Question for Europeans

Why do Europeans care so much about what's going on in the US? Let them elect whoever they want and live they want to. I don't see european countries doing any more for people around the world then the US does...

1) whe are allies ,thus we have our interests in America's foreign policy
2) The world is globalizing at such speed that within 5 years everybody will have to care about everything everywhere
3) we are economicly very tied to America
4) There are a lot of Europeans living temporarly in America

and probably much more...

Why do Europeans care so much about what's going on in the US

Because we are not little isolationsaists who dont give a diddly squat about what happens elsewhere in the world as long as it doesn't affect them (remind u of ne where? :))

:D
HA! I've seen some of the crap you guys have on over there. Although I do like some Brittish comedy, Who's Line, Red Dwarf.

As an American who lived in Europe for over 5 years, I have a different take on this.

IMHO a large portion of the ideas that Europeans get about America come from either American TV shows (mostly horrible), American tourists and American military personnel. Of those, I believe the presence of our military in most of the European countries has caused alot of the animosity.

In a sense the majority of European countries have had a US military force occupying it's territory since WWII. Are they jealous because our military is much stronger than their own, or are they angered because they have to be protected by "foreigners"?

When I lived there, the "ugly" American was alive and well. Americans can be very brash and not very understanding when it comes to change. We send 18-25 year old men and women to live in a different land, with different customs , and different laws, when a large portion of them had never even been outside of their home state before. Then we tell them they must protect these people who are different from them, with their lives if necessary.

As witnessed by our history, and regardless of what the American media would have you believe, Americans are not very tolerant of other cultures when it affects them directly. We are mostly spoiled by our conveniences, and we take our freedoms for granted.

I think on average, all people of every race and culture have good intentions and will try to do the right thing most of the time. However, I sometimes think that a lot of Americans think they are the only ones trying to do the right thing (and they typically aren't afraid to tell the world this).

I apologize for the rambling (I was watching the news while typing this). I hope I got my point across.

You all must have forgotten that america is 300 million people. We have a thing called Freedom of Relgion and other Bill of Rights ect....meaning everyone is different in their religious beliefs. We have radicals and what not. Why in the **** should you care? Europeans i mean. Its a US problem not your problem. I mean if the Penacostals decide to revolt against the g'ment along with the Methodists and we need your help we'll yell for you.

the CIA killing Kennedy......right....who killed Kennedy? the CIA! Have proof? No but i know they did! I heard it on a tv show!:o

We're 'too bossy' because if we do something we'll get bull**** from everyone. and if we don't do something we'll still get bull**** from everyone. So if we're gonna do something we're gonna do it with force either military or political.
Do you get my drift?

And why does europe have to follow us? They don't sign the Kyoto Treaty because we don't? Now thats some bull****.
Its not like we're gonna become hostile to you because you sign a treaty and we don't. An enviromental treaty at that. Although most of you do deserve for us to become hostile towards you for all of the **** we have to take from you and your media.

I say we leave the middle east, let Israel take them out and let the pissed off muslims kill themselves with their dictatorships and starve to death.
It will certainly save us money, instead of airdropping food all over the ****ing world.
Where's the middle finger smilie when you need it....

why the **** should YOU care? Grrrrrrrrrrr.........

Mikoyan? You KNOW nothing. You're what? 14 years old? Anything you know is pumped into your prepubescent brain my mommy, daddy, and Big Brother.

Juize, I PERSONALLY don't care about the Afghan Government. If it were up to me, I'd have taken over the world years ago. Killed off anyone who didn't like it and agree with me. Just think, you'd be an AMERICAN!!! :D You'd be proud and arrogant just like me! :goodjob: Like I said, I PERSONALLY don't care too much. Kill em all, let Allah sort it out.:)

Nice arguement using age as the simple way to put him down! I especially like your end statement then I think a few other people may want to take over the world as well. :D

Floppa, you mean old bastard, that didn't really answer my question, so why do you address me when you don't have anything SANE to say anyway? You're probably the most arrogant and stuck-up person i've ever encountered. And why do you always use that green smilie that looks like he's got a broom stuck up in his behind? Just shut up with the age discrimination, will you!? or are you just too stupid to debate in a CIVILIZED manner!?

