Player stats, sales, and reception speculation thread

It's not really funny, just cannons and towers placed in different way, so it doesn't look like a default battleship, but still looks like a valid ship.
Ah okay the way you described it I thought it was copied from a previous Civ game 😂

I just checked concurrent players, and this is the first time (that I can recall) that the number has been less than 5k.

4943 players currently.
It dipped below 5,000 on July 3rd, too. I think it was consistently getting below 5,000 in the quiet hours for the second half of June as well, but I can't currently verify that through Steam. Player count improved from July 4th to July 6th (higher highs and higher lows each day over the American long weekend). Since July 7th the nadir has consistently been below 5,000, with each day marking lower highs and lower lows than the day before. That may change moving into the weekend, but the trend suggests that even if it improves day-over-day, numbers this weekend are likely to be lower than numbers last weekend. We'll see.

With the Steam summer sale coming to an end today, I see little evidence of a material player pick-up arising from their 15% off sale or latest patch. Player counts over the past week have been below May numbers. They are better than the worst periods in June, but per the above the trend is resuming downward, so I suspect the second half of July will see fewer average players than the second half of June.

It's now summertime / vacation time / school holidays in the northern hemisphere, so player counts now versus May or even June are apples-to-oranges. I doubt the rest of July and August will tell us much. I suspect we will see numbers continue to drift downwards until the fall. The next big test will be the release of the next expansion and what happens to player count after that.

At this point they might as well release one half of RtR free for the base game owners, and the other half as free for CotW owners. And the first big expansion should be free for Founders buyers. I'm not saying anyone is entitled for these, but... what hope is there to retain the player base? I like the game with mods, I play it regularly, all the while the majority seems to be leaving the game, if not stopped playing weeks/months ago. And right now it seems it's for good.

I suggested free stuff, too, but not that free stuff. New free stuff!

Anyway, isn't it likely that a lot of players bought the game in February, played for a few months, and then moved on to something else? That doesn't mean that they're gone for good. A lot of them will probably come back when there's new content. That's what I'm planning to do.

I don't think we'll get any changes in RtR, it's already an obligation. But new free content can come and will come. We could expect more things like natural wonders or resources, but since a lot of players don't recognize it as a content they could potentially pay for, I totally expect some free civ coming after RtR.

I honestly dont think that would help anything. If you are served a rotten burger, you wouldn't want more for the same price? Price has never really been a factor (at least for me) for a good game. I heard the same statement a billion times throughout the years; "civ games are cheap when measured in played time/price". The price isn't the problem, the product is the problem. If the game was 90% discounted right now, I still wouldn't be buying it.

Maybe, but other people will. Price is one of the top concerns in the negative reviews.

It's important to remember that everyone have their own agenda, like and dislike different things. For some, Civ7 is already fantastic, for some it's irredeemable, for many it's somewhere in between.

15% reduction in price wasn't enough to get many more people to buy it. I doubt much more discount will move the needle until the game starts getting reviewed better. At the moment, new players are liking it less than players did on launch.

I think Civ VII isnt just fantastic or iredeemable at this point so much as a meme. I reckon 75% of the target audience are happy to wait 5 years for 66% off the platinum edition, which is a problem for the games lifespan to get that far, but a problem of Firaxis' making.

Do you think Civ6 Platinum being free for a week will have any effect on Civ7 sales and numbers of people playing?

It seems Civ 7 is not getting much media attention, but finally, someone wrote something about it.

Nothing new there, but here is my pick:

Firaxis should have focused on the features that made Civ 6 successful first, and then found ways to address these side effects to create an overall improved experience, not the other way around.
Makes sense. In Civ 6, you could automatically lay roads using caravans, but there was no similar concept to lay railroads.

Or automated workers. The AI has it, so why can't the player?

If it causes a spike in sales od Civ7, this will probably be followed by a corresponding spike in returns and bad reviews
Most negative reviews come from old fans who don't like what the game differs from previous ones (based on review analysis at least). If we see any significant amount of new blood, we could expect much better reviews as objective Civ7 problems like UI ones are mostly dealt with.

P.S. By objective I mean problems noticeable by people without civ background. I understand, how, for example, distant lands hinder replayability, but it won't hinder relatively new people the way it bothers us.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of Civ 7 players would be new to the franchise. I suspect a large number will be franchise fans who might have played at least 2 of the previous editions.

At the moment we have the first civ sales and it's pretty small, so yeah, I don't think there are many new players - the game is quite expensive. I'm not sure about consoles, but I guess significant part of players there are old time Civ players as well, just moving to new platform.

The similarity to Fallout76 continues; Fallout 4 was a massive sales increase the way Civ6 was

Then the core identity gets dumpstered and a debacle follows

According to Gamalytic, 89% of Civ VII players have Civ VI.

It would be interesting if we knew the demographic age groups and compare that to Civ VI.

(Edit: VI ->VII)
