Pre medieval era, just beat 1 enemy off my island, left with 1, what now?

Sorry I didn't get a chance to comment earlier. But for me Monte is the king of whipping... due to his excellent UB. That means cities need lots of food which means you can't aford too many cottages since they replace farms. I know that is contrary to the advice others have been giving you.

Key techs are :
a) Currency for markets and ability to run merchants and built wealth... that will get you out of the economic mire.
b) Code of Laws for your UB ( :king: of :whipped: ) which also solves city maintainace costs and gives 2 EPs... Ignore the Caste System until you get Pacifism and then there are some great tricks to pull with Monte since he's Spiritual. Just run Caste System and Pacifism for few turns then back to Slavery and Organised Religion to build more buildings.
c) Civil Service needed to chain irrigate. I can't see your maps properly but you need to plan where your chain of farms need to go before building any cottages that might need to be cleared later. Getting fresh water to a city can make a huge difference to its size in the middle game.

I've always noticed that when i get banking and put up a few banks, all my economic woes are over. Key techs I use in games are:

Alphabet (for trading techs you may get behind on)
Writing (you'll need libraries to run scientist specialist when economy tanks)
Monarchy (for city growth through happiness via hereditary rule civic)
Code of Laws (courthouses and caste system if more scientist are needed)
Currency (+1 trade route, markets)
Calendar (for added happiness)
Civil service (run beuracracy if capital is strong)
Guilds (grocers)
Banking (duh)
Printing press (big boost to cottages)
Democracy (for good cottage civics)
Corporation (extra trade route)
Economics (extra trade route with free market)

What you should do in that case is drop your religion. Have no state faith and they can't hate you for your beliefs. Or, if possible, switch to their religion.

If you share a religion with Alexander, the obvious thing to do would not be "bribe cyrus to attack alexander" it's "bribe alexander to attack someone who hates you".

If they have a diff. religion from you, they also have a diff religion from alex which makes them a likely target for him.

Getting two of your rivals in a war will help you have time to build your economy.

Alexander will probably attack anyways, so why would you need to share a religion with him? It's not like he'd go easy on you just because you share a religion!
