Popup Ads?

my.php
[/IMG]

pop up ads had stopped showing up for me when at cfc after i changed settings in ie7(vista home premium). this morning 1've had 4 different ones show up in less than 10 min

Heres the one I got about a week or so ago, only once. And it wouldn't even let me do the survey heh. After filling in the first question, the button for [ next ] or [ submit ] wouldn't work in Opera.

I run windows IE, and have no pop-up blocker or anything like that, and I don't ever get any. Not only here, but elsewhere either. (although I don't go to too many other places online.) And I visit here at least once a day.

Off-Topic: Has civfanatics been losing advertisers? I see less ads on the site. The banners at the bottom of every page always read "The page cannot be displayed". Is this due to the recent site modifications?

They have been getting out of hand lately; they are interfering with my ability to use the site as they will pop up when I am trying to click on a link and send me somewhere worthless, or prevent me from typing.

your site has almost become unusable, smjjames and others have caught most of the ads i'm seeing but something pops up almost everytime i change screens. it's this site and this site only i'm having trouble with. sysop here need to do something and do it quick or your going to be losing a lot of folks to other civ sites.

i use IE7 and popup ads here were so annoying to me that i installed firefox to come to this site. firefox(at least so far) seems to stop the ads here that were getting past ie7 even with it's popup blocker set to max.

@ KingFlevance, yeah people think because some freeware spyware/virus detector comes up nil that there is nothing wrong with their system.

Anti-Virus is always behind the trojans and viruses, and will never find them all.
Anti-Virus programs generally wont find BHO's either. Something like Nirsoft's ShellExView or HijackThis! is needed in those cases.

A handful of people getting these means - your system is jacked. Not this site.
And IE is the easiest browser to infect, as it's imbeded so close to the backbone of the OS.

BHO: Browser Helper Objects

oh yea? if you know so much about these browser helper objects then why don't you tell us how to get rid of them?

I use Opera, and haven't had the built-in pop-up blocker enabled in quite some time. The only site that seems to favor pop-ups (that I visit) these days are the ZiffDavis family (PCMag et al). There are a few instances where I've gotten a pop-up elsewhere, but not a site I frequent, or the pop-up wasn't consistent.

Most websites have eschewed pop-ups in favour of in-line embedded ads. Sites that still rely on pop-ups (in general) are questionable sites at best. Iif you are visiting those - you had best not be doing so with Internet Explorer, and have a FireWall that can block outgoing requests. BlackIce and TinyPersonalFirewall used to be the only ones that would block outgoing requests, Tiny -> Kerio -> SunBelt. Outgoing request blocking is more prevalent in security software now.

Personally, if I'm running a firewall at all, its the version just after Kerio took over TinyPF, Kerio 2.1.5. I'm sure many will disagree, but to me, its the best "Software Firewall" - it doesn't pretend or try to be a total package solution like many of the other vendors have gone to. Feature creep is rarely a good thing when it comes to decent usable software.

I do have hijackthis!, so that should help.

edit: ok I used it and removed a couple BHOs, lets see if this works.

Edit: still popups, I thought I removed all the BHOs.

Can I post up the hijackthis log? I was pretty sure I had removed them, unless it's not the BHOs that are doing this....

Still helps to report them to Telefragged since CFC have to cater to all browser types, even if IE is only a fraction of them.

Also, the sites I visit really don't have these popups like I'm seeing here, so if removing all the ones that HijackThis lists as BHOs doesn't work, then what? If peoples pop up blockers are going off on this site, then that means that something is making the popups show.

hmm, I think I have popups enabled on this site because of the PM popup, I'll try and see if that does the trick.

edit: nm the popups enabled thing, but the options in tools says the popup blocker is on. For some reason I had the send to bluetooth addon on, but I have the hardware off, probably won't affect anything though.

so if you know so much about this tell me why its only this site, cfc, that i have problems with. i haven't seen one of these pop-up anywhere i go except here.
and i don't use ie, just for the record.

Well you must admit it is odd no? That a handful of people are experiencing this and no one else?
I've had my system completely hosed before, pITA to get it back to normal. The amount of time it took to clean it, I could have reinstalled my (hotfix) slipstreamed Win2K/XP disc, but I was stubborn :-)
Even so it took some creative workarounds cuz the anti-virus|trojan|etc software was next to useless once something is truely embedded into the OS. Lately these things like to attach themselves to the WinLogon process which is a nightmare to deal with at that point.

no, only a handful of people are REPORTING it, there are probably many more experiencing it.

Plus the person who posted before you said that they don't use IE, so obviously.....

I have to agree with Balderstrom. As I have said I am 100% unprotected on the net. I use IE, have no firewall enabled because I keep it down to play a couple online games I have (Civ being one of them) - I don't run a pop-up blocker because, well, frankly I don't need to because I dont have pop-up issues. I am skinny dipping in the net with no protection between me and it. And I get absolutely zero pop-ups here. I am practically begging to get them with my setup, and I don't.

Plus, this was originally posted in Gen Discussions. That's where I found it as I don't make my way to site feedback often. Based on when Methos moved it, it was in Gen disc for almost 24 hours and only a few people had replied. (Probably meaning it was of no concern to people posting that day that did see the thread) Other than the OP, only 2 people stated that they got pop-ups here other than the OP. But that could also just easily be a matter of coincidental timing of a background program if that is where the pop-ups are actually coming from. I am sure if this site was having a wide amount of people experienceing these issues this thread would have made it to 4-8 pages in 24 hours. But instead it made it to almost 1 page. Mostly people saying, "nope" and an occasional off topic comment.