& a failure as a moderator in this thread. It was informative & interesting until you butted in. Look at the turn it has taken now ! Just like when EON of late departed memory used to derail good discussions by calling somebody a moron. Grow up ! Would you ?

And as for my stupid attack on you, it was stupid. I was in a stupid mood. Forgive me? Serious, I 'm sorry and it was just a spur of the moment thing. :) I still like the "mean old bastard" part though.

More like an outrageous rant ! Who is talking age, maturity & "whining" here? If you want to vent your frustrations.. find a more constructive way to do it. This thread has degenerated into the normal "SPAM" thread now.... congrats on your excellant work.

I thought this thread just sort of fizzled out and died on it's own? Like most threads, the conversation became exhausted and the topic switched and whatnot... Spam... If I spam, I get some postcounts dropped from my name? That would be cool, it's embarrassingly high as it is... :p

And again, I apologize for my contribution to the devolution of this thread... My mood comes out in my posts, some people it doesn't, me it does. I don't hate Miko or Juize or anyone.(I do like pokin at em once in a while though... ;) ) And at the risk of sounding selfish, I don't care if I do sound selfish, (how selfish of me!!! ) I got MY question answered. Thanks!:goodjob:

I don't think that the majority of the europeans hates the americans, but it is true that there are some important groups who don´t like them, specially in the Left and some urban literate people.

The reason why this happens is because of the influence the United States have in the world these days, and that puts them in the center of atention. After the cold war, and with the present globalization process, the United States have an influence that reaches every corner of the world. It is the price to pay. For example, I wouldn't give a damn if the american foreign policy makes some mistakes, but because this is a globalized world where the US are the dominant world power, that must concern everyone. In fact, even the internal affairs in the US affects the rest of the world, and because of that, every american action is watched closely.

As for Europe vs. United States, or more exactly, the way we look at each other, the problem is in the diferences that we have and that have grown in the last 50 years. In my personal case, for example, everytime I watch american politicians ending thir speeches with "God bless America", I get annoyed, because in european politics God is dead, and I can´t understand how it isn't possible for an atheist person to become the US president. And we could continue with death penalty, environmental issues, the fact that we play football (soccer) and you don't, and the fact that americans are allways proclaiming their country as the land of freedom in a way that almost sounds like a religious dogma, when in europe there are countries with a constitution even more democratic than the american one.

Another thing is the ignorance that sometimes americans show about the rest of the world. I have a friend who went to visit The United States and a mayor of some town asked him "Is there democracy in Europe?" and another guy said "I love riding my bike, how can I go travel to Europe by bike?" These would be a joke if it wasn't for the fact that this is the most powerfull country in the world. And what worries us is that this often happens with people with high responsabilities and high education. I mean, people look at this and ask "How can they elect a president that does not have any knowledge about the world around?" or "How can this guys produce TV shows that are completely abject, where the sex for the sex is the only issue, and then when we look at it we see clouds in every breasts, something that I see wherever I look at any beach here?". Acording to a recent survey 40% of the americans can't point their country in a world map and we say "This is too dangerous. How is it possible that this country is the dominant power, when the majority of the congressmen don't have a passport and never travelled abroad?"

Surely this is not true for every american, but the fact that this happens in a country like USA, then people stay very suspicious about the americans intentions. Finally, the majority of the europeans gets their information about United States in films and TV shows, and most of them are either futile or presenting a very naive and manicheistic (don't know the spelling) view about the rest of the world.

So, in my opinion, the problem is that we are different and everyone seems to expect the other side to behave just like our own.

MGDread, thanks for bringing this topic back on topic so well. very good thoughts. I would respond to one. Americans are not as aware of the rest of the world preciously because so much of what we as a nation do effects the rest of the world. What I mean is this: If another country's actions affect my life, I'm going to be very aware of that other country and know what I can about it. If they don't, I'm not going to be very motivated to care. America's actions effect every other country in the world to some extent, for good or bad (and often both), ergo people in every other country are going to know something about the US. Actions by other countries seldom have impact on life in the US, so we are not as aware of what is going on in other countries. Please note that I offer this up only as an explanation, certainly not as an excuse for our ignorance, which often times is appalling, myself included

Floppa, you are nowhere near old enough to be a mean old bastard, and as your elder demand you change your title at once. Simply "mean bastard" would suffice ;), leave the "old" stuff to us guys who truly deserve it :)
