Just wanted to point that out. I popped Philosophy from a hut in my current game. I then selected Lit as my bonus tech, and went on the build the Great Library.

Can you say huge tech lead on Emperor? :D

ehhh... I didnt know we still got bonus tech in Civ3 from Philosophy, we did in Civ2...

whoa didn't know that!

Nice luck! But of course the Great Library doesn't provide a tech lead -- its effects are felt only when you are not in the tech lead ;).

I don't agree with you on that Catt.

Grt. Library allow you to focus on the tech branch that the AI's research last or seldom (Republic > Currency > Engineering seems to work well) and letting the AI research the rest for you in the meantime.

In the end the net result of this strategy DO in fact give you the lead in tech (well often anyway). :D

Or if you're lucky to have met several civs already, the GL allows you to put science to nil and reap huge benefits in order to produce military units like there's no tomorrow :)

I've been having good fortune with being first to philosophy as well. Even if other AI civs have writing they seem to prefer MapMaking for research. Current game I have the Great Library, just starting the Middle Ages, and looks like the AI is going to ignore Literature. It would be cool if mine were the only civ to have libraries in the Middle Ages

Still waiting to get a SGL though...does the free tech provided by Philosophy force a SGL check if the freebie is an undiscovered (by anyone else) tech? Like I'm assuming being first to Philo gives you two shots at a SGL, not just one.

thats nothing- playing on my first random map in ages, I too went the way of philosophy-->literature so i could build the great library (I wouldnt have Ivory undercontrol to build the temple of Zeus for a while, and the GL is theonly other "must have" wonder for me in the ancient era) the differnce is, I aslo got a scienece leader to build it in a single turn :D

OK, now I understand where that free tech came from in my first conquests game. I thought it was a glitch.

I got a SGL with writing! Never had the Great Library so fast.

I don't think you need to have contact with any civs - you get whatever tech any two civs have discovered no matter what.

Mmmh are you sure about that thestonesfan ?
Because if you are... that means I've been playing the game the wrong way for three years now :(
I always made sure I had met at least two other civs to build the GL...

Its a great feelign to have this normally uber-exoensive wonder so soon, dont you think (it also freed up Athens to be able to pump out troops for my mighty two city empire to fight Babylon, and Egypt (I am squashed between them, but the babylonians have fallen, and two egyptisn cities destoryed, one forced over to me for a peace treaty ;)

Sorry, you're right, it appears. I looked in the info center, and according to that, you do need to have contacted the civ. Maybe you didn't need to in Civ2.

Even better than literature is republic! research for philosophy (AI still tends to go for Map-Making after writing), buy Code Of Laws as soon as its available, and if you get philo first you can get republic first and for free! This is an amazingly powerful gambit in the early game, if you can get writing early you're in business for republic.

Indeed you didn't... It was also the case in CIV1. :)
I'm quite glad I wasn't wrong on that one, for it would have ruined a lot of my games... Retroactively :)

True, kind of, but that's not the result of the Great Library - rather it is the result of the strategy of researching certain techs and/or beelining down one tech branch. You can do exactly the same thing and trade techs that are one or two behind your leadership position for the other branch's techs putting you in a very similar position without the GL. The key to both approaches is having the infrastructure to compete with AI research (in all instances other than a lone scientist / 10% science gambit in the ancient age).

Heh heh, I must disagree again Catt :p

Your suggestion of it being the same thing as having the Grt. Library, if you trade the techs only you research is that then you wont be the only one having them and thus you wont really have a lead anymore ;)
