Windows ME. The "what were they thinking?" member of the Windows family. It should have been a Windows 98 downloadable update, not a complete new OS. I pity anyone who actually spent money on this thing.,

I've used ME on several computers and each one of them ended up having to be wiped within weeks. You can't have more than 3 programs running in the background before it starts randomly freezing or rebooting. Insane DLL errors that you don't even understand half the time were so frequent it was like a bad joke.

I liked 2000 and win98 because they were so stable. XP is good too but I've found it tries to force my hand too much. Autoplay be damned.

Huh? That makes no sense at all. Windows 95 was extraordinary when it first was released.

I think some of you are using a bad comparison method here. Many of you are just comparing all OSes to today's standard, and that isn't fair. You need to be a bit more objective and compare based on the time that it was released in, the features that it included, the reliability/stability of the day (not the reliability of new hardware of today with an 8 year old OS), and so on.

3.11 itself was also a great improvement over the old Windows or DOS shells.

Anyhow, I'm going to quote from the original thread that I posted in:

Windows ME was the worst release ever by Microsoft.

I own/have used almost every version of Windows (starting with 3.1) and MS DOS (starting with version 4).

Of the Microsoft lineup, here is my ranking of all their OSes. Starting with best and ending with worst.

Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows NT
Windows 98 SE
Windows 98
Windows 3.11 for Workgroups
Windows 3.1
Windows 95
MS Dos 4.0 and up
Windows ME

Why did I give these rankings? My judgement is based on experience ranging from: a)Ease of Use; b)How stable it is (or how often you get the Blue Screen of Death; c) Compatibility; d)versatility; and e)innovation

Windows ME introduced nothing new, and only proved to be the most unstable OS they released.

Ummm... Ditto what he said. I would only quibble that NT4 and Win98SE ought to be tied since the first was only appropriate for business use and the second was only appropriate for home use. ME is easily the worst because the others were steady improvements over time, but ME was a huge step backward from 98SE - no wonder M$ threw out the codebase when they went to develop XP.

Down with Microsoft! I hate all of their bull crap OSs that crash constantly and completely suck compered to Mac. Unfortunatly, Windows controls, like, ALL THE SOFTWARE EVER, leaving the far superior Mac OSs to rot.

Two well thought out and intelligent posts.

As if Mac's don't crash. My step-mother is a graphic artist, she uses Macs exclusively, so I have seen her go through software and hardware problems with them.

I use Windows 2000 and absolutely love it. Never crashes on me. No surprise that Windows ME is leading the poll.

Besides, why go Mac when you can do Linux for free?

ME is the sucker in this poll, just where is 3.0? The first Windoze version that was actually used but basically was a graphics shell running on top of DOS. 3.0 > 3.1 was a giant leap in terms of stability and functionality.

I remember 98se as the worst experience I have had. I used to use my mom's 98se computer. In 2002 I got a new XP compuer and got kicked off the 98se. Now I try to get back on and it runs really slow and it takes a long time to close a window in Opera. It was running fine but now it goes slowly and stops working sometimes...

I almost forgot about ME!! ME was MS bloat+slowness without the the power of XP ...It was beyond a joke....I wonder if anyone still uses it...
