to the western front.

Chicago is founded on the cows NE of Washington. (hmmm...screenie didn't take). Swipe the fish tile from Washington for fast growth and whipping, and start on a lighthouse.

Turn 8 - 960
Let's see...NASA is a bureau, right?

Start on Paper.

Turn 9 - 980
Great. NOW I remember to make the civics switch. Go to Bureaucracy and Slavery. I considered losing Pacifism for OR, but (a) it was another turn of anarchy, (b) OR isn't any cheaper than Pacifism, and (c) if we can spread Hinduism to NY, the Pacifism will be worthwhile in the Liberalism race.

Turn 10 - 1000
Brennus has parked a stack outside Vienne.

There's a second spear on the way to cover the city, and our first longbow will be done next turn.

Summary and save in next post.

Paper is due in 5 turns.

We have a GS parked in Washington that can lightbulb Machinery right now (which would get us maces if we need to smack Brennus or Toku around). When Paper comes in, I think he'll lightbulb (part of) Education instead, but I haven't checked to be sure. He could also build an Academy in Washington, which might be a better long-term bet. Haven't done the math.

There are also three whips that the next player should consider doing before hitting Enter:

(And pretend that there's a screenshot here of Thracian, where we can whip a Harbor)

Net result would be a balanced (or better) budget at 50%. We're currently at 50%, losing 3gpt with 16 in the bank.

Washington is building a Hindu Monastery both for the science boost and so that it can build a missionary to send to NY - next player please follow through on this plan.

And, last but not least, the save.

As for the GS: Are we in the Liberalism race? If so, I'd burn the GS for most of Education to speed up Liberalism. If we're not in the race I'd build an academy in Washington.

We're swapping civics too much I think. We're not Spiritual so its just useless Anarchy. I agree with the Bureaucracy change but we should hold off until there is 2-3 changes we NEED to make. Rant over.

EDIT: Looks like I'm up, probably tomorrow will be whipping time.

That's precisely why I switched to Slavery with Bureaucracy (still 1 turn of Anarchy) and left Pacifism alone (would have been 2 turns).

Even if we're not in the Liberalism race, getting early Education is nothing but good for our chosen victory.

I didn't really word my rant very well. The double switch you made, Zophos, was the absolute right move :goodjob:. It was the switch out of slavery and into Pacifism and Hereditary Rule *cough* pholk *cough* that should have been delayed. We should lay off civics switches if there is a no-brainer coming up in the next 20-30 turns (ie free market, emancipation for us).
