Do you guys usually switch to Free Religion as soon as you get it? I used to, but RJ instructed me on the value of Organized Religion, plus I usually build the University of Sangore and sometimes capture the Spiral Minaret, so now I don't usually go FR until the tech (Computers?) that obsolete's Sangore.
Once again, does this forum really have to move to politics? Doesn't that belong in an OT forum somewhere? I shouldn't have to point this out, but the President STILL has the support of a sizeable portion of the US population (myself included), many of whom may be Civ fanatics.
That said, I really don't think I care to read about a Frenchman's (I assume based on the location) opinion of my commander-in-chief in this forum; especially since I'll willing to bet some rather choice things could be said about France's elected leader, whom, no doubt, many French people support.
I am hoping we are adult enough to police ourselves without the moderators.
Well, though I only played one game (I have played all the Civs past though), I found that FR was not good at really any stage (until perhaps the very end). However, this was because my civilization was vastly and almost exclusive one religion and I had managed to spread that religion over most of the world in ancient and medieval times.
But you still need the shrine like fieldmarshall says, right?
My statement was a simple compliment to another poster who made a clever point. I then asked a question about Civ. As for the 30% of Americans who do and will support President Bush under any circumstances, I'm simply not impressed.

You're reanimating a brief and and already finished conversation.
Having the holy city (Cross with a star) AND the state religion (Christianity) will get you line of sight in all cities where that religion (Christianity) is present. Switching to Free Religion cancels this, because it abolishes state religion. Switching to Islam would also kill your line of sight to Christian cities, but give you vision of Muslim cities if you have the Muslim shrine. Whatever state religion you have (or none due to Free Religion) you still get the shrine income, 1/city with the corresponding religion present.
Those that support Bush are likewise unimpressed with people that would call the leader of our nation "Dumb" and more or less poo-poo anyone who supports the President by saying they are "unimpressed."
I said nothing other than that something COULD be said. I was making a point, I said nothing deragotory about the French leader or French people in general, can either of you say the same concerning President Bush?

Edit: To clarify, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a single person that "[does] and [would] support President Bush under any circumstances", much less 30%. Perhaps, you meant 30% that agree with *most* of his policies.

The Beyond the Sword expansion pack is supposedly debuting in July. I certainly hope the name refers to guns and tanks rather than diplomacy and culture, which I am categorically against. Does anyone know of a CF thread or a website with information on it?
By the way, I think most civ enthusiasts would get a kick out of a book I just read, Guns, Germs and Steel. It'll make you very grateful that the game distributes resources on a somewhat balanced basis rather than a historically accurate one.
Edit: Here's something. Firaxis finally discovered Babylon!

i'm categorically for more options for all playstyles, not restricting choices. i'm interpreting various lines on the website as applying to both (admittedly i'm biased).
and yes, i read about that book on CFC. it's on my birthday list

I was kidding about opposing diplomacy and culture, those are fine for other people as long as they don't try to force them on me (I'm kidding again). According to the press release, it looks like non military victory options will be enhanced which seems only fair for the non blood thirsty tyrants out there (sissies). As of Warlords, the game is definitely stacked towards warmongers, and I'm told that's especially true at the higher levels where the AI can easily out produce you but still can't strategically outmaneuver you.
As for GGS, it's been out for awhile, it might be worth checking your library, I only had to wait about a week for it at mine.

I wikipedia'ed it but it didn't seem to say much more. I am excited about the "corporations" bit. That seems really interesting. Still, I just got Civ 4 itself. I haven't even gotten around to getting Warlords yet, reasoning that I should at least play a few games on "regular" Civ 4 first before I get the expansion. Then again, should I?
What do you guys think? Would you recommend just going out and getting Warlords right away or would I miss out on a "learning phase" or anything by not playing Civ 4 for a bit first?
There's nothing to be gained by playing Civ4 first if you're going to get Warlords. It's probably cheaper to get them together. If you already have Civ4, you might as well wait for Beyond the Sword which will almost certainly incorporate the new units, civs and concepts from Warlords.

ZeroAngel: i don't think it's a matter of missing out by not playing vanilla first, more a matter of budget. i predict that if you do like vanilla, you'll want to get BtS when it comes out, to be "up to date" when the frenzy hits CFC! so figure that into the equation hehe.

You can only sabotage buildings, units and wonders during construction. You need to move a spy into the city where it is being constructed and quite a lot of money. And then you can sabotage the production removing half of the hammers invested in the construction. The amount of money needed is related to the amount of hammers that are going to be destroyed, but I don't know the ratio. The mission can fail and the failure chance is higher when the enemy city contains a large number of units or a foreign spy.
After the construction of the SDI, you could still find out where it is constructed and then capture or destroy that city.

The shrine is not a requirement for the line of sight benefit. The other criteria are correct.
I have not used Free Religion in any of my latest games. University of Sankore, Spiral Minaret, and Organised Religion / Theocracy are just too powerful to throw away a state religion, IMHO.
Interesting that we've finally got some news on the second expansion pack. Judging from the information provided, it looks hopeful that we will see a lot of new content in the main epic game, which is the most important thing for me (I don't particularly care much for scenarios).
