Question about warfare

In a typical game, how many times (and for how long) are you at war? Ive found it hard to stay at war for more than 20 turns or so in the mid-game, because I start falling behind on improvements and start losing the tech race because I have to have cruddy civics for warfare. I would really like to do a conquest victory at one point but Im not sure how to, as I said I fall wayyy behind in tech if I'm at war too long (behind the other AIs in tech, not the guy I am beating on)

In the couple games that I have played, I usually go to war about 7 or 8 times, but I make an effort to be at war less than 10 turns. I try to determine specific cities I want, have enough units that I SHOULD take them and attack. I usually get half the cities on the first rush most of the rest on the second rush and then do what I can with what is left.

2 points that I think are relevant in my answer. I have been playing on standard maps with the standard opponent Civs (6?) at normal speed. I think a slower speed or bigger map would make me be at war more often and possbily longer.

If I'm not going for domination/conquest I usually only go to war once or twice. I just like to grab a big enough empire that I can get a good research rate going.

It's not your problem.

Sid made this issue to be easiest way to victory.
it's their fault.
Is it possible to war for over 1,000 years?

I generally have two wars each game. One early for territory and one later for victory. How many civs I'm at war with each time varies, but I generally have two periods of war. I occasionally get declared on from time to time, but then I just push back their first assault then get a peace treaty. Maybe take one of their poorly defended border cities or two, but that doesn't really count.

I would say that I have had 3 war periods. The first in the early game with swordsmen/axmen, horse archers, and maybe catapults to stake out my territory and knock out whichever of my neighbors looks like it will give me the most trouble. After I flesh out the map, I find a second warfare stage, with maybe musketment, knights, catapults, etc., to grab any good resources that have turned up that I didn't gain control of in my own territory. Then a third round in the industrial/modern era to try to limit my competitors' ability to develop their space ships. I try to get enough cities during the early stages that I can rotate the building of units among my cities so that I don't fall behind in improvements. I also try to wage wars so that I don't lose a lot of units, so I am not always re-building my armies from scratch.
