PH17: pholkhero and the Holy Grail

I'm afraid it's my turn actually, unless GreyFox is available to salvage this. mc-red on deck.

hey all, i'm here ~ so, let's figure this out first:

roster:
pholkhero >> just played
fox >> skipped
nocho >> UP NOW from swap
mc red >> on deck
talamane >> posting pics of his own game b/c of the long drag in gameplay ;) :)

ozbenno >> skipped for the near-term

okay, so, let's do what we can ASAP to improve finances. Personally, then, we probably shouldn't settle until we can get the library up and/or some cottages going. But we should have our settler ready for the moment we can do it. I don't think it's as bleak as ozzie makes it out to be, but i've never played immortal before, so . . .

I actually would settle, we can still just afford that I think. We already have the essential techs (pottery and writing) so we might as well set research to 0 right away. HBR would take ages anyway. And maybe we should reconsider what we're teching. If a rush is out, better to tech something useful like math (towards construction). Or aest.

Math is harder to trade than aesthetics so maybe we go with that.

well, if we're playing for a military victory, what's the path from there to it?

if we think we can do a later, medieval or gren/canon war to win this, then that's fine, but let's figure out our plan, now, right?

Aesthetics > trade around and head for CS, and on to a Liberalism sling?

I think I'll just set research to 0%, then we can decide later what to research. But aesthetics doesn't seem like a bad choice. Anyway, I'll desperately try to build some cottages and libraries, while trying to settle near those NW floodplains if that pesky barb is willing to leave the desired settling spot.

I should be able to play this evening. If not, I won't have time till Monday...

Ok, so I played a couple of turns, 21 actually, basically to get things moving again. I left research at 0 as explained before, while building cottages and libraries.

We founded Rostov on the flood plains spot. Some turns of delay as we had to dance a bit with a barb archer that finally suicided himself on one of our archers.

Not much else worth mentioning. We now have 2 libraries, in Moscow and St Petersburg. I suggest we hire some scientists and actually choose a tech we want. Also burn the cash, it would be too bad if somebody would demand it!
Right now I've got some workers in the queue. Feel free to change that, however, Moscow for instance is in a position where it can only build units (or a not very useful monument). As we don't want more units because of the upkeep, the only alternative for now is workers/settlers.

An overview of the empire. Note that KK's borders popped near Rostov.

I don't know if this is still salvageable... :)

I will look at this tomorrow. Any comments will be helpful as I am still thinking of going with Aesthetics.

as I'm one of the immortal newbs, i have no constructive advice. seems good for now. I'd like our vets to comment as well, but aesthetics is okay by me.

roster:
pholkhero
fox
nocho >> just played
mc red >> UP NOW and has it
talamane >> on deck

ozbenno >> skipped for the near-term

Lurker:
It looks fine to me, but given your current situation you should probably consider giving a city the Unitspam duty, to keep you on power pairity with the others, to avoid a war-dec. It will most likely come from Kublai, But you should hope that Judaism spreads to you and Kublai to get Isabella on your side, and then adopt that as soon as possible. If The three of you are allies, it will be easy to dogpile on Huayna and Quin Shi Huang, netting you valuable cities and land to keep your power ration high before turning on your friends.

Just a newb, but does anyone have alphabet yet? It used to be a good trading tech, dunno anymore. It would allow us to produce research instead of things that cost money, IIRC.

Looking at Rostov, it may be best not to chop rush anything with the only two forests it has. They can produce two hammers and one food as they are. If we chop them, they will be down to one hammer each. There is a green hill we can "toggle" (micro) with a mine. It may be best to farm at least one of the floods to seed growth.

@DMOC

That's sorta the plan right now, but a lot depends on what Korias stated, how the religion chips fall. Construction + HBR would get us war elephants and cats; iron working would get us swords.

If the AI still doesn't research alpha like it used to, we may be able to broker it.

i thought cats and phants were the order of the day...if we make there that is. idk if the detour to IW would be worth it.

I will play tomorrow. Are we agreed on Aesthetics? Alpha with this group of AI's may not be a bad call by Talamane. We may be able to trade it for IW.

Aesth is the only thing with trade value, so yeah, go for that. I think Qin has alpha already.

Guys can we decide what to do with open borders.
We have open borders with Qin but maybe we should close as we don't want budhism but rather Judaism. Isabella will soon be asking for us to stop trading and we can't afford the negative hits with her.
KK already is at odds with Capac. It seems we should cozy up to Izzy and KK which means the bearuo and theocracy civics in the long run.
The long run pariah's are Qin and Capac.
So I suggest we open borders with Izzy (otherwise how do we get shared religion) and with KK.
We will have to reject any request to stop trading with izzy from Qin.
I am going to hold off playing till I get some feedback on this.

It all will depend on what religion KK gets. If that will be judaism then ok with your suggestion, but right now Izzy is actually worst enemy of KK.

Also note Qin is buddhist, but is not the owner of the shrine, that must be izzy as well, I guess. So I don't think it's that much more likely budd will get to us because of OB with Qin. Frankly, with Izzy so far away, I don't think we need to fear rejecting any demands of her.

And OB with KK, well, I generally don't like OB with a much more powerful neighbour until I feel save enough and able to repel him in case of a DoW. He could be checking out your land to sell it to the highest bidder, as the game sometimes tells you at the start up...

So basically, I wouldn't change current deals (or no deals) until religiously things change.

Oh, KK at odds with Capac? They seem to be pleased with eachother for now, no?

I must have misread the glance screen you are right about capac and kk.
I'll just keep things the same and reject Izzy if she wants us to stop trading with Qin.
Thanks for feedback good stuff :goodjob:
