Not knowing how to use paratroopers and not knowing how shields are calculated are totally different things. Without using a custom map or a huge exploit like the ROP rape, I don't see how it is possible to beat Deity if you don't know how to best use your terrain, especially if you think you can build up a huge stack of swordsmen, yet your FP is already built? I am a bit confused by the information here...

Lol playing on diety doesn't mean you know all the tricks to the game. I played on diety before I knew why I needed to improve land. I probably lost most of my games but it was still very fun.

I've never played on a world map, but after reading many arguments against adding European civs due to "overcrowding," I figure I should check it out... -- is it possible to play on a real world map on vanilla civ3, or is ptw necessary?

Yes, you can play on a real world map. Simply load it up from the Scenario's bit. But if you are meaning with the correct starting positions... you can't.
Its a good inscentive to buy [ptw] though...

Do it :)

Not good enough for me to buy it two months before Conquests comes out. :D

edit:[party] 2/3 of the way there! [party]

I was hoping someone could give me (or tell me where to find) a quick run-down of the different defense bonuses on different terrain types (with and without a fortress). Thanks.

I've got a quick question. I keep hearing all these people talk about modding their games but i can't find where the heck to do that. can anyone help me out?

I use the Combat Calculator to work out defense/offense bonuses and combat balances. It think it has one known error in that it shows a fortified bonus for ships that appears not to apply,

There's a whole forum devoted to creation and customization topics here

Can someone tell me what a Succession game is?
And where I can find info about them?

Thanks.

Thanks.

A succession game (SG) is a game played by several players in cooperation by passing the save game around. Players publish reports in order to achieve consensus on long term strategies and to entertain lurkers.

Check out the succession games thread for interesting game reports and more information. It has some sticky threads explaining in detail what a SG is and how to play one.

EDIT: Posted at the same time as Gainy bo's reply. He has a slightly different understanding of the concept, though. I guess you'll have to check out the SG forum that we both linked to for an authorative answer.

I think Gainy Bo's idea is more along the GOTM lines.

So according to your description, Lenvik, do the players continually compare progress and do it as a team, rather than an individual competition?
That must take ages!!

thanks for the link.

Any chance someone knows how to circumvent a missing reference in the pediaicons.txt file? I keep coming up with this error while attempting to mod Civ3 (not PTW).

Sounds like you've added a unit, and you need to add the graphics or other unit info to it. Not exactly sure how to do that, but if you go to the customization and creation subforum, you will get a better answer there.

Edit: Alameda, huh? Cool. Grew up in Fremont, myself. ;)

Thanks for the post Turner. No one's talking on that other forum thread ... If anyone cares to help me out over there check out my post on the Colonization thread ...

I remember that thread. I was going to respond to it, and had to do something else at work.

Can one assume you've d/l'd the latest mod at his site? If not, do that, and reinstall the mod.

I've also noticed that he assumes you have the game installed in the default directory. This can be a problem if you're like me and don't install to the default directory.

So, I would try d/l'ing it again, from his website here, and reinstalling it. You might need to do a clean install of Civ3, just to make sure. That can be a pain indeed, so I would do that as a very last messure. Try emailing him, if all else fails. Or PM him through here. Other than that, I can't really say without diving deep into your system. . .

Can someone please explain me how to play a game with the WWII or Japan units?
