Does anyone run BTS with ATI Radeon 3200 HD? I want to upgrade from civ4 but don't want to spend the money if my system can't run it...

Windows wants me to down load Truevision Targa (It's a tga file).

Does that sound about right?

Erm... not sure what the heck that is. An ini file should end in ".ini" and be accessible through Notepad.

BTS should, if anything, run better on your video card than vanilla. There is no reason to worry. If vanilla runs, then so should BTS.

Indeed - in fact, many of the video issues with vanilla were fixed in Warlords/BTS, so upgrading to BTS should only improve performance if anything. :)

I don't see anything that ends in ini. I found one simply labled CivilizationIV that opens in notepad and contains:

"; file format (TGA,JPG,BMP), Warning: TGA requires a lockable buffer which can lower performance
ScreenShot Format = JPG"

As well as a long list of other settings (Chosing 0,1,2 and so on for each setting). This is through BTS by the way and is marked as a configuration file.

I'm either making this to difficult or should just spend more time playing... or both.

Where do I find the ".ini" file to allow me to set up screen shots? Been tinkering with it but not having any luck.

Hang on... I just read your original question, and I think you're making this overly complicated. There's no need to tinker around with ".ini" files (or any other files) if you just want to take screenshots. That functionality is already built into the game! Simply press the "Print Screen" key whenever you want to take a screenshot in the game, and it'll automatically save to the Documents/My Games/(the Civ version you are using)/Screenshots folder in JPG format. Then you can do what you like with the images. :)

Thanks, I have to switch computers in order to play. My computer can't run bts but my girl's can. I think I'm several brownie points short right now....

Yes... but I think I've also encountered this .tga file nonsense also. It is very weird, but when I first started using the PrntScrn button to take screen shots, they would be saved as .tga files, NOT as .jpg; what I did was use Irfanview (free downloadable picture-handling program) to convert it from a TGA to a JPEG so that I cuold upload it here.

However, due to the magic that somebody cooked into this witches brew computer of mine, ever since those first files were converted from tga to jpg, my PrntScrn button now saves the files as .jpg files!

I have no clue how or why this changed. But I can confirm that you could get .tga images, and nothing Windows has can handle them. Try Irfanview, very easy to open them as .tga and save them as any other image file type. Tedious, but if you have the right voodoo like I do, you'll only have to do it on your first batch of images.

A quickie:

Every time a Great Person is born the required GP points for a future GP are increased in all cities.

What happens if several Great People are born on the same turn?

They are not. The cities are worked throuhg in order that they were founded (or captured?) and the first one that would create a GP creates it, and the GP points for all remaining cities are increased imidiatly. So when it gets to the next city that would produce one the required points have gone up and it has to produce the igher number.

Have Civ 3 and Civ 4 and find Civ 4 (as a new new player, haven't played either level more than an hour or two in total) flashy enough to keep my interest, even though I'm not quite sure where I'm bound!

I notice there are several "addons" or expansions in 4, whereas my Civ 3 Complete just has them all. Here's the question -- can someone give me an overview of how the Civ 4 available expansions relate or how they are supposed to be approached in playing order and purpose?

I read something in passing about one listed under Civ 4 being a 1994 version on a new engine, for instance, and I don't have a clue!

Thanks!

p.s. feel free to mention which - 3 or 4 -- would be better for a total new player to start with.

Hmm, I always thought it was the city with the highest number of GP points over the threshold that got the GP? I could be wrong though.

Theoretically though, it is technically possible to generate two GP's on the same turn, although it'd be unlikely - you'd have to have one city with at least 101 GP points per turn in the early-mid game, or at least 201 GP points per turn later on (assuming Normal speed). You can certainly obtain two GP's on the same turn if you get one from a city and one from a tech (such as Music) though. You can also get multiple Great Generals on the same turn, especially if you are Imperialistic (and indeed this has happened to me a few times).

Welcome to CFC! :)

I'd recommend just starting with Civ 4 and going from there. It's not at all necessary to play the previous versions of Civ before starting on Civ 4, and indeed it will be confusing to do so as each new addition to the Civ series has always been significantly different from the previous one.

As for expansions to Civ 4, there are two: Warlords and Beyond the Sword. You don't need to purchase Warlords though, as all of the additions from that expansion pack are included in the Beyond the Sword expansion pack. I'd highly recommend purchasing Beyond the Sword, as it significantly adds to the experience of Civ 4. There's no need to play Civ 4 before starting on Beyond the Sword, although it may be easier to grasp some of the changes in Beyond the Sword if you have a basic understanding of Civ 4 first.

CivIVMonger,

How come when you setup a trade route and check all of your cities. It says that it is only coming from thier capitol?

What it says as I recall is "+25% for Connection to Capital." Not meaning that the trade is coming from the other civ's capital... see this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=159047

It says "+25% if the receiving city has a connection to the Capital" under #2. "Connection" being by road, coast or ocean trade, assuming you have the necessary tech. Doesn't say whose capital though, or which side is the "receiving" city! You could do a Worldbuilder test to figure that out--try connecting their city to your capital, then disconnect it and try connecting their city to their capital, then disconnect that and connect your city to your capital. I am guessing the modifier will apply when a connection exists between their city and YOUR capital, i.e. their city being connected to their capital probably doesn't matter. Let us know if you find out more! :)

Wow, this is good timing. Not knowing which to buy, I got both till I decided. Not knowing what I was buying in Civ 4, of course, may have tripped me up. Am I right in understanding what you said that the original Civ 4, just the standard one, has been replaced by Beyond the Sword? Do I need to buy both and install both? Just install Beyond the Sword and play that one and I'll be getting an updated version of the original?

Sorry, but when I said i was new, I meant new, lol, alas.

1) I need a brief rundown of specializing cities.

What buildings do I build/tiles do I work/improvements do I make for each type of specialist city? What are the common specializations?

2) If a civilization asks me to stop dealing with another civilization, if I were to oblige, would the other civilization(s) know why I cancelled our deals?

As dalamb said, you need to install regular Civilization IV before you can install the Beyond the Sword expansion pack. Just like with any game - you need the main game before you can install the expansion packs. ;)

The only thing you won't need is the Warlords expansion CD - you can ignore that. (Sorry that you bought it without knowing it was unnecessary!)
