[GS] Phoenicia Discussion Thread

Playing my first Phoenicia game right now. Must say I'm underwhelmed that the 100 % loyalty for coastal cities doesn't apply for conquered cities. I started by taking the Cree capital which was on the coast, and had a hard time keeping up loyalty, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a unique unit that actually allows an early rush.

So I have some YouTube commenters disagreeing with me, I am tempted to test this, but I haven't been in a Civ 6 mood.

I'm certain colonial taxes works in conjunction with moving your capital to another continent, but I'm being told it doesn't. I remember seeing a big jump in gold. Is this working?

and I'm also being told Casa de Contractacion isn't working and is counting your capital on your original continent. Can someone confirm this. I know the folly of arguing with youtubers, but it's been so long since I played Phoenecia I am no longer sure.

You don't even have to move your capital first, per my testing. It just bizarrely doesn't apply immediately.

Elaborate?

What I've found out is that once you build the wonder it locks in your home continent.

I completed Casa while the capital move project was being worked. When the project finished, the bonus didn't apply to my disappointment. Some turns later, however, I noticed it had started working. Not sure what triggered it officially, but I definitely got the bonus for most of the game in the original capital continent cities.

Interesting. I should start a game with them. I was getting a little burned out on Civ6, but the patch notes have reinvigorated me. Though I may wait until after the patch. I only played them once, and I really feel I should give them some more action. They aren't a bad civ. They kind of get overlooked for the flashier civs this expansion.

Okay, completed my test. It's a rough test, but told me what I needed to know.

the TL:DR version is Colonial offices (didn't test taxes since it's much further up the civics tree) and Casa De Contracion do work if you move the capital before putting them in. Actually Colonial offices will work either way, but if you have Colonial offices slotted when your move capital project completes it won't work. You will have to remove the card, then put the card back in (I did it the subsequent turn). Casa de Contracion I could not get to work if I built it before moving my capital, but it worked just fine if I moved capital before this finished (it's okay if it's in progress).

I didn't record my growth numbers for the move capital first test, but rest assured the numbers did go down like they should; here are my production numbers turn before and turn after Casa De Contracion finished (both cities have governors, my capital didn't have a governor at the moment, so I didn't include that one). Obviously both of these cities are on my original continent.
production turn before/turn after completing Casa De Contracion
Sidon: 17.8 / 20.4 seems to be slightly under 15%
Biruta: 25.2 / 28.8 slightly under 15% as well

Now if I allowed Casa De Contracion to finish before completing the move capital project and I have colonial offices already slotted here are some numbers. sorry for poor formatting. All 3 cities had governors (so I could check for both things).

production (turn to grow in parenthesis) turn before move capital completes/turn cap project complete / turn after cap project complete/
Sidon: 18.9 (34) / 18.9 (33) - no change / 18.9 (32) - no change
Biruta: 19.9 (39) / 19.9 (38) - no change / 19.9 (38) - no change
Tyre: 24.1 (9) / 19 (8) - prod loss due to no capital/ 19.9 (7) - small increase from something

My last thing I did was spend money to unlock cards, take colonial offices out and then put back in the next turn.

Sidon 18.9 (31) / 18.9 (28) - production same but growth did go up
Biruta 19.9 (36) / 19.9 (32) - production same but growth did go up
Tyre 19.9 (6) / 19.9 (5) - no real change, but growth was close to pop already

I played a few more turns after that to see if Casa De Contracion bonuses would trigger, but they didn't. Not sure if there's any way to get them to trigger. Maybe move capital again to a 3rd continent. Seems unlikely though.

I'll include a save if anyone wants to mess around with it. This is 1 turn before the capital project completes. For the 2nd half of the test I switched production, for the first part I just let it complete.

Here's another interesting question. Does Hic Sunt Dracones work properly with Phoenicia? I never choose this one, though tempted to now. I certainly would if I was in a heroic age.

Since I'm in a testing mood, the answer is No and maybe yes. Hic Sunt Dracones is NOT working properly, at least according to the description. It clearly says that you get +3 population in cities not on your 1st city's continent. It specifically says 1st city, not capital. If you move your capital to a 2nd continent, cities there will not be at 4 population. It does work on a 3rd continent as you would expect (I currently have cities on 3 continents). I tested it on my 1st continent as well and it works and you start out at 4 population. So basically the game thinks your current capital is your 1st city. The 2nd part of the Hic Sunt Dracones specifies original capital, I'm not going to bother testing this one, it's just +2 loyalty or something minor.

If you are referring to Hic Sunt Dracones it did not work to the exact wording of the golden age policy. If you play loose with the wording, you will see that the game is counting your current capital as your 1st city, even if it is not. At least that's how it worked in my game.

I also discovered that amazingly the Rapid Deployment inspiration triggers correctly. Meaning if you move your capital to a 2nd continent, you only need to build an airstrip in your 1st continent.

Oh right. I just assumed its a wording problem as usually you can't change your first city/home continent

Civs
  • Phoenicia: Fix non-capital continent bonuses moving properly for Phoenicia (additional checks).

YASSSS

Does this mean policy cards and such will work based on the current rather than original capital now? Can anyone confirm?

They do these fixes after I already ran my tests. :) I'm not going to play them again any time soon. But the policy cards did work before, but sometimes you would have to switch them out then put them back in. Casa only worked before if you switched your capital before building it (on your original continent). Presumably it now works even after you switch your capital after building Casa.

The domination game is the only victory achievement I have yet to get. So here I go random leader, random map, only way you win is domination how can that go wrong?? the computer gives you phoenicia on a islands map that's how :(. My q is, is there an easy way to see where Phoenica's capital is?? My dumb butt left her as the last civ I have to take so now she's in the modern age with a million settlements pls help, I can easily nuke the **** out of her capital if I can find it :x

edit: I'm nuke happy Ghandi yes that's a HORRIBLE setup for a domination game... but it's just prince dificulty so I made it happen... and I've pretty much completed the tech tree so :)

See on the far left of the city where the Circled Star is? That denotes the capital.
