PREVIEW: SymNES II

Since you two agree, is there any chance one of you could take one of the lists of essential words from this thread and start matching these words to the Proto-Asonic roots in Post 143?
If you explain exactly how very clearly, sure...

No, it does not. To assume that the same consonants as English will be used in another language seems to me rather bland. First and foremost, what sounds are available for use should be clarified.

After that, creating random roots is not the problem, nor even assigning them words and definitions. It is the other, more difficult aspects of language, such as sentence structure, which are very important. Also, you have to formalize things such as plural rules, different verb tenses, how one specifies what a very applies to, the possible addition of masculinity/femininity in nouns, etc.

Anyways, first and foremost a decision has to be made as to what sounds are to be used for each proto-language. I will have a suggestion up tomorrow. I have a set completed today, but I am about to go to sleep, so I'll put it up in the morning for review. Hopefully it makes some sort of sense when I do. :)

EDIT: Aren't Josef and Jalapeno in different cradles? It makes little sense to use the same roots for both languages, unless I am completely misunderstanding Jalapeno's post, which is very possible.

We use english sounds because I really don't want to hassle everyone with having to make þ and ð and ʤ when they could simply use the english derivations of th and dz for each :p. If you really want to add accents or funny symbols, no one is stopping you, but there are only so many different sounds a language would realistically make.

But yeah, the grammar and sentence structure and such will be for another day. We're hammering out the basics now, we'll work on SVO and whatnot later. It would be awesome if all our people spoke like Yoda though. I officially advocate Object Subject Verb order!

@Thlayli My thoughts exactly on the proto-Algonquin choice, it was between that and the proto-Pama-Nyungan.

@First Cradle Players: Does that look good then? Shall we start assigning some basic words to the roots?

@Swiss and/or another Origin 2 person:

1. Take Josef's list in Post 114.
2. Make the modifications to it suggested in Post 115.
3. For each word on the resulting list, pick a root from the list in Post 143 that corresponds to it, using whatever sense of aesthetics you have. Try to avoid duplicates.
4. Post the list of correspondences.
5. If you have time, add in some of the words here. We want things more like "air", "animal", "tomorrow", and "keep" than "but", "if", and "the" (i.e. we want function words, not content words).

Understood?

Retroactive deletion.

I'm going to cast a vote against all of the names for Origin 1 suggested so far. Here are a couple on the fly:

Eradic
Ulaic
Haldri

Hah, can we get some names that aren't vaguely similar to existing language groups :lol:

And Eradic reminds me too much of erratic. I guess that only leaves Haldri for my personal tastes. Though I still prefer my Veseldi.

I apologize, but i'm trying and i can't be doing this right at all. From what i gathered from the posts you sent me looking for, I'm supposed to apply these rules to these words. But it doesn't seem to be changing much of anything, other than making King have 2 gs and making woman=Honan....

I'm doing something wrong. Probably everything.

m>n,b>d,p>t,f>s; n>ng,d>g,t>k,s>x, w,r>h.

King/Chief/Leader= Kingg/Chief/Leader
Man=Nan
Woman=Honan
Moon 1
Moon 2
Sun= Xun?
Earth (our planet)
Tree
Water
Horse
Sheep (Not sure which animals we have to domesticate)
Cattle
Chicken
Corn
Warrior
Wheat (? Maybe we should wait on the various resources first)
Green
Red
Blue
White
Black
Eye
Arm
Foot
Leg
Head
Group (A collection of people)
Thing/It (An "it" word, or generic "thing")
Basic Numbers
God(s)
Day
Night
Pronouns
Basic verbs: (To be being the most paramount, as previously mentioned)
Fight
Grow
Die
Live

And Eradic reminds me too much of erratic. I guess that only leaves Haldri for my personal tastes. Though I still prefer my Veseldi.

I just find it... unmusical. A little discordant. It's up to the people, though. Or Symphony, as the case may be.

@Swiss:

Look at the spoilered list of roots in post 143. Then, for each word in the list above, pick a corresponding root. Any corresponding root. Just make sure you assign each word a unique root.

Then post that.

Does that make sense?

@First Cradle Players: Does that look good then? Shall we start assigning some basic words to the roots?

Seems fine to me. I'll try and get more active in the process later on, so don't take my inaction as apathy. As to the name of our language, I'll just cast my vote for anything that doesn't sound too much like an existing commonly used word.

We're past that point, we need to choose among the new names :p.

And I'll do some matching up of roots to words for everyone's viewing pleasure. Don't be afraid to criticize it and yell at me for any repeats or crappy sounding ones that slip by.

I demand topography. ;)

@Origin Two People: Can we all agree on the structure and root list for Proto-Asonic detailed in post 143?

I don't suppose I have anything of substance to complain about, other than the fact that I had used my own, admittedly much poorer, idea of proto-Anosic (mainly based on ripping off and ruthlessly bastardising proto-Tungusic words for a start) for the ethnonym. Meh. Maybe you still could use proto-Asonic while I use proto-Anosic? :p

No. Again, there's nothing preventing there from being a separate language family.

Considering this, I may just make my own language family, although it depends greatly on how much I like the one the rest of you come up with. Regardless, I'll help you in any way I can with yours, Josef.

@Das: You could use Pre-Asonic...

Anosic, damn it, Anosic! :p

Anosic, damn it, Anosic! :p
Really? I've been spelling it Asonic all along...

How about we call the family Proto-Asonic and then you can be Anosic?
