Yep. And that's why once you get rails, it's time to chop those forests down, unless there is some special reason not to. A forest doubles the time it takes to rail that tile, doubles cleanup time for pollution or craters, and generates less food. Only on tundra would a forest be an improvement, once you get rails.
 
:agree: Forests are only good on tundra cause all you can do to a tundra is mine. A mined, RR tundra gives 1 food 2 shields, same as forest.

There is 1 more reason to plant forests. Global warming attempts to destroy all forest and jungles first before going for grasslands. This way, forests act as a buffer preventing global warming from destroying productive grasslands.

wait a minute...I learned that it increases output of the terrain improvement by one (e.g: an irrigated grassland normally gives 3 food, but 4 with a RR)...so, umm, who's right?

You're correct, sercer88. Rails give 1 additional shield on a mined tile or 1 additional food on an irrigated tile. Sometimes that "just happens" to be 50%, but only coincidentally. :D
 
Question: I noticed in my current game that the number of happy/content/unhappy citizens changed when I moved my science slider. The funny thing is that my luxury slider was at 0%, so moving the science slider couldn't have changed entertainment. Is it a bug, or is there some explanation?
 
ok so what are the unit packs in civ 3 play the world, the units screen on this website says something about them. also what are they used for.

I've noticed the same thing. I think this is a side effect of rounding the numbers. In fact, I started a thread at one point called "Science makes me unhappy!" or some such when I noticed that moving the science slider changed the mood of the citizens in a city.

But this rounding error can not occur when the lux slider is at 0% right? Or does it happen even when at 0?

There are three unit packs w/ ptw: WWII, Medieval Japan, and dinosaurs. They are for your personal use but the WWII and Medieval Japan units are also used in two scenarios that come w/ conquests.

I've seen this, too, but only under the following conditions:

1) Something happened during a war during my turn which causes the cities to begin experiencing the next phase in War Weariness,

2) I've just finished researching a tech that obsoletes The Oracle or Temple of Artemis, or any other happiness providing Wonder,

3) Someone declared war on me during my turn, giving me War Happiness.

Those are the three situations when a sudden change in the number of happy/unhappy citizens changes even though I did nothing to the lux slider.

Also, if you have the lux slider at, say, 20% and science at 80%, then you decrease science one notch, then you may see a few citizens become happier because of changes in the rounding off of commerce at the different percentages.

Well, I'm afraid I don't really know much about this. I looked at my old thread, which is here. In my example, I was running 10% lux. I see your point, though. I'm not sure how the rounding error could spill over into luxury with lux at 0%.

Now that I think about it, though, it seems like I recall some cities generating science even though science spending was at 0% during Bede's Challenge #1. I'll try to find time to look at that to see.

Edit: Found it. In this post from Bede's Challenge, I commented that, even at 0% science, some cities were generating science, even while employing all clowns.
 
Perhaps it could have something to do with war weariness changing marginally. I don't remember now, but it's possible that I had some troops in enemy territory when it occurred.

I've also noticed that when I get a new luxury, the happy/unhappy faces on the domestic advisor screen doesn't update until I move the luxury slider. (For example: I've traded for two new luxuries and I go to the F1 screen to see the effect, and there's no change. So I lower the lux slider by 10%, and then the screen updates, so that there are more happy faces.) Perhaps the science slider also causes the faces to update, and what I saw was the effect of a change in war weariness?
 
My next newb question...

When an enemy unit is standing within my city's workable tile range, is the city prevented from working that tile? This seemed to be the case last night, but I may not have checked my other nearby cities to see if someone else was working there.

If enemy troops DO prevent working a tile, do friendly units (i.e. RoP) do the same?

Enemy troops do prevent you from working any tile they occupy. If a civ is not at war w/ you though, they do not prevent you from working the tile they may happen to occupy w/ or w/out RoP. :)
 
This can be annoying when you have a coastal city, where a tile with fish or whales is the most valuable within the city radius. It is enough that a barbarian boat passes over that tile, it doesn't even have to stop there. The citizen can't work the tile, and your governor doesn't put him back, so you will probably not even notice that the tiles isn't worked any more. :mad:
 
What are the good points to the governor? I've tried it a few times but it seems that my cities either starve to death or fall into disorder.

I've tried giving him control of all cities a few cities and various aspects of the cities. Is there a secret that I don't know?
