(also to a lesser extent Maya- they only need it for Pyramid spam) and further enhance the shrine via religion

Feed the World: Shrines and Temples provide +1:c5food: each in city.
Asceticism: Shrines provide +1 Local City :c5happy: in Cities with 3 followers.

Their UB temple replacement has a huge advantage over the other civs - 0 gpt turn maintenance cost ... Considering the early game gold starvation in BNW getting temples out early would be economic suicide with any other civ ... (-8 gpt from just 4 temples)

Mud pyramid mosque
no gold maintenece
+2 :c5culture:
+2:c5faith:

Burial Tomb
no gold maintenece
+2 :c5happy:
+2:c5faith:

But for Egypt and Songhai it opens up religion heavy playstyle (2 early piety policies mixed in with liberty/tradition and some cultural CS ally to make up for the detour ) .. Also religion has perks that can further improve temples ..

Choral Music: Temples provide +2:c5culture: in Cities with 5 followers.
Religious Center: Temples provide +2 Local City :c5happy: in cities with 5 followers.

Would like to hear a fleshed out strategy / see a video LP over this by some of the more experienced civ V Veterans ..

Some time ago, i saw a thread where a guy with a Napoleon avatar explained how he went wide with Egypt, using Burial Tombs and Religious Center to go Wide.

I'm currently trying to find it, but don't quite remember the thread's name.

EDIT: I agree with the suggestion of Songhai's synergy with Piety and the possibility of going Wide and using Religion to offset the hapiness penalties.

If Mud Pyramid Mosques :c5culture: output remain the same, it will be a great thing for Songhai, considering the culture buildings will now have reduced :c5culture: yields.

EDIT 2: Search isn't exactly helping my point here, but check this http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=495972

I'm currently playing Egypt, and I went Piety with them. I basically rushed to Religious Sites so that I could exert early tourism. It works great, but my map was kind of borked. I must've flipped on Legendary Start or something because my area was full of resources. I have already Influenced Venice, though, and Gajah Madah and Casimir are next. The efficiency of your strat is probably the next thing I will try with them.

Anyway, Egypt gets a desert start bias I believe, so you'll probably be tempted to take Desert Folklore. It gets ridiculous pretty fast, but that gold and culture from holy sites are nice.

I think the Songhai are going to be a lot more valuable in the early game because gold is so hard to come by. They can hunt barb camps and make up for the lack of gold.

Egypt does not get a desert bias. Unless this has been changed for BNW.

The only two desert biases in the game are Morocco and Arabia.
