I love greece and Siam, going to war and having 8-9 city states for your opponents to worry about is not only hilarious, it's surprisingly effective.

Difficulty level definitely plays a big part in what's viable and what's not. Persia gets worse and worse the higher you go up in difficulty because it's that much harder to keep people happy.

I play on Immortal Pangaea with Random Civs, and my vote goes for China if it's the best 'all-rounder'. Mongolia is the best by a mile when it comes to warmongering.

In my last game as Persia (immortal), I only had two golden ages triggered by happiness, but due to running a few wonders and emphasizing great people and the proper SPs, I was probably in a golden age for roughly 3/4 of the game after I triggered my first one. Keeping yourself in a continual golden age is really easy and a great ROI if you dedicate yourself to it.

Besides, if you have Chichen Itza as Persia, you can sell all your luxuries (or just enough to keep you growing) and not run out of golden age until the deals expire. Which works even better on high difficulties because of the insane amount of cash the AIs get.

i tried both. I think Greece's ability is better but Siam has better/more useful units.

right that's true so this poll is biased because most people who vote play hard

Spain is by far the best civ in multiplayer. They get way too high a bonus for finding natural wonders. If you find a couple in the first couple dozen turns you can buy settlers and be much too far ahead.

Babylon are almost always going to be next best. And Denmark almost always next after that - their unique units are so strong in MP.

I just played a king level, Pangaea map with standard everything else. I used the science focused path to gain a lot of great scientists and switch over to domination once I had enough GS to jump to muskets and cannons by turn 150. The game only last until turn 235. Nebuchadnezzar Rocks!!!
I’m going to move up the difficulty level next with him

if you take persia and build chichen itza, the golden ages are x 2.25 longer so you can easily have golden ages that last over 20 turns.

Well I narrowed it down to a lot of thought, and I finally picked Rome.

Rome because of their very good UU's, and an effective UA. Their classical era power is immense, and they get an enormous early game boost from producing buildings 25% faster.

A close second is the very popular hit, Persia. These two I narrowed it down to for my final picks. But I chose Rome, because when you look at it, what's better: A common 20% production boost, or an everlasting 25% production boost. I wouldn't get into a big stance on Rome being always better, both civs are both extremely good in most situations.

My most notable honorable mention, India. In Civ4 India was my favorite civ. For about a whole year on Civ4 all I played as was as Asoka. And I loved it. I still love India on this game, despite their useless UU and a rather weak UB. Their UA makes up for that though, which is probably my favorite UA in the game. All that's required is Forbidden Palace, and later on, and Order policy, and you've got probably the most effective ICS in the game on your hands. Late game explosion, that is India.

Other honorable mentions for me include the lord of wealth, Askia of Songhai.
The perfect balance, China.
And the guaranteed cultural win, France.

It depends on the setting; for an online FFA Pangaea I'd pick China; GG's and Chu's (and my brilliant military strategies) make quick work of enemy armies, and Paper Makers keep the doe flowing.
For single-player Deity, I'd pick Persia. The Immortal's healing ability can be preserved, making a potentially immortal army (ha!), but more importantly, sooo much Golden Age! All that money makes a diplomatic victory easy.

On a historical note:
I was reading about the Immortals the other day as my game was loading (lol), they were supposedly known as such because of the rapidity of soldier replenishment (that healing bonus makes sense now!). This was because, as elite units, they had ample benefits and generally enjoyed far better treatment than the average spearman, constantly being followed by a caravan of goods and concubines. The reputation of such things made for easy recruitment and from existing ranks and training camps. It was said that each fallen Immortal was able to be replaced immediately, and not simply by a random peasant, as this was an elite troop.
However, it is likely that the name given to them today, Immortals, is actually a mistranslation. It is supposed that they were actually referred to as Companions, which makes sense as they served not only as a fighting force but royal guard.

After June/july patch,I think we'll need to create another poll like this.

it's not very objective because some civs are better at high difficulties, some are better on certain maps, some are too dependant on random things, but whatever it gives an idea of who's good.

i voted iriquois - i think they gain versatility from next patch by not having iron reliance, you have a civ you can choose when you don't want to worry about iron.

Those who chose America, England or the Ottomans must be joking, surely?

I chose inca. Their UU is pretty rubbish but their UI means super-fast growth, and their start bias also means great production. You have the fantastic production of hills which the fantastic food from a terrace farm. Their UA is probably the best in the game too because it benefits their economy, scouting and military. Ignoring hills terrain cost speed up early scouting no end, allows you to build warriors instead of scouts, increasing military stength. It is also a great bonus on the offense, as you can catch up with retreating units and retreat yourself! Do siege units ingore terrain costs when they are firing too? So, you get great food, great production, and a great military with the Incas. Yet still, road maintenance is far less than halved, doing wonders for your economy too, usually easily the same effectiveness of 3 maccu picchus. I love them. In fact, I'm going to play with them again now...

@OP

You need to be more specific. There's a Civ that fits each victory type best. Japan is the best for domination, although that's debatable. Alexander is the best for the econo...I mean, diplomatic victory, siam does best for cultural, maybe monty, etc.

I voted for Siam, the 50% culture and food bonus really does help a lot.
