Prozac: Kid Tested, Mother Approved

Sween,

Yes i agree that our memory influence our present brain chemistry and memory's chemistry is totaly unknow. Imagine a chemical reaction which give you picture of the past, not easy my friend , but my point here is what give the order to your brain cells to produce more or less serotonin ? a chemical messenager

Then what give the order to produce chemical messenager ? You need at some point an order from nowhere to start the whole thing.

I edited my previous post, it was burried on page 2 with the cr..py post.

I feel like we've been hit by a nuke, a really really gay nuke, and we are cleaning up the remnants of OT. :ack:

Too bad the guys in those white bubble suits are nowhere to be found...

Speaking of nuke... that's where the other porn spam was.. in Civ3 Gen! (in a topic about nukes).. Why do I always get them?

A really sinister plan. Make society worse than hell, a big labor camp of misery but eliminate the risk of rebellion by putting all the people on happy making drugs. We don't need that old school N. Korea-style stalinist oppression anymore. A nation on Prozac - that's better than 1984 and we can still call it a "free society".
The people have the right to make changes you know it's just that they don't want to because everyone is happy...

(I know that some people have genetic defects that cause depression but these people only make up a *very small* percentage of the population! Drugs like Prozac are used to keep the people silent and to make them accept the inhuman conditions of today's society in 90% of the cases.)

(Clinical depression) There is no self-correcting mechanism and you cannot just do something about it. In fact, one of the main features of depression is that it takes away your will to do anything about anything. The whole notion that a depression is simply part of what you are is just plain disgusting.

Count to ten.:)

I didn't say you can just do something about it. People who want you to pull yourself up by the bootstraps really don't recognize that a seriously depressed person is drowned and no amount of kicking and gasping will make that person break surface. I wouldn't say, "Smile and you'll be happy" or any other variant on "motivate yourself and you'll have motivation" - I know that's nonsense. It's nonsense because there is no "you" independent of "the disease" that can step outside of it and lever it. Severe depression saturates all of you - including your expectations. I happen to think I'm the sum of my strengths and failings. If being prone to depression is a failing of mine, I'll admit it rather than deny that it's a part of my self. After all else fails, some people need drugs to change themselves, but this depends on the individuals and the unique situations they're in.

The difference is when you are angry, that is easily fixed. Just count to 10. When you're scared, ditto. It all blows over.

I don't think it's all that different. Being angry or afraid can lead to a lasting resentment and/or hatred that lingers for a long time much the same way as a tragedy would drive someone to depression.

It is quite clear that there are many people in this thread who don't. To them, I'd suggest that there is plenty of information available on the Internet for your googling pleasure - then maybe you can enlighten this discussion with some actual facts.

I'm not sure what you are saying here. Because I'm not on Prozac my concerns are dismissed?

My mother (and doctors) seemed to think there were some things wrong with me growing up... I've been on the following...

Depakote
Respiridol
Addiral
Lithium
Effexor
Ritalin
Prozac
Zoloft
Dezipramene
Thorazine
Klonapin
Wellbutrin
Luvox
Xanax
Klonopin
Remeron
Dilantin

And I can tell you this, drugs are bad. Been drug free for 'bout three years now and I'm happy about it. The only pills I'll ever take for the rest of my life are vitamins and herbs. Prozac is one of the worst, it really effects one's personality, I've noticed in myself and others that it tends to make people more callous and less wary of risks and danger. I had a crazy ex-girl that was on way too much Prozac, when I broke up with her she attacked me! :) Now I'm not saying she wasn't nuts to begin with but the Prozac certainly didn't help.

Out of all of them I'd say Wellbutrin had the most positive effects but overall there is no drug I've been on where the benifits were greater than the side-effects.

Just Say No!

Ritalin (and analog of the amphetamine speed) has been shown to work, and its safety profile is quite good, with loss of appetite and possibly loss of height being the most concerning.

When you say "work" what do you mean? Next to Prozac (and of course Thorazine) I see Ritalin as one of the worst drugs. Whats worse is that it is given to young children (like me from age 7-11) for example. I can vouch for the appetite thing, I didn't eat lunch for 6 months in 5th grade. I also felt less energy from this drug (although that could have been because of missing lunch  ). When I refused to take it my mother used to slip it into my morning orange juice.

Medicating children shows an incredible laziness and lack of imagination. There are so, so, so many other ways to attempt to improve a child's life besides druging him/her up. And all those who talk of depression as a disease, I understand your view, I have experienced very severe deression about 15 times during adolesance but people seem also to think that drugs are the only way to change brain chemestry. There are many other ways, excersize, sex, doing something you enjoy, having someone geniunely take an interest in you, changing your diet, triumphing (a study was done after a chess tournament and the winners were shown to have higher testosterone levels than the losers, funny huh?).

People like drugs because they are easy, just send little Junior off to school with his colorful pills (along with his shi*tty lunchable snack and two bars of candy) and tell him to behave in school and afterwards let himself in and sit quietly in front of the TV until you arrive home at 9pm to tuck him in. Sick sick world!

I agree with narz last posting, much better to take care of your " soul" then trying to modified brain chemistry, unless you suffer from chronic and congenital depression.

Taking care of your " soul " doesnt mean in a religious way ( i am not religious at all ), it mean listen to yourself, iditify the true source of problem, solve it, have pleasure ( sex, food, movie, friend, ect..). Working issue are more difficult to solve, you need a job to survive, and lots of poeple have burn out.

Smart, Narz.

I see that laziness and lack of imagination in parenting pretty often, sometimes in myself or my wife. I can't count the times I've asked parents why their kids are crying, and been told, "No reason." Yet every time I've taken a moment to consider an upset toddler, the cause of the upset becomes clear.

Unfortunately, it's the rare single income that can support a family. A lot of parents are opting for the double-income-and-daycare lifestyle. They might do that to buy a house or pay off debts or whatever. The children pay. The children pay their parents in lost time, which the parents trade their employers for money. Then the parents try to reimburse their kids with some of that money, sooner or later. Some of it might even go to buying anti-depressants for the pining kids. Circle.
