PH16: Guns Make a Man

good turns rolo ~ we also should figure out what to do with the GS that's going to pop in 6 turns.

also, it might be good to convert to judaism for now, but still spread confucianism and work for a GProphet.

finally, my impression is that since we've already got the settler built (and no other really good spots to settle) we might as well just take the spot, no?

So here is my plan.
1.) Convert to Judaism.
2.) Are we settling the next city 1SE of the settler's location, aka 1 NW of the corn? Because where the settler is has some serious overlap and can't work the corn tile.
3.) The scientist can bulb math, which isn't on the path to gunpowder, but allows us to build our unique building for +2 happy. With that, gems, forges, ivory, wine, HR, and two temples we will have a reasonable large cap very early.
4.) Or should we build an academy? Gem City or Capital? Right now Gem City is out teching our capital, which is running a scientist.
5.) Tech abc for a turn or two then trade for it.
6.) Next tech monarch.
7.) Do we have any city specialization thoughts or are we going hybrid commerce/production?
8.) Whip/build courthouses in every city.

Williem won't trade Maths for CoL (while actually DeGaulle would trade alpha for CoL). So we probably have to research Maths on our own (should be able to do it with 8~10 turns). I don't think the trick of adding beakers to Maths will work -- does the AI takes into account of how many beakers we have researched into a tech? That would imply the AI somehow knew about our research while we don't know theirs. As to trading CoL to Williem, we could get Polytheism plus one more tech (hopefully he would be willing to part with Masonry next turn) -- since Polytheism is requisite for bulbing philo.

Settler, I would actually settle 1S of where the settler is to work on all 3 wines. Alternatively, we can settle 1NE of incense first, then later settle desert east of wine.

The triple gems city is obviously our research powerhouse. Konya seems a decent production city.

Any reason why we are in a hurry to convert to Judaism? If not, I will not do it until we want to run Pacifism. This will give Ankara +5 culture to possibly snatch back the stones.

We should probably spread the axes out a bit so the the northern cities get 2 axes each. The only reason to stack up axes at one place is to attack ... but we can't do that with this variant.

settle so we can get the corn and other wine.

also, i agree on ozzie for trading for maths, but running pascifism? i'm not sure i can agree with that as we should start building our armies pretty soon.

w/that in mind, what kind of army are we looking for? the jannies backed up by trebs and knights? or just cats??

edit: cross-posted w/fox ~ agree on NOT converting yet ~ letting that culture run a bit, maybe until we pop our 3rd borders in teh holy city??

and, fox, how do you reduce science to 100%? :crazyeye:

does the AI takes into account of how many beakers we have researched into a tech?
Yup, the AI trades always for the remaining beakers of a tech. And yes, it is unfair that they know exactly how many beakers we have on a tech and the oposite being false :/

I see I'm on deck, but I wont be playing civ while playing war in middle of forest. Unfortunately my mobile doesn't run civ :p

okay.

Mr. GreyFox, sir? Would you be so kind as to swap with Sir Meiz, being comrades in arms?

World War I
Spoiler :
Hah. No just a short set with lots of events.
Spoiler :

Turn 151
1.) I send a warrior to explore WvO land now that we have OB.
2.) Same thing with Darius.
3.) Per someone's comment, I redistribute axes. Thank you GF. This comes in hand later in the set.

Turn 152
1.) The mish sent to Istanbul has been rerouted to Edirne for the 10% science bonus.
2.) Found Samsun.
Samsun.jpg

3.) Made a trade after 1 turn of Abc research.
DGTrade.jpg

4.) An update on the tech situation. Nothing appealing so I make none.
TechSituation1.jpg

5.) Queue Math for a couple turns to set up WvO trade.

Turn 153
1.) Dirty rotten sun of gun. He :sniper: us.
DOW.jpg

2.) WvO steals a worker and kills our extradited warrior.
3.) Whip Granary in Konya.
4.) Whip Monastery in Insanbul.
5.) Since my anticipated trading partner :backstab: us, set research to 0 for gold.

Turn 154 WvO's troops retreat back into his territory.

turn 155 His small attack force appears. We have four axes.
WvOStack.jpg

Turn 156 His stack attacks. We only lose 1 axe. He has an axe left. Our troops damaged and he is in forest. No counter attack.

Turn 157
1.) We lose another axe.
2.) His is severely damaged and we counter with a kill.
3.) Darius wants us to cancel our deals with DG. I say no.

