Tim is right. I would estimate that 80% of the time, it is best to settle in place. Move the Worker (and Scout, if Expansionist) first, to see if there is a better place within 2 tiles. As a general rule, I would say *never* spend more than 2 turns moving before settling the first town; rarely move more than one tile.

FWIW, unless there is an obviously better spot just one tile away, I will settle in place on the first turn.

IIRC Arathorn & Co waited 100 turns before they founded their first city in a regent game.

I come across barbarians and they are fortified ... does that mean that other civs are nearby or do they sometimes fortify without a catalyst?

First off, thank you for an incredable site of relivant information and resources.

 When I discover steam power (I think it is) my workers begin building railroads even though they are set to automate without altering. I even tried to remove the railroad improvement once and then none of my workers would automate any task. How can I keep them from building railroads where I DON'T want them? When I play with my friend, railroads can be a very bad idea if he becomes powerful enough to invade. :(
Another question...is there a way to get around the 1000 city maximum for all civs on a map?
And :) , how do I get the game to use the folders in my senerio. I'm not sure how to do this (and after playing the game for some time I'm finally deciding to build a senerio) with the editor. The editor help file touches on this but is vague and don't want to go around in circles (I do that enough at work)

RRs are a high priority item for auto workers. The only way to keep them from building RRs is to manage them manually.

No way around the max city limit.

Under scenario properties, you have to set a search path.

Thank you. So, for example I would enter the path like...
C:\Program Files\Atari\CivilizationIII\Conquests\Scenarios\MyScenario
and I would acknowlage all the folders there?

It's a relative search path from the biq location. You don't need the full pathname. And... i think it automatically looks for a folder with the same name as the biq file first... although i may be mistaken about that.

"Farmer's Gambit" is whe you build no (or very little) military in the early game, just Settlers, and more Settlers, to expand quickly and claim territory.

It's a gambit, because you might get stomped on by Barbs, or worse, another Civ can take you out without even blinking, since you have no military.

The Sirian version of the farmer's gambit contains culture, too.

I've been reading this great story in the Succession Games section and have a couple of questions:

Q1. when they're talking about what a city is producing I often see things like unit_name->unit_name. I understand that for instance the following: "Middleburg warrior -> worker" means that production in Middelburg was changed from warrior to worker, right? But then what does "Amsterdam sword -> sword" mean?

Q2. these succession games are often named with an acronym, for instance the one I'm reading is LotR10. What does LotR mean? Not Lord of the Rings I presume? Is there a list somewhere with these acronyms?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi, How can I replay the saved games in HOF section. I downloaded CPrSuite but it does not work on the downloaded games, it works only my own saved games. Do I have to extract the downloaded games. Thank in advance. Sorry if someone has posted this before, I have done searches for 2 hours but could not find anything

1. sword -> sword means a city just finished producing a swordsman and is beginning another one. Warrior -> worker doesn't mean it was changed, but that it just finished a warrior and is now starting a worker.

2. I'm not sure what "Lot" stands for, but the names are often based on the screen name of the game's host. If I were doing a series of SG's, they'd probably be named "GMA01, GMA02, GMA 03", etc. If you started a series, they might be "Lord01, Lord02, Lord 03", or "Valentine01", etc. :)

Edited to add the "warrior -> worker" sentence.

The HOF games don't come with multiple saves for CRPsuite to use for a replay. The best you can expect to get is the minimap replay at the end of the game. This assumes they are submitting the turn just before the game ends.

I just loaded a C3C HOF game that was saved the turn after a 100K Cultural Victory into the CRpSuite and it replayed fine!

(However, I must confess it was one of my own games......So, unless Dianthus put a restriction on viewing other peoples' games...... )

@C_Caesar: Are you running Conquests, Version 1.22 AND opening an HOF Conquests file? ;)
