"Gurkha, flying a swift and powerful flying machine, hurled a single projectile, charged with the power of the Universe. An incandescent column of smoke and flame, as bright as ten thousand suns, rose with all its splendor.

It was an unknown weapon, an iron thunderbolt, a gigantic messenger of death, which reduced to ashes the entire race of the Vrishnis and the Andhakas."

-The Mahabharata

"Then who was king? Who was not the king?"

-The Sumerian King List

This game started out as a random thought experiment to create a Cold War scenario in which the real life powers (America and Russia) were completely neutered. I eventually wound up (with a lot of help) creating a more or less full-fledged timeline out of it, if one that aims for an interesting setting more than strict plausibility. There are two major divergences here: one, that Tecumseh is far more successful during the War of 1812, and two, that the Chartist movement leads to a revolution in Britain in 1848.

What results is a Cold War-esque scenario - starting in the year 1950, five harrowing years after the Franco-British Union detonated an atom bomb above Tsaritsyn and sent shockwaves around the world. The world is split between three major powers: the democratic, capitalist Franco-British Union that is the hallmark of old colonialism; the technocratic, corporatist Mexico that has vanquished the United States and now is challenging for power in Europe itself; and Japan, which is what in our world might be called market socialist or syndicalist, and now presides as hegemon of a rising Asian bloc that is ready to challenge the traditional colonial powers. But a whole host of other powers, such as a modernised Ottoman Empire, the newly forged Eastern European powerhouse that is the Intermarium, and the venerable East India Dominion, are. And large parts of the colonial world are chafing for independence.

I would like to especially thank J.K. Stockholme for providing the base map and contributing invaluable assistance with the stats, and (deep breath) Bair_the_Normal, christos200, Crezth, Decamper, Double A, jackelgull, Johanna, NinjaCow64, Nuka-sama, Omega124, Red Spy, Reus, Seon, Tolni, and Tyo (exhales) for their assistance/listening to my ramblings at various points during the creation of the game. (I may have forgotten some people, apologies; let me know if you are one of them and I shall add you to the list)

I will be perfectly honest: this is, by a long way, the most ambitious game I have ever run. That means some issues might crop up as I try to adjust both to the game and to CFC's new formatting. So please bear with me if there is any weirdness does appear, and apologies in advance.

Where is the ruleset?

Coming. I know what I'm doing, just need to organise some things before I post anything about this.

When is this going to launch?

Rather slowly, probably, and it depends on how this thread goes. I'll be slowly working through getting everything set up over the remainder of the month. I do aim to get the game thread up by the first week of December or so and begin updating from there. Updates will probably be at a leisurely pace, maybe once every 3 weeks or so. Contrary to popular belief, I actually do have a life.

Will this game have nuclear weapons?

Yes. I'm aware these have been a bane of games in the past but I will be upfront about this: what's a cold war game without nukes, after all? They'll be playing a pretty forward role, and I think I've got a system to make these work - more on this as we proceed.

When are you resuming Nagayana?

Anyone who asks this question will be thrown into my personal snake pit as a sacrifice.

Contacting Me: I am usually somewhat active on IOT's discord. Note that for reasons I am invisible there, so I will appear offline even when I am online. Ping me, I will respond to you as quickly as I can and I apologise if I don't respond immediately. Feel free to talk or ask questions about anything - the background, stats, random silliness, whatever. Trust me, I love engaging with people like this about my games, so no question you ask is stupid (aside from the aforementioned 'When are you resuming Nagayana?')

I'm also happy to answer questions via CFC (though I am still getting used to the new PM/convo system so please bear with me) or via my Steam (which I'll give out via request)

If you're new, I'm honoured that you're looking at my game! Feel free to contact me privately through any of the above means if you need help or have any questions whatsoever.

A list of claimed countries so far is in the next post. If you're just coming in feel free to claim whatever country you like.

Spoiler :

Now for how to actually sign up.

