Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I just read in another thread that roads don't need to be built to mines... good to know.
So my question is, are all irrigated tiles considered "improved," being farmed, or is it overkill?
A tile is considered 'improved' when a road, mine, or irrigation is built on it. I suppose one could consider fortresses and airfields 'improved' as well.
And, is it a good idea to automate workers at any time of the game?
No, it's not. However, I tend to automate 'Road-To', 'Railroad-To', and 'Clear Damage/Pollution'.

The Clear Damage/Pollution can hurt you too, especially if you have a city that has pollution/damage and that city is seperated from your civ by another civ. They'll try to go to that city and it can be disasterous, especially if you're at war with that civ. Otherwise it's just a pain because the govenor will keep sending workers over there until the damage/pollution is cleared. So you could have a bunch of workers in transit to clear that damage/pollution.

IMO, it is never a good idea to automate workers. However, it is not not a horrible idea once you reach the point where you are not entirely sure what to do with them. That can happen after you have railroads and issues with pollution.

Just as long as you also read in that thread that you are losing out in commerce (apart from a few very rare situations when in Despotism) if you do not add the road at some point. Roads add +1 commerce to each tile and if you are in Republic or Democracy, this could be a loss of 2gp per tile if that tile had a base commerce of zero. Also nore that those loses would be even worse when in a GA.

Thanks
_____________________________________________________________________________________Hey, I usually just play the game as it comes in the box and try to kill; I've never really used mods or any of that other neat stuff. I know on the main menu for my game it says "Load Scenario" but I don't know how to use the editor. Is it some extra thing that I can't access from the main menu or do I need to download it, or what?

The editor should be available through the Start Menu. It'll be called Civ3Edit, ConquestsEditor, or some such. You'd be best off to check out the Creation and Customisation forum here for specific help, I guess.

I've been playing a game on warlord for a while, go a ways-find failure, back to early save, ya know. Anyway, after bloody war with French on my continent, I received a nasty surprise from an "allie". We trade, we have a non-aggression pact, we have a trade embargo, we speak "polite", you get the picture. Then, out of the blue, and right after a polite re-agreement of non-aggression, she attacks in large force and sunders my territory in two!!

How do I tell if someone is shining me on in negotiations. Verbage is limited and "tone" is displayed. Are there signs I missed?

Also, I have had other civ's keep disrespecting my borders. (I think they wanted open space I had in the center of my turf that I was gradually filling in) Any way to stop that? I eventually just went to war and knocked them back a few cities, but that costs time and science and etc.......

Just wondering how to read the AI

Mike

You could place troops at your borders to stop them physically from getting through, but that costs time and shields.

Just tell them to get out using diplomacy. "Hey, Joanie, your pathetic little infantry are breathing on my space," you know, that kind of stuff. That doesn't often work, because the AI are stubborn, but sometimes they get forced out.
But if that doesn't work, find a way to physically not allow them in.
Or, if you can't do that, try filling in the "gaps" with cities to fill in your territories. Then the AI will have no interest.

The short answer is never trust them.

The slightly longer answer is always make sure that you are in a position to counter any attack they make. Have a strong offensive force, preferable fast-moving units, so you can kill them as they arrive.
A stong offensive force will genrally deter invasion, but sometimes they go suicidal.

I have seen this a couple times, now, but what is "wrong" with posting in a thread that hasn't been posted in for a couple years?

What I mean by "seen" is that some people say (in the beginning of their post) "At the risk of my (something) I will post in this old thread."

What would be the point in posting in a 2 or 3 year old threat? Who would it be for? The original posters are mostly not around any longer or at least have no further interest in it.

Usually it is just some post that adds nothing anyway. The down side is people come and see a new post and then realize it is a dead thread.

We don't really like old threads being bumped. If they're dead, let them stay dead. However, if you have something to add that's relevant to the thread, and not spam, then we allow it. But if you find an four year dead thread in, say, Unit Graphics, and bump it with "Nice Unit", you'll get warned for it.

This thread has only been posted to twice in the last 2 years:

But......SirPleb's Date/Score Utility program is something I use in all my (more-than-30-minute game) HOF attempts..........very useful program. :goodjob: :goodjob:

P.s. Has anyone seen SirPleb lately? ;)

I think Eman's way of handling the post above is an excellent way of commenting on old threads. A link so people can take a look if they like, and then a comment, can start a whole new discussion, but with the reference available. If a comment is worth making, it probably doesn't need the entire old thread awakened.

When you zoom to a city and there is a soldier with a happy face (in the garrison, bottom left corner), Does that make him have a better chance of killing an enemy. Does it have any effect at all?

It's simply saying that you have happy people in your city. This has benefits for your city's productivity. Nothing beyond that.
