Pluto's newly found moons named Nix, Hydra

I read that, but who, honestly, is gonna remember that in ten years? The thing will be known as "Nix", not as "Nyx-spelt-with-an-i", and "Nix" happens to be a fitting name for a little icy world.

Incidentally, "Nyx" and "Nix" are pronounced differently in my language.

In English there is no hard and fast rule. Sticks Styx dykes cliques cliches, so many words that only experience teaches you how to pronounce any of them, it's mix and match mess of a language, good for poetry though.

I think Pluto should be deplanetized. Haven't they found several KBOs bigger than Pluto?
Only one is bigger, but many are of comparible size

Consider its elliptical orbit, which is extreme compared to the other planets.
Elliptical orbits isn't that good of a metric because there are many large exoplanets with highly elliptical orbits. I'd go by size-based metrics and the ability to gravitationally control regions.

I agree it's very much a Kupier object rather than a true planet, but it seems regardless of it's absolute designation it's likely to remain a planet for some considerable time to come, I'm of the view it's an exception I can live with, and still have arbitrary rules about what a planet is.
I can live with it too, but I'd prefer to not have to. ;)

I'll take that bet on the opposite side of course:)
I bet you that within the next 10 years a KBO besides Pluto will be discovered to have at least 2 moons. The loser of said bet will modify thier avatar, sig, title, and location to one that admits the intellectual supiority of the winner. They must display it for no less than 32 days.

Do you accept?

I couldn't except your intelectual superiority without actually meeting you, and knowing you for a few years, that sort of thing isn't easy to judge, yeah I accept but only if I don't have to mean it ;)

In what way? Pluto is imprinted on the publics' consciousness so much that I personally doubt even if they should find hundreds of such objects with ten moons, it wont displace the notion of Pluto being a planet, scientists will probably stick with pluto's planetary status because of inertia as well, it's easier to stick with something than to change it and get it out into the aether. That said it is an interesting link and we shall certainly see. :)

My momma always told me: never bet unless you have an unfair advantage.

Apparently TLC's momma told him that, too.

You just lost your bet with Perf.

I never agreed to it, as you'll note I never said yes, and for a start the only bet I wanted was the one about pluto being declassified as a planet. Just because perfection says we have a bet it doesnt make it so untill I say yes.

Oh and another point is I never read the bet, so I thought he was referring to the original bet.

hehe anyway what part of I only accept if I don't have to mean it means i accept :)

Plus this was disovered in the past and not in the next ten years so not only was Perfections bet not fulfilled but no doubt he was being intelectually fraudulent about making it in the first place. You can't bet on something that already happened, it's not a matter of chance then, play by the rules you guys :)

The "accept" part. :p

One interesting thing about the Pluto controversy is that people advance the "popular perception" argument with such force. I mean, more than 150 years on, the public still hasn't catched on to what "dinosaur" means, yet nothing particularly bad has happened.

Probably right but I think it's a powerful motivating factor in what scientists decide, the public ignorance factor.

Of course if it is declassified it'll mean pedants on internet forums everywhere will have the chance to point out that Pluto isnt' a planet, and would mean an addition to the annals of the classics such as tomatoes aren't vegetables and Cromagnon man is homo sapiens you bonehead!