Because of the very weird patterns of interest I got during development (namely that upwards of half a dozen people seemed to want particular powers) selecting countries is going to work slightly different from what both you and I are probably used to. I ask that you list 3-5 preferences for countries in order, along with a brief description for each of why you want them and/or what you plan to do with them. (Just one or two sentences will do; I'm not asking for essays. In fact please don't give me essays) Additionally, please do not apply for more than 1 great power and/or more than 2 secondary powers.
The Great Powers in this case are: the Franco-British Union, Japan, and Mexico.
The Secondary Powers are: Argentina, Canada, East India, the Intermarium Federation, and the Ottoman Empire.

These do have gameplay roles aside from just perception; I will go over those in more detail when I talk about stats.

I reserve the right to move people wherever. Additionally I also reserve the right to disregard people's posts that list 1 country 5 times. Please don't do this.

Now that all being said, if your first choice is a non-power that is no one else's immediate first choice, I am perfectly happy to confirm you as that country early.

I highly discourage you from applying for powers unless you are willing to commit heavily to this game. I want to ensure that everyone can still have fun even if they are not a power. For what it's worth, were I to be playing in this game, my four choices would be Korea, Florida, Nusantara, and New South Wales, none of which are powers at any real level.

Also, I'm generally not assigning countries on a first-come/first-serve basis, so even if others have claimed a country you can still list it.

1. Argentina:

Because I like this corner of the world and also it's fairly isolated from the whole European mess and all that deal. All I want is political dominance over South America by spreading glorious liberal ideas and also unrestricted capitalism.

2. Republic of Colombia

Argentina's Mexican foil.

3. Italy

Europe's new rising power! Kinda.

4. Republic of Persia

Look, I like Republics, alright?

5. Free Russian Republic

Colonizing Siberia!!!

1: Franco-British: in addition to combining my homeland with my Francophile tendencies the revolutionary background will make a interesting taking.
2: Scandinavia: a empire that has to counter larger empires may pose a intriguing position in diplomatic considerations.
3: Canton: who will be China?
4: China (Democratic Republic): who will be China?
5: China (Jiang Empire): who will be China?

1:Zuidafrika Republic - Because if I didn't pick an African state it'd be out of character, even if it's the Boers. as Zuidafrika, I'd try and play a bit of diplomatic chess and try to unite the three republics under my rule.
2:Griqualand - Actually, reasoning's the same as Zuidafrika, but this time, I refuse to actually unite South Africa. Griqualand independent pls
3:Nepal - I don't really have any reasoning for being Nepal, other than the hats are really fancy and you get a complimentary gurkha. Presumably I'd do my usual become-the-switzerland-of-(CONTINENT)-shtick.
4:Greater Mongolian State - I don't know, but trying to fight over Siberia seems fun while having to deal with China being weird.
5: Don-Kuban State - Obligatory Cossacks. I'd try to be a semi-militarist power here, could be fun

2. Sindh
3. East India

Subbing, will make a selection at some unspecified point in the future.

Greece - Because.... it's Greece.

1. East India Dominion--Unite South Asia not by bullets but by bankbooks
2. Cape Republic-Showing Africa and the world that multiethnic states can work
3. Canada- Working on a building a better Canada and keeping the US and Mexico under a watchful eye
4. Japan- A non militarist, imperialistic Japan? The possibilities are endless
5. New England- Eager to cast a new role in the post war world.

1. Scandinavia - Oh, do I ever not want to play this dream thing of mine? The cultural tradition and background knowledge sits fine with me, allowing me to do storywork that I feel is both somewhat authentic and interesting. I might even purchase Sibelius again and produce some music, but we'll see about that, it's several gigabytes large. Other than the cultural particularity, having a nation where I balance both a liberal, centre-left state resembling the real world Scandinavian model and actually not screwing up my African colonies humanistically would be my goal.
2. Sudan - My interest in this area is the opposite of Scandinavia. Sudan seems stable and promising enough, but the East Africa situation seems unstable, and I'm actually quite interested in trying to establish some form of horrid results here, depending on the opportunity and realism of the horrors. Sudan can go both ways, and either will work for me. If East Africa collapses, I can prematurely say that I will probably end up worsening the situation. Problem is I know very little of the area, so I have little creative ability.
3. Egypt - I've taken interest in this area lately, and I think doing a minor power on the edge of European and African-Asian affairs would be interesting. I'm expecting to try and be more influential than I actually have capability off, involving myself in a large alliance and opening my borders to international trade, giving me more international influence. Problem is I know very little of the area, as with Sudan.
4. Portugal - Well, I just find the position to create a Western European mini-China interesting, and if it fails, creating a hellhole is interesting too.
5. None yet.

