hello!

I'm having some serious problems installing beyond the sword on windows 7. It says:

The version of the file you are trying to run is imcompatible with the version of Windows that you are using. Consult the computer system informations to figure out if you require a x86(32bits) or x64(64bit), then contact the software editors.

I'm running windows 7 64 bit. Is there any way around this problem? Because I'm starting to think I'm buggered. The base Civ 4 installed just fine. The beyond the sword won't install...

try the following: copy all the contents of the disc(s) to one folder on your hard drive - then locate the setup.exe, right click on it and choose run as administrator - maybe that helps.
Googleing this error message only shows up one other instance of it - but also without any possible reason :dunno:

Edit: there *might* be a problem with the installshield install you have - you could try deleting/renaming the installshield folder on your computer...

None of those work. I suppose the installshield folder was the program files/common files/installshield folder?

I tried that, didn't change anything. And yes, there's only one related google result I get and it's on "the pirate bay" of someone who commented on the torrent of this game that he had the same problem, with no solution posted...

Um, no. I think that the Installshield folder that you need to get rid of is located at:

Drive:\User\AppData\Roaming\InstallShield Installation Information

At least this is where it is on Vista x64, and Win 7 x64 is quite similar in the install paths, as far as I'm told. Remember that AppData is a hidden folder. You'll need to unhide it to get rid of the sub-folders in it, but don't delete the folder itself. I had some trouble when I did that once, and I had to resort to registry edits to get something uninstalled. It wasn't much fun. :(

I would recommend that before you get rid of the InstallShield nonsense that you uninstall BTS. Then get rid of the InstallShield stuff, then re-install. Don't just let the setup on the CD auto-run. Right click the setup and run as admin. Allow the game to do the DirectX 9 update (Win 7 uses DirectX 11, IIRC, but don't worry, BTS shouldn't mess that up.), then finish the install. Start the game to see if it actually runs before you patch. (It may not, for compatibility reasons, addressed by the patches.) Apply the patches, and you should be fine.

Win 7 is basically a leaner, meaner Vista, with a fancier user interface. I have seen BTS run just fine on the release candidates on my room mate's computer, and it was patched to 3.19. IIRC, it wasn't even necessary to use the XP VM to get it to run. It ran in normal Win 7 mode, just like it does on Vista.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the attemps but I can't get it working. whenever I doubleclick the setup.exe file(as with administrative rights) I immediatly get the error message and nothing more.

:(

And yes: the disc was dameged. I downloaded an image from TPB and now it works. I believe it is legal to download things if you bought them. Or at least where I live it is. Anyway, thanks for the help :)
