Simon Darkshade should get this one w/ no problem:

***

A dragon and knight live on an island. This island has seven poisoned wells, numbered 1 to 7. If you drink from a well, you can only save yourself by drinking from a higher numbered well. Well 7 is located at the top of a high mountain, so only the dragon can reach it.

One day they decide that the island isn't big enough for the two of them, and they have a duel. Each of them brings a glass of water to the duel, they exchange glasses, and drink. After the duel, the knight lives and the dragon dies.

Why did the knight live? Why did the dragon die?

People, there's a reason we have a riddle thread in the H&J forum!

As to this riddle, what happens if you drink from well number 7?

One thing I'm thinking about:

If you drink say 1 first you need a higher well to cure it, lets say 3. But then you'd be poisined by 3, right? Or would it just cancel out?

Higher well poison cancels both poisons.

Just 1 = dead.

1 + 2 = alive.

Well if the Dragon lives higher up he's likely to bring a higher level water than the knight. So if the knight would drink from the water he brings before giving them to the dragon the dragon's water will heal him from that.

Is that why KD changed his name?

Seriously, I think Perfection's answer makes a lot of sense.

I think the knight drank water from well six, because the dragon would shurely bring water from seven (or does any higher well do the job? In that case the well he drank from doesn't matter much.).

I'm with Perfection that he gave the knight normal water.

Why did the dragon not fly up to well 7 and take a post-duel drink?

Assuming there is no source of pure water on the island.

Because he's a flyless dragon! :D

How could you assume the dragon would get it from well 7? The knight drinking from well 6 would be possible suicide.

I guess the knight gave him water from whatever body of water surrounds the island. Or maybe he planned the duel in advance, and collected rainwater.

It's an island! He could easily desalianate sea water.

Could have been an island in a fresh water lake ;)

If the knight drank from well 1, then he is safe as long as the dragon didn't bring water from well 1. Let's assume that he guarded well 1 and the foolish dragon didn't want to risk a frontal assault.

I'll buy the sea-water explanation, but we still have to make a pretty big assumption...

That the dragon doesn't notice it's sea-water, and flies up to take a drink from well 7, thus dooming him.

Well distillation is pretty is on a small scale, and since it's a night he's got the iron age technology needed to do so.

At the start of the riddle, they've been living on the island (unharmoniously) for some time, so they have a source of fresh drinking water.

The knigth did drink a glass of well1 water before going to the duel and brougth a glass of normal water with him.

Quite simple...