1- Florida: A modern and multiculturalcultural hodgepodge in a not-necessarily stable region with ties to keep cutting and heritages to cherish? Sign me up! I wanna do the cultural game with this, possibly. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. 2- Indiana: A diverse multicultural country in the midst of post-war reconstruction and under clear influence of a regional power, clearly a place to chill for a bit and focus on more interesting things than usual. Hype!

1. Mexico I've played around with technocratic ideological fascism in SKNES ii, and was hoping to lead a nation to a narrative conclusion to it. I find it narratively interesting and I also have a huge Mexico boner.

2. Florida the idea of playing a chill builder game as one of the few optimistic places in the world appeals to me a lot.

2 Argentina
I like the idea of playing the slightly left defender and sponsor of Global Democracy abroad, +I like weird south Americas

3. Juliana another cool chill builder game, plus alternate South America. I've actually tried to build tourist havens in NESes before, maybe this time the swedes won't attack me and let me do my narrative

4. Mongolia what can I say Buddhist fundamentalist mongol fascism. Seriously though I like the opportunity to rise to a third pole in Asia independent of the Great Powers.

5. Peru Bolivian Confederation[)B] I'm s sucker for alternative South America, what can I say.

1. Oregon Republic. I live here, that's pretty much it.
2. Kingdom of the Netherlands
3. Cape Republic

Ignore last claims

1. Franco-British - I want for once to play my hand as a democratic great power. I will model my policies after those of US in post-cold war era. I will support anti-leftist and democratic countries, swiftly punish aggressive states, support free trade and fund democratic groups abroad. Basically, I find appealing the idea of being leader of the free world. An example of this playstyle may be my Chinese Republic in IOT XIX where I supported free trade and peace.

2. Greece - Want to model Greece after Singapore and make it the economic powerhouse of Europe by following pro-business libertarian economic policies.

3. Canton - Seems interesting and I am experienced Chinese player. Will try to contain leftism in China and uphold democratic values.

East India
I'm interested in balancing centralised and capitalism with social progression. I want to RP internal government compromises while growing as a regional hard power and global soft power .

Intermarium:

Seems like a nation of options- politically it could go back to being with the democrats and its allies from the 2nd european war or it could follow the path it begun in the 30s and go more security-apparatus technocracy thing. geographically its allies have been variable and it has reason to work with, and against, most of the regional powers.

Colombia:
the bad-guy of S. America! the counter movement to Argentinian overreach with its neighbors
Right wing revolution

Canada:

traditionalist power to serve as foil to mexico... classic cold war spheres of influence with Mexico across NA.

Canton
light of progressive thought in the east. opportunity to shape eastern culture more than most. due to divergence from regional norm. the Juliana of the east

1. Franco British Union, because you need someone fully willing and able to kill hundreds of millions of innocents in the role of a super power.

That, and I feel as if I know the most about this nation than any other in this game. I will support Imperialist agenda and spread the ideals of free trade and human rights to the rest of the globe.
2. Scandanavia
3. Canada
4. Spain

thanks everyone!

1. Bengal : Just because I am here.

welcome, I'm very glad to have you, but could you list at least 2 other countries? just for consistency's sake.

Also, known errors on the map:
-Jian says "Jia" by accident.
-Zuidafrika is misspelled (both here and in the backgrounds) as "Zudafrika"
-East Turkestan should be the Emirate of East Turkestan, not a republic.
