Questions about The BUG Mod

Hopefully uninstalling and reinstalling BUG will solve the issue, but the others had to reinstall Civ4 & BTS from scratch. I think the others were on Vista as well, but I'm not 100% positive. You're the 5th report of this issue I've seen. :(

Well,

no big deal I guess, given that I play with the standard set-ups, reinstalling everything including patches won't take that long; just hoped there was a simpler solution...

On the upside - the prospect of getting it to work properly WITH the mod is high, so at least I have something to look forward to! :)

thanks for the help anyways!

I'm probably missing something really simple, but how can you check what your cities are producing and the number of turns until completion from the City Advisor screen (like it was pre-BUG). Is there any way to eliminate some columns, so that I can see the column on the far right? Thanks

Plus using the scroll button to the right of the < > arrow buttons, you can customize the pages however you like by adding, removing or moving columns and pages. See the help file for more instructions.

ok, thanks

I think you have that column, dirtyparrot, see on the very right: There's a small slice of a column called "Pr..." standing for "Producing" (or similar). That'll be the column you're looking for.

The single-player install method for BUG means that BUG is not installed as a mod. It is always running unless you are running a mod.

Hi. I have the single-player BUG 3.6 installed using the installer. Does the quote above mean that if I install the HoF mod, BUG will not be enabled when I am running the HoF mod? Sorry if this has been addressed previously. Most of the information I found regarding alternating between BUG and HoF dealt with having BUG in either the Mod or CustomAssets folders of my BtS installation. My version was installed to it's own folder rather than either of those, so I think the posts I read referred to earlier BUG releases. Thanks.

Installing BUG v3.6 in single player mod puts it in the my docs customassets folder. Running a mod that has 'ignore customassets' turn on will not load BUG (if it doesn't have that option on, you might get some python errors and no interface).

Playing a game with 'locked assets' will cause Civ4 to ignore python and xml files in customassets (the majority of BUG, but not bluemarble).

You need to have 'locked assets' checked for a HOF game that you want to submit - so, you cannot get BUG with HOF.

Thanks for your reply. I'm still a bit confused, or perhaps I was unclear.

So the answer to my question is that BUG will still be running even if I load a mod? I understand that I can't use BUG for HoF games (I actually want to use the HoF mod for GOTM games, which also require the HoF Mod) My version of BUG was installed to a "BUG Mod" folder, rather than the "CustomAssets" or "Mods" folder. Does this mean I need to uninstall BUG and reinstall to the CustomAssets folder if I want to use it with the HoF mod (using method you described to lock assets)? Thanks again

Firstly, you cannot use BUG with HOF / GOTM as ...

a) game will not let you if you lock assets
b) even if it (Civ4) lets you, it will cause conflicts / errors

The 'BUG Mod' folder holds the files BUG needs to customize the BUG mod - there are features that you can turn off or on. The actual mod is made up of xml and py files (and some others). My bet is that they are installed under the customassets folder for you.

Thanks Ruff_Hi. OK, to summarize: I have to uninstall BUG to use the HoF mod. Yes? (Sorry, it's taking a while for the coffee to kick in this morning. :crazyeye:)

No - not at all. They will happily co-exist. They just will not both run at the same time. I have them both installed on my pc.

:hammer2: Oy. Sorry to keep asking questions. I am really not this dense. (I think, :D) I think that is what I was trying to ask in the first place. I really just want to know how to do that.

I tried this, and you are correct. I installed the HoF mod and tried running it without touching my BUG installation, I got a HoF error and no interface.

So, if I understand correctly I have 2 options:

1. Tell the HoF mod to "Ignore CustomAssets". (How do I do this? I saw no option in the Options menu.)

or

2. Uninstall BUG and reinstall it as a mod. Then when I want to use BUG in non-HoF games, I simply load it from the "Load A Mod" option at startup.

Is that right?

What I do is start a single player game, then start a custom game (not 'play now') ... not 100% sure of the option, I think it is the 2nd from the bottom.

It provides a screen where you can set up your game and one of the many many options (bottom middle of screen) is 'locked modified assets'.

If you typically play GOTM games, then the saves already have this option checked for you.

OK - I tried starting a custom game without loading the HoF mod and checked "lock custom assets". The game started fine, without BUG being loaded. I then tried loading a recent GOTM game using the HoF mod, and BtS crashed.

It occurred to me that I am using one of the unofficial BtS patches (Dresden's, I think). Perhaps that could be causing the problems with HoF.

Unofficial patches will cause an error message about not matching assets and the game will not open.

Yep. I am pretty sure it is the unofficial patch (and its changes to the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file), and not BUG that is causing the problem. Sorry, I had forgotten I had that patch loaded.

Thanks for all your help, Ruff_Hi.

HOF includes almost every change from the Unofficial Patch. You need to back out the UP changes to play HOF since the UP makes its changes to the core game files that HOF checks for consistency.

The original files should be stored in a folder inside the BTS Assets folder called Backup_before_Dresden or something similar. Copy all those over the ones in Assets. HOF includes its own DLL, so the UP DLL in the Assets folder shouldn't interfere with it, but you can copy it over as well to be sure.

BTW, when starting a HOF game, you should first load HOF and then select SINGLE PLAYER : CUSTOM GAME and check Lock Modified Assets. When you say that HOF crashes, can you be more specific? Do you get an error message from HOF or does the game just go back to the Windows desktop with a generic "this program has terminated" message?

I replaced the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file with the copy from the "Backup before Dresden" folder, and reinstalled the HOF mod. I can start a new game from the Custom Game menu when I am running the HOF mod (Lock Modified Assets was already checked as a default), but I get a "not valid for HOF use" warning.

If I try to load one of the recent GOTM saves using the HOF mod, BtS crashes to the desktop with the standard "Do you want to report this error to Microsoft?" message.

It seems like the best solution might be to uninstall and reinstall BtS using the official patches, then install BUG and HOF and try it again.
