Hello everyone!

Just wanted to get some thoughts about the "best" defense for 1. d4 .. . normaly I play Orthodox defense... but I think its a little of bit old... dont know.. what are your thoughts?

cheers.

The Kings Indian ;)

Yeah, I've been meaning to brush up on this.

I never try to hold it but I make white work hard to gain it back while I complete development. Often leads to endgames where black has a & b passed pawns!

The King's Indian is excellent for playing for a win, but quite good to play for a loss as well.
I used it for years myself, but eventually I find it to be a bit lacking in the strategic sense. So I don't find it very effective against really strong players.

Ah, you mean the Noteboom-variation! That one is an excellent choice on your part!
As for me, I have used quite a lot of different openings during the years. But I have come to the conclusion that 1.d4 is best met with 1...d5. And then I will either play QGA or Slav. Recently i have used; 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Na6!? to good effect, but the main line is also good.
I also recently purchased Moskalenko's book about the Budapest gambit, so will look a bit into this.

TY! :) I saw a couple of online lectures on it & found it very much to my liking, very unbalanced and most players at my level are quite unfamiliar with it & often botch the opening to the point where they don't even get their pawn back. It's also fairly easy to learn for black.

I don't like to play the King's Indian, as I've been crushed many times as black. I prefer the Dutch Leningrad as it has the pawn on f5.
