We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

I know a few of us here have PSN accounts and will probably have made purchases... Should we be worried?

Just heard about this. I don't play consoles online though. Computer is for online.

Well if you want to be REALLY safe, go ahead. But I wouldn't.

You can go online with console just like with a pc. Hardware and software you have for it and games too
some mmmos are even connected together between pc and consoles, speaking of PS3 and Xbox360

I may have a bit of panic since you could loose some money but they shut down to reestablish security so just wait and drink coffee for those having PSN account

Why does there have to be one of these posts in EVERY thread on this subforum?

I am mildly concerned about the whole thing. Can't really do much until everything clears up.

While Sony's protection has clearly been breached, it's unfair to lay all the blame at their door. That's like blaming the bank for being robbed, or blaming the home owner for letting the burglar in.

I think Skwink meant he did all his online gaming and stuff on his PC, not that you shouldn't do it on the console. Way to jump to a conclusion you bloody peasants :p

DON'T PANIC

However,DO:
Change your e-mail for everything else you have signed up for.
Change all your passwords associated with that e-mail account.
And check your credit card account religiously (if you used one with your PSN account).

EDIT: Latest Nerfnow is relevant:

Why? Sony is responsible for your lost money through their services. Let the money be stolen then sue for more.

Good luck. Similar situation (except much smaller scale) happened to a XBox user a few years back. He sued, courts ruled in Microsofts favor. Precedent is set and is likely to be followed; so suing Sony is just a waste of money. You pretty much have to prove that there was negligence on Sony's part (AKA foreknowledge of the security hole) to get any type of money from them.

Trust PrinceScamp to spout some master race crap. :p Let us have our fun, dammit!

Hey I didn't even post anything morethan a wee bit of fun. I even want(ed) a PS3. And a TV. And a million dollars whiel we're at it.

Yeah, well... Pffh. I consider "Master Race" to be able to play the maximum amount of games possible across all systems. Like me! :D

Anyway back on topic, there are rumours that PSN will return at the weekend... Nothing more than rumours however.

You gotta love that Sony took like a week to mention this. PSN users weren't even finding out through Sony, but from other customers via Twitter, according to an interview on BBC this morning. It's bad enough that their service got hacked, but it's ridiculous that they waited so long to announce it so people could take steps.

Yeah. My dad was confused because he couldn't get onto his netflix account, and thought it was a connection issue. He called Sony and they gave him the runaround for an hour without actually figuring anything out. Then he went on yahoo answers and learned the truth.

I think most of you already read this, but if not:

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/TECH/gaming.gadgets/04/26/playstation.network.hack/index.html

"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," said Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment, which manage the two services, in a joint statement.

Some subscribers reacted angrily to the news.

"You waited a WEEK to tell us our (personal) information was compromised?" one PlayStation user wrote on a Sony blog. "That should have been said last Thursday" -- the day when Sony first acknowledged the issue.

I wonder, if hackers can do this to sony, how safe are our data on steam?

Not important enough for CFC for the main page. Probably 95% of the users here don't have a Playstation, nearly no sidewide impact for us.
