I've done a bunch of reading up on Civ4 before purchasing (including the Strategy Guide in your sig, which I also reread before posting the question) and never saw anything to that effect.
does make sense though, since I was probably building a Settler at the time

In my current civ4 warlords game I had a city revolt and join the spanish.
Is there anything I could have done to stop the revolt?
How do I get it back without combat or is combat the only way?

I read somewhere about putting troops in the city might help but im not sure if that was a civ4 thread.
I have also had 3 cites revolt and join me, whats the best way to keep them so they dont switch back, I have one city thats about 32 percent mine and the rest is barbarian. do I just need to put troops and raise culture to make sure it doesnt revolt?

You seem to have the right idea: a combination of stationing a lot of troops there and building the city's culture up with things like a theatre, library, temples, and so on will usually do the trick of keeping a city under cultural pressure under your control.

2 questions

1 What does first strike actually do? Does it equate to an increase in combat strength? Is there a relative benefit or disbenefit to increasing combat or defense strngth at promotion rather than first strike?

2 Defense bonus - how does the game calculate the regen process after defenses have been bombarded? What rate do you get your defenses back? Also sometimes on the main map the defense bonus is different from what you see on the city screen - why is this?

1/ If a unit has one first strike, it means that there is one round of combat when it can not be wounded. It is usually good when you have an upper hand over the opponent's units, because it means that your unit will have less chances to suffer damage, thus either being able to defend against more units (if defender), or be able to heal faster for more attacks (if offender)

2/ no idea But the difference you see I think is due to the difference between walls/castles defences (which gunpowder units ignore) and cultural defences (always up)

2 Defense bonus - how does the game calculate the regen process after defenses have been bombarded? What rate do you get your defenses back? Also sometimes on the main map the defense bonus is different from what you see on the city screen - why is this?

Defenses regen at the rate of 5% per turn, but it's a relative 5% and not an absolute 5%. The idea is that it will take 20 turns to regen back to its full value. The regen doesn't start until there is a turn without bombardment.

For example, assume that the city had 60% cultural defense, and no other bonuses like walls or castles. The city has been bombed down to zero defense on turn 100. On turn 101, it is still at 0%; then on turn 102 it regains 1/20 of its original 60% and so now has 3% cultural defense. Then on turn 103 it's up to 6% and so on.

When a great person is selected there is an icon in the orders bar that looks like a gold coin. That triggers the golden age.

This change is only for Beyond the Sword, an expansion, so if he's still playing the original, it requires two great people of different types. The next GA costs 3 GP, etc.

No. Catapults and other siege weapons don't either

Percentage? No not really. You can go to Victory Conditions then Resolutions to see how many votes each person has.

Hi, everyone. In SISIUTIL’S CIVILIZATION IV STRATEGY GUIDE
FOR BEGINNERS I read the following sentence: "Note: Cottages must be worked by a city’s citizens for their revenue to increase."

How do I "work" a cottage? Is this just another way of saying that 10 turns must pass before it turns into a hamlet? Am I reading too much into it?

Welcome to CFC

A "worked" tile is one that the city is actively using. If you double-click on the city to open up the city screen, worked tiles have a white circle around them and show the yields which they provide with larger icons while unworked tiles don't have the circle. If you choose to manage cities yourself, you can click on unworked tiles to force them to be worked instead.

Note that in the normal map view there are also subtle graphical differences between worked and unworked tiles. Worked tiles have little huts and there are animations which, for example, spin the blades of a windmill. Unworked tiles look more "abandoned."
