Photobucket Image Hosting

I haven't checked yet, but if they did delete mine, it's a good thing there wasn't much in it.

Maybe it was sent to everyone who ever had an account with them who isn't currently a paid member.

I don't recall receiving one, but maybe it went into my spam folder unbeknownst to me.

It's looking like they're finally realizing that $399.99/year is just a wee smidgen outrageous. I just got this email:

Photobucket said:
Hello ,

We would like to offer a tailored plan for users just like you - our Premium plan for $99.99 / year.

The Premium plan will provide 3rd party hosting for non-commercial use on your forums, blogs, and personal websites*. Additionally, you will be able to store up to 300,000 photos.

We are working on some exciting changes for 2018. This is our exclusive introductory price and this offer will expire in 7 days.

Premium Plan

Thank you very much for your continued support.

-Sebastian

Of course he doesn't say what the regular price will be. I need to ask some questions, such as would this kick in after my current plan expires in June, since I still object to paying twice in the same time period.

Or maybe I'll just continue deleting everything I can do without, reactivate my Fotki subscription, and move the rest there.

Has anyone else received new offers like this or others?

$99 a year is more reasonable, I guess, but it's too late. The damage has been done.

I haven't received any offers through email. They keep logging me out though and give me a different "offer" that I need to skip every time I log back in though.

Interesting, that's the same as what I got a few weeks ago, except for being $99 vs $119. Maybe it's lower because it's in CAD instead of USD? I didn't realize the Canadian dollar was stronger than the American dollar again, but I don't think I've checked since Obama was president. Or maybe they didn't get many bites at $119 so they're slowly lowering the prices to see what works.

CAD is ~0.81 USD at this moment. It might be that they are offering different rates for different users as well.

I think they are desperate and trying to get what they can after their ridiculous Charges.
You know... " your files will be here forever" ... etc... Then they start changing and charging everyone against what they said. Guess Forever is not very long :)

Time for a bump. Flickr has announced that they're toning down their 1 TB of free storage offering. According to the details,

"Free members with more than 1,000 photos or videos uploaded to Flickr have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Pro or download content over the limit. After January 8, 2019, members over the limit will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. After February 5, 2019, free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos or videos will have content actively deleted -- starting from oldest to newest date uploaded -- to meet the new limit."

To be fair, they are (1) only charging $50/year for unlimited, instead of $400 as Photobucket did initially, and there was no sustainability to the 1 TB business model (they also are now owned by a relatively small company who bought them from Yahoo earlier this year, so it could be worse if they hadn't been bought - quite a few services bought by Yahoo have folded over the years). But I figured some of y'all might want to know about the changes.

I will be archiving the Stories and Tales that are using Flickr, which amounts to 10-15 threads, since those are likely old images and some may be on accounts that are now over the 1000 limit. But there are about 100 threads in C&C that mention or link to Flickr, many of them unit or PCX threads, so you may want to be aware of this if you use Flickr to store images here.

Edit: If you have a bunch of pictures you need to download, a chap wrote a download tool that is available here. It's sorta tech-y and I haven't tried it myself since I don't have a Flickr, but there's an option if you have a gazillion photos.

tl;dr: GET OFF PHOTOBUCKET NOW.

Having snuck through multiple ToS changes without notification between the OP and now, Photobucket is killing off free accounts. Despite the big scary ransom screen when you log in, navigating back to your account page still works... for now. You can download the original files unadulterated (and they'll automatically pack up in a handy .zip file), so if you've lost your local sources, now's the time to update your backups.

Hotlinks are still up with the ugly watermark so you still have a visual guide for rehosting, but there's no timeframe given for when they plan to shut down accounts for good, so don't dally.

I've had a paid account for over a decade, and they've been trying to screw me over every year - attempting to claim that I'm over my bandwidth and they want $$$, when the fact is that it's just an attempt to charge me twice for the same yearly subscription.

Last I heard, Fotki is happy to host "Photobucket refugees."

Cheers, hadn't heard about that site. Thought most had migrated to Imgur instead. That is what I did. They've degraded a bit too, but it's still fine to host images there and post them on sites with a proper .jpg link that actually shows up. Must be 6-7 years ago or something since Photobucket turned to crap? It's possible I still have an account there, but perhaps they deleted it years ago too. I certainly haven't paid them a single cent, because they don't deserve any money for screwing us over continuously like this.