Turn 158
1.) Stagnated growth in Istanbul until :whipped::mad: gone.
2.) Running 2 scientists. GS in 3 turns.
3.) Set 123 in 3 turns as well.

Turn 159-160 Z

Turn 161
1.) Mathematics is completed.
2.) Set Monarchy.
3.) Scientist bulbs Philosophy.
Scientist.jpg

4.) Taoism founded in Konya.
Taoism.jpg

5.) Send the missionary to Edirne (3 Gems).
6.) WvO will not talk yet.
7.) Current tech situation.
Tech2.jpg

8.) There are some great trades out there but nobody will talk.
9.) Hopefully when we switch to a religion that will change.

i think we get two extra happies w/our UB right? maybe we should do Construction, Calendar and CS before moving onto gunpowder ~ we'd be able to grow fairly large w/our resources and plethora of religions ~ course, building temples means we're not building units . . . .

plus, don't we think we need currency ~ or would we trade monarchy for some backtechs?? personally, they'll get it sooner or later so we might as well.

also, while i'm thinking on it, a rules clarification: i don't want us to be sitting outside the last city of WWI waiting until our forces are ready for us to declare WWII. We must capture/conquer in a reasonable amount of time ~ no milking.

I like Monarchy so the new city can work all three of those wine tiles plus gives us some trade bait to improve relations with whomever. Should give us a small boost to economy. I think we should swap to Judaism at the beginning of the set hopefully improving relations with both DG for Currency trade and Hammy for MC. Darius has Calendar but won't trade with us yet. I assume after he builds MoM he will trade it to us though. Then again, if we switch religions maybe he won't.

Edit: Just read an article about the benefits of bulbing Philo and its unbelievable trade benefits. Someone got like 13 techs just from that one bulb, including brokering. I hope you all can pull that off so I can see the light.

Obligatory gripes at the inherited turns:

PH16-BC0185-suboptimal.jpg

I hate redfaces, and I hate seemingly suboptimal build choices. Redface could be avoided with smarter MM'ing (or if really no choice, turn on avoid growth). Lighthouse while stagnating at happy cap is rather pointless to me.

I corrected them, switching Edirne to temple build, and Istanbul to axe build.

Some turns later, I decided that we are not going to get our stones back through culture (our percentage ownership on that tile actually declined from the last time I checked from the previous save) -- hence we joined the Jewish block officially.

PH16-BC0125-Judaism.jpg

That gives us enough happiness that I think we should grow -- plus we got monarchy towards the end of my set, and the wines add yet more happiness. So most scientists are fired to favour growth. Of course, the Gods would spite me by actually reducing our pop with this annoying event:

PH16-BC0110-SlaveRevolt.jpg

I hate those slaves.

We could even adopt HR to get more happy. Eventually we should, but maybe not right now. We have enough happiness for the short term, so there is no pressure to go HR in a hurry. Maybe until we get CS to switch together with Bureaucracy?

On the war front:

Williem sent a sword/axe/archer combo in:

PH16-BC0125-GGeneeral.jpg

Since we occupied the jungles and hills, he has to bring them to the open, which got slaughtered by our axes -- but my luck were down today, we lost two axes in the process. Nonetheless, it produced us a GG which is still idling at the end of my turnset. We probably should settle him in Istanbul or Konya - -don't worry, I don't think I have build new units after getting the GG, so no wastage occurs.

Meanwhile HC got his goldenage,

PH16-BC0065-HC-GAge.jpg

While Mr Williem suicide his axe against our axe at the northeast horse where a worker is building a pasture. This probably cost him one unit too much, and peace returns to our crammed world:

PH16-BC0020-Peace.jpg

With us getting Masonry for free (actually I switch his initial offering of archery to masonry), we can start to get construction. Here is the tech situation:

PH16-AD0025-Techs.jpg

Nothing worthy of trade, so we should probably get construction on our own, and head for Civil Service. But I am still hoping (against all odds, I must add) that Darius will change his mind and be willing to trade Construction, That's why we should probably hold on to 0% science until we have enough gold to research all of construction at 100%.

We need CS next due to our general lack of food. We need to farm up a few places. So, cottage-loving people (yes pholk, I am looking at you!) please don't go too cottage happy -- leave some tiles for the irrigation spread.

Here is the overview of our empire. If we are in settling mode, we can settle the site N of the NE horse, or hope on a (as-yet-unbuilt) galley and settle the island west of Istanbul.

PH16-AD0025-sit.jpg

As I said, most of our cities are in growing mode ... the worker at the corn is not a mistake since the border will pop at next turn.

Good luck.
