I recall about 10 years ago Prince Charles paid a brief visit to Canada, and made one of his customary pretentious remarks. He said something to the effect of "Why don't Canadians study proper (i.e., The Queen's) English in their schools, and why have they let some of those insidious American spellings creep in to their usage?" I know Americans are used to being lectured about their lack of British English, but I was surprised at the response from the Canadians; for a whole day the Toronto radio stations were fuming and seething with anti-Charles tirades. It was pretty amusing, at least from a distance.
I think Prince Charles, for all his charity work, is a poster boy for why most of Europe has either ditched or demoted their royalty. He clearly is not in touch with the life of his average "subject". Reminds me of George Bush Sr. during the 1992 American presidential elections when he visited a foodmarket (with cameras in tow) and was amazed at how a cash-out line works with modern scanners. That was a clear sign he knew little of how the average American lived...
