Philosophical Utopia

Oh! Oh! How about Hegel? Of course that opens up the can of worms of the correct inteperetation.
Hegel was not an Enlightenment philosopher. Rather in the contrary. Hence, he should not be a leader of Philosophical Utopia. It is - on the other hand - of course possible to create a complete philosophy mod in which different currents are different civs. It would be kind of nice to have the logical empiricists beet the **** out of the platonic idealists...

Oh man, you can't be serious. You're censoring THAT?....

Wow, filefront? I didn't put it there... nice.

Unfortunately, that was the last version I made, pre patch 1.61...
To be honest, I haven't played cIV in a while, so I don't know what needs to be changed to make it compatible with v1.61

If anyone wants to take over, please do so, give the Utopians a new lease on life!

Umh... I liked your Mod enough to start my personal WarLord version of it. I was thinking about adding some more leaders to the Leonardo warlord mod I published today.

The only thing I have to change it is that (since I only work with .xml and .dds files) Philosopher have to be a UU of a Great People, something like the Genius unit in my mod (UU which is an enhaced Great Engeneer).

And I would give its own civ to every leader, to personalize UU (like an Enhaced Great Artist (Philosopher) for Voltaire, an Enhaced Great Merchant (another name) for Adam Smith, ... ) and UB (an Enhanced University for Voltaire, an Enhaced Bank for Adam Smith, ... ).

The UU look can still the same for all of them (Philosopher from Utopia), maybe adding some reskin.

So, _if_ and _when_ you have time to answer me, I have those two question:
- It is ok with you if I use your work to adapt it to Warlord as I described above?
- If so, can you explain in few words how to integrate the philosopher graphic into the game? It is possible to do so only with .xml files, and without programming skills? I mean, where the animations of the philosopher (and of every unit) are stored?

hi!

Yeah, no problem, use as much of my stuff as you want :)
I like your idea of making each leader practically a different civ, I didn't know you could tie UBs and UUs to specific leaders.

Both the Philosopher and the Enlightenment Philosopher are simple reskins of a Redcoat and a Great Artist respectively. They use the same animations as their parent unit (which is a bit of a shame for the Redcoat, but works a lot better for the GA). I got rid of the skull and the rifle by blacking them out in the gamma skin, not through fancy schmancy Studio3dMax trickery!

One thing you might want to do which I was too lazy to do myself is to put in diplomacy text. It never bothered me because I always played *as* them, but when you play against Utopia and start a diplomacy screen, you get a lot of [DIPLO_AI_PEACE_2] type messages instead of actual text.

Good luck, and thanks for keeping Utopia alive! :D

could someone do a version of this mod for 1.61, but with a leader with industrial and philosophical traits, and mysticisim and masonary or the wheel as starting techs. i think this would be a very good combo for the peaceful builder.

This is a brilliant idea. Perhaps it could be expanded into some other idea-themed civilisationsfrom various periods... revolutionary socialists and anarchists, Nietzschean individualists and fascist types, hell... post-modernists? Such potential...

Thanks. I have not so much time either, but I'm working on it (slowly).
I like the idea of the traits, Philosophical + *
Voltaire: *Creative; Leonardo: *Industrious; Smith: *Financial; ....
I'm thinking on making the UU of every new leader out of the Explorer unit:
+ Voltaire: Enlightment Philosopher cost as much as the Explorer and gives its cost in culture points to a city;
+ Leonardo: the Genius cost as much as the Explorer and gives its cost in hammer for a buildings in a city (remember caravans in CivII?);
+ Smith: a financial unit - a "little" great merchant - maybe?
An invisible explorer for some other leader as could be Marco Polo (not too much philosophical maybe) or another traveller that travelled to a foreign country bringing back informations or secrets).
Unique Buildings: it is easier, pick one and add something (Universities, Libraries, Banks, ecc... can be easily enanched in a cretive way).

Since Civ, Leaders, UU and UB are defined in .xml files, I just add the new ones there, making some new buttons and leadreheads, leaving the regular graphic for the buildings and adding some reskinned unit for the UU. Nothing great, but it works good enough.

I'll see if I figure out how to use them then (I wonder how the redcoat "knows" that it has to use the animation for enlightenment).

One thing you might want to do which I was too lazy to do myself is to put in diplomacy text. It never bothered me because I always played *as* them, but when you play against Utopia and start a diplomacy screen, you get a lot of [DIPLO_AI_PEACE_2] type messages instead of actual text.

I know what you are tallink about, it is with the text and traslations the borest part of the job (I'm glad i can use the part of the work you have already made). Anyway, putting more than one new civ I have to do the diplomacy text thing.

Good luck, and thanks for keeping Utopia alive! :D

I need some ;)
Utopia is a cool idea, I'm glad to work on it when I get some time. If you get some time reply, tell me if you have some new ideas about it.

off topic: you're spanish?
