I get nervous before speaking, but I don't have a problem with nervousness while I am speaking. I'm not very good at it either (I say "um" and "uh" too many times in every speech to count and have no clue I'm doing it).
I bet my public speeking professor would nail you on the "um"s and "uh"s ;).

I didn't see public speaking as a fear experience; It's an opportunity for me to BREAK DOWN some taboos people have. If I'm going to tell my opinion on something, I'll tell it, no matter if some people get nervous from my sayings, and no matter if a priest/teacher/president/pope/parents are watching me.

If there's 2 things that REALLY annoy me, is hypocricy and false-stupidity. I want straight answers when I'm in a serious conversation.

Used to scare the crap out of me... not literally.

Now I'm alright with it, I can be pretty candid and I don't shake anymore. :p

I used to dread it but repeated exposure just showed me it was nothing to be afraid of. That was a bit of a problem in itself though, as I just got too blase and bored- of course the crowd got bored as well.

Nervous beforehand
Usually fine during
Often exhilirated afterwards. :)

Back in my catholic days, I did readings at mass. That was pretty cool. Last time I spoke publicly, was a radio interview back when I was in college. What made me nervous was not talking to the mike, but making sure I didn't say the wrong thing. Live, no script! I was really trying to avoid "umm" and "like".

I also had a job in a bowling center during the Bowling for Dollars league. Not really a league... but the manager there would do a running commentary during one game, and the other desk guy would do it during the second game. I would do it during the last game. There was quite a few people doing this, it was rather popular at the time. That went off pretty good. In fact, thanks to CFC I wouldn't mind doing it again so I can rant and rave about whatever....okay, that job would last a day...

Never been really itimidated by it, but on the other hand it's something I'd rather not do.

If I’ve got something good to say then stage fright goes out the window, it's when I give a speech on something I not believe, say like a term paper for a grade, that gets me annoyed and thus hampers my speech.
