Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

lymomd,
I know I must be trying your patience but I will be damned if I can right click any CIV game in Steam, I have 4 in my library. i simply don't see how to get to the "Original Release" version. I have rummaged around the Steam site for an hour clicking every damn thing I can - nothing. It cannot be just a right click.

Well, not sure what the problem is.. My instructions were very clear, and certainly clicking all over Steam is not going to do anything.

You mentioned "Steam Site". What exactly do you mean? You are using the the Steam Client, right? Are you using Windows OS?

I purchased the civ4 complete version from amazon. It came on DVD with both civ3 and civ4, all expansions for both games and civ4 is patched to 3.19.

Hi,

I am new to the forum. Not so new to the game- i hope! :D
I play on Noble, 99% of the time on Pangaea map.
I 've won almost all Victory conditions except conquest. I read a lot of opinions /before i reg in the forum/ on that topic but still didn't manage it. One time i tried and almost manage it actually BUT stupid Asoka won a diplo win! WTH. Second time I tried and triggered Domination win... sooo as u can see I am doing something wrong, not sure what.
I will be glad to see some discussion on this direction cause I really have the crazy idea and urge to do all kinds of victories before jump on to Prince some day.
Thanx ;)

Hi..welcome to CFC!

First, let me point you to the Strategy & Tips forum here:

https://forums.civfanatics.com/forums/civ4-strategy-tips.155/

If you really want to learn the game, that is the place to be. Besides existing and ongoing threads of various nature and forum games, you are also encouraged to run your own shadow game. You will get a lot of advice and learn quickly to move up levels.

Regardless of victory condition, I'm sure there are a lot of basic concepts you need to learn or relearn. I think you will be quite surprised at how different you will play the game once you learn a few things. Civ IV is a very complex game. Even after over 10 years of playing, I still learn something new now and then. But there are some core concepts that can apply to every game. And honestly, once you grasp these mechanics you should soon blow the AIs away on a difficulty like Noble.

As for Conquest victory vs. Domination, it is really about keeping track of the overall land percentage you and your vassals own (vassal's land counts 50% of the overall total percentage). The victory screen under Settings shows the current pop and land percentage you own. Tripping Dom before Conquest usually means you've played a longer game and have expanded and conquered approximately 65% of the land. Simple solution is to not keep every city...just important ones that can contribute to the war machine.

Here's a few basic things that you can start thinking about:

1) FOOD is king (FOOD=Production)
2) Slavery is the most powerful mechanic in the game
3) Most important unit is the Worker (worker is usually the first build in almost every game)
4) Most important building is the Granary (most other buildings are very situational to irrelevant)
5) Do not neglect Great People, especially Great Scientists early. Get up a library soon in cap and run 2 scientists for the first GS for an academy in your cap (usually)

Ponder that, and continue discussing in S&t

Yup i did that and my 2 vassals didn't have so much land i kept them small, like 2 or 3 cities, capture capitol and only good cities with wonders or holy cities, raze the rest. but yeah maybe i had so much land simply because i killed 3 of my nearest neighbours at the beginning.
Of course there is so much more to learn with this game. Unlike any other game, i dare to say, cause even after years u can still learn things!
Thanx, for the tips- but most of them are newbie ones I already know. As i said i'm not a pro/ very good player, of course , but i am not that new either. ;)

True..but you'd be surprise how many new members I've seen come here with years of playing and still not knowing some or all of these things, so worth mentioning. If you have some grasp of those concepts, you should probably not be playing Noble. Time to move up.

Anyway, see you over in Strategy & Tips for some real learning ;)

Hi, plz could anyone help? For some reason, I can't build Apollo Program.. I play a standard noble / epic / archipelago game, with default rules (except for 'Lock modified assets' clicked). I do have Space victory enabled, I have researched Rocketry, but still Apollo Program is not available in the city info screen. Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

If it's greyed out, did you start building it in another city?
It's not greyed out, it's just not there at all.
I mean, is there some kind of setting that could disable Apollo program other than Space victory?

well, it seems I have been looking for the Apollo Program among wonders, but it's a project, not a wonder, so it's in the lower row (with culture and wealth)...
Embarassing :)

To my knowledge, that is part of the game's engine and not directly moddable. Unfortunately, you must have the music drop out and hear the city SFX, including that stupid babbling baby in the middle ages.

Could one replace the city SFX itself with different sounds though?

...and the infuriating barking dogs. That is the reason I have those sounds turned off. Some of the music has become annoying too after all these years, so I've turned off that as well. I just want to enjoy the base game, and will instead play my own music in the background if I feel like that. Or ASMR videos or something (aye, I'm one of those morons, but it's nice for background sounds).

 I've been listening to ASMR vids for years...pretty much puts me to sleep almost every night...and sleep is very much a commodity for me. Probably seems silly to most at first glance but it is really effing briliant.

Good point though, you can simply shut the whining babies up with a little click of a checkbox in the options.

Is there a way to run Civ4 in a "windowed fullscreen" mode? I want to run it in a window, to make alt-tab easier, but the top part of the window cuts off some of the screen. The screen gets shifted down, and the bottom bit gets cut off. I run it with a 1920x1080 resolution, and I didn't see another option that worked better in a window.
