Puppet Empire

Still no luck uploading this, so the file attachment will have to do for now.

Can this MOD be applied to an existing save game

It should be able to, because it doesn't have any extra units/buildings or require any extra saved data- it's an instantaneous decision that uses an already-existent game mechanic. I haven't tested it though.

ModBuddy uploads seem to have been wonky for the last few days- possibly while they ramp up for the patch.

Just tested this version on a fresh civ install (updated) and It isn't working for me, no matter how I install it. It appears in MOD browser, I can check or uncheck it, but it isn't doing anything, like before... Must be something about my CIV copy I guess...

Just tried applying it to a game which had only gone 30 turns and no joy. It wont load up the save game, just crashes out. Only had the capital city, no other cities yet.

The game had been started using Version 2, however when I founded a city it didnt give me the option to make it a puppet. So tried applying version 3 and reloaded a game before the city was founded.

@Slunko: Try installing from the ZIP download provided at the bottom of page 1 of this thread. I haven't been able to upload my latest fixed version to the in-game mod database.

@Dono1979:
Yeah, I tested it and it fails if you try to apply it to a game saved without this mod. Sorry. :(

Seems like I couldn't post my reply last time i was here... Anyway;
I got this one to work, and it works like a charm.
for anyone having the same problems; Mods showin up as installed but not doing anything, here's the solution;
DO NOT BE A FRIGGIN IDIOT! (Like me) If you want mods to work, you gota start the game from under MODS>SINGLE PLAYER not from the main menu :P
I'm so embarassed...

No probs, it looks like I might have a bit of a weird one with version 2 as it isnt giving me the option to create puppets for the first couple of cities I founded. Dont really wanna start a new map and apply version three as my start in my current game was pretty awesome (got Eldarado and three different luxeries within my capital radius!)

I will try again once I get dominated by the computer to the point I need to start a new one.

This mod allows founding of cities after your capital as puppet cities, allowing for expansion without disabling your national wonder in progress or increasing social policy costs. These puppets will need to be annexed if you later want to take full control, so be careful!

Available on ModBuddy.

I can't help but think I remember someone suggesting this in a thread I read, which inspired me to try it, but I can't find the thread now. Speak up and take credit!

Also: I make absolutely -no claims whatsoever- as to whether this is or even -can be- balanced.

Hey man, love this mod! One question and one suggestion though.

Crap, just noticed that someone already suggested my suggestion... :-P

Question: why do you have the popup show up after conquering a city? It's already part of the built in dialog to do a puppet.

Suggestion: you should do a similar mod (and then make one that combines them) where you can settle a city-state. Make it permanently allied if possible, if not then put a ridiculous amount of points towards relationship. If possible, make it so that you can pick what type of city state it is :-)

I don't know how much others would like this, but (especially if they ever fix city-states so they actually fight with you when you're at war) it would be good to have some city-state allies right off the bat that would stick with you for the rest of the game. Then you could also put them in key positions to "buffer" your empire from enemies. City states seem to be able to hold up to enemy attacks pretty well.

Oh, a possible bug. If I load a saved game, I usually get a popup about whether I want to turn a city into a puppet. It's usually the last city that I founded or conquered.

The mod seems to work and load fine for me, but anyone else having this problem?
The new "puppet cities" I make using this mod still add to my cultural policy cost, which kind of defeats of the point of making a puppet in the first place.

I am using v.4 from the in game mod browser.

I think I have had that problem too. Maybe not always but definitely think I have seen my cultural points go up. I'll look into it some more though and reply again.

Also, I think the developer has quit working on this Mod.

Thadian, what is the new workshop? lol. Is that for developers? Are you going to pick up development on this? If so, send me a link to where I can follow your work please!

Androrc the Orc, thanks for the file!

I gave up on civ5 modding because i just can't make the mods i want, im better off combining smaller mods i like into a "bigger mod". But i will not release them because they are really just things you can get on the workshop by yourself - no point in releasing a "hash-together".

However, if you play Civ 5, and have not checked out the workshop, go give it a whirl, it is pretty nice. I will check out this mod for problems and if it works fine i will just affirm so here and let someone else upload it - otherwise i have no clue what is different in the file structure.

Edit: Thanks for the upload!

Using this and Minor Civs at the same time could prove interesting!

While I agree it'd be interesting, personally don't see the two mods as really being anything special together. Now, if this mod would allow you to found City States that have a permanent alliance to you, THEN I think the Minor Civs mod would be an excellent addition...

Speaking of which... is that something that is possible? Having the option to build a City State? If not with a settler, maybe with a custom unit? I would love to be able to settle City States and with that Minor Civs mod (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=81352527) making it where they will spread out and settle new cities... that would be freaking awesome.

I'd then want to add a mod that would make City States more aggressive, so that they would actually help in a war...

Hmmm... if City States won't work... is it possible to Settle a new "civilization" that is a vassal or permanent alliance sort of thing? I just started playing Civ5 again recently... they don't even have those options in this version, do they? :-(
