Predictions of US Soccer

They already have a good team and could win a WC if they were lucky but they don't really have the great players who can win the big games...

Yeah, team US impressed at the last WC. Add to that that the US is the nation that will ALWAYS qualify easily due to the stupid system their continental federation uses...
But that's also a problem. About the only team with a certain skill they'll ever play against outside the WC is mexico.

Friendlies don't count, of course.

Although it could work to our disadvantage, I would love to see a merger of the North and South American football confederations. In the long run it would probably help our team to play Brazil and Argentina on a regular basis. The other teams in the Western Hemisphere we are already competitive with.

That's... an understatement. A merger of both confederations could be good, but then there should be some poule system like we have in Urop.
The south american system is really hard, if the US could make it through that they are really a top contender.
And, sorry to say this, if you're looking at the technical potential atm, they're not. No one knows what the future will bring though.

BTW, merger of those confederations is a bit strange: that'd mean that about 1/3 of the whole world is in one poule. It's like combining Africa with Europe. But then again, FIFA is nuts.

The difference is that our natural rivalries are with the Latin American teams (after all we are both part of the Americas). The same cannot be said of combining Africa and Europe.

I think you are confusing geography (or something) with football. If you look at the world in football terms the Americas even in total are not a third of the world. However Europe is, now.

If American qualifications were merged together then they would need to adopt the group approach to WC qualification rather than having the one big league approach. You would have expected a lot of managers to complain by now that South American teams must have to play more qualifier games...

I have a feeling that America's performance in the last World Cup was akin to Cameroon's in 1990. A one-off spectactular that was as much down to circumstance as ability. I predict that they won't get past the first round of the next World Cup.

Of course that depends on the group that they are drawn in and if the other teams bother to play... Remember Portugal last time...

Also the World Cup will be in Germany, which should greatly benefit European players. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the following won it, England, Germany or Italy.

Play Brazil!

I know enough about Soccer to know that Brazil is an OK team ;)

Seriously, although playing soccer is fun (my second favorite sport to play),
Nobody watches it.

Major League Soccer players formed a player union and demanded a collective barganing agreement. The league closed a team to try to prevent them from loosing more money.

Most Americans feel that when they have a choice of watching a Soccer game, they would rather

a) Watch Golf (more exciting)
b) Take a Nap (More exciting  )

Most people feel Soccer is up there with the WNBA for the most slow paced game in existance.

(The good news is Soccer is still ahead of Crickett, which no one understands)

Most of the pride the world puts into Football, America puts into Football (NFL)

I hope Soccer is gaining ground, but it is obvious that there is little interest a national game. Maybe the international game will get some attention near World Cup time (Who knows)

BTW, When is the World Cup anyway? (I might try to watch it)

My prediction is the US qualifies to WC easy and with up and coming star Adu, they make the final 8 or semifinals in Germany. Well, maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Except that we all know that England always promise so much and then lose to some average team...

That'd be in 2006.

You're right about slow paced, but that counts especially towards the MLS (imo) since they have a lot of lousy or elderly players. (Good) football isn't really slow paced, it just has some major lags occasionally.

On the other hand, those are 9 out 10 the moments something happens, but only when you go to get some beer

Personally, I can't stand american football, since it's so slow paced... I think it's just what you're used to. Americans are probably eager to see what happens after the scrum, and get their beer before that, when you know for sure that nothing will happen since all players are just standing there, having some gatorade (yuk)...

I dont like a game where I have to watch the replay just to see what happened - so that rules out NFL and ice hockey for me. I find NFL too slow. Too many stoppages. On the other hand I love cricket. :Hm:
