For those of you still having problems...
Try using low resolution textures... Tick the box in the options menu.Well, you give up the graphical intensity, yet come on, this is Civ... Who needs graphics, when there is fabulous gameplay...
This highly enhanced my game speed, I also do not use multiple units... Graphics settings on low I guess... (it might be medium thou, I am not sure)

My Specs:
P4 2.6
512 RAM (dont ask for the details)
Geforce 4 440 MMX

Hope this helps.

The post was a huge benefit for me. I'd been playing a Large game (4 civs/noble) that was in the late stages and had become almost unplayably sluggish. I patched, and was able to complete that game quite smoothly.

I've since played another complete game that was nearly hitch-free from start to finish. Everything is improved: load times, scrolling, pausing (as in, there is nearly none now).

I do have all the settings reduced for lowest graphics load. I'm waiting for a RAM upgrade before I turn things up and try Huge maps and/or more civs.

So from this reporter: :goodjob:

Worked fine before, but after the patch the game is unplayable. About the only thing that got fixed were the intro movies, everything else stutters like mad, or causes CTDs.

I'm in the other category - My patch won't even install because I got my game from direct2drive

This poll needs another option: yes, the patch installed, but it solved none of my issues.

So very tiring, this is...

Later!
