Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Please elaborate?
As long as you have a city founded, you always get a "free beaker" out of nowhere that is not related to anything produced by your empire. The purpose of the free beaker is - presumably, amongst other things - to prevent the time estimates for techs from going to infinity when you go to 0% research at the start of the game, or when you go into anarchy.

Anyone know why can't I "liberate" cities back to the original owners sometimes?

City was Viking, conquered by Carthage, it has 98% viking culture, 2% mine, but no option to return it. The Vikings are my vassal.

I don't know all the details, but AI (even AI who are not your vassal, and you sometimes get diplo bonuses for it) will take city gifts if they are within 9.5 tiles of another one of their cities. (diagonals count as 1.5 tiles)

AI with 3 or fewer cities will take any city anywhere in the world I believe.

There might be other factors I'm unaware of.

Hey guys,

Parden a complete illeterate(?) when it comes to computers, but how the heck do I download the premade maps for Civ 4 BTS and then make them playable..? I have no clue what to make of a downloaded rr-file for instance...

Would be grateful for a hint, I'm dying to try for instance a small map of Europe with all the extra civs offered by BTS!

Best,
M

Downloading maps is not difficult.
Just be sure the map (worldbuilder file, presumably) is for an expansion pack that you have installed! Save it to the /saves/worldbuilder folder under My Games/(expansion)/ etc. Then you start the game, go to "Play a scenario" and the dowloaded map should be one of the options to play. Start game as normal.

Not sure what you mean by rr-files, though.

Also, note that the above instructions are for downloading maps... the procedure is different if you want to download a MOD (altered gameplay, usually). That you would download (or unzip) to the MODS folder. Then start the game, click "Advanced" and "Load a MOD". The MOD should then restart the game and be loaded.

Hope this helps... not sure it does since I'm not sure where you are having difficulties in the procedure.

Two things.

Does "No foreign trade routes" from Mercantilism affect the sale of resources as well as trade in the the cities, or just the cities?

Is there a cost difference in upgrading units stationed in a city versus town and country? Or are they the same? (Of course they have to be within your borders)

Like so many other noob questions of mine, I probably know the answers but wanted to double check.

No cost difference. The only things affecting upgrade cost are what unit you're upgrading to (more advanced = more money), and Great Generals (always free to upgrade).

Excellent. Thank you. Didn't know that about Generals BTW.

If you are using your GG for a supermedic, its usually best not to upgrade it at all, so that it will never get called upon to defend your stack. And if you aren't using it to make a supermedic, I find it almost always best to settle it in a city that's making lots of units. But there are rare situations where making a GG offensive unit is worthwhile, too, and then he should be upgraded... but not to a machine gun, wait for infantry. Note, this "free upgrade" property of GG means that its usually better to attach him to an obsolete unit than a state-of-art one.

Never heard of a supermedic but ok, I can see it. I usually go for the GG Academy first in a unit building city like you were saying and an offensive GG second. I spread around some experience with two or three other units depending on the game. I generally try to build the spear head of a strike force.

Supermedics are great. Most players use their first GG to create a supermedic. You take some minor unit (scouts/explorers are very good for this) and attach a GG to them. You promote them using Combat I and Medic I, II and III. This "supermedic" travels with your stack and provides tremendous healing for all other units in the stack even in enemy land. I don't remember the exact healing, but it's like 40% per turn. It really keeps an invasion going. If I have a spare promo for a supermedic I like Morale. Remember, March does nothing for a Supermedic - he doesn't heal, he heals other.

The holy grail of Supermedics is Woody III, Medic III. Even better healing. Problem is that takes a ton of XP's. However, Monty (Aggressive, Jaguar) and Boudica (free C1 and cheaper promos) can often do it.

If you like Privateers, a Supermedic ship can be nice.

Hey you guys,
I have a real noob question here:confused:. have been playing civIV for a couple of years now but have never bothered to patch my bought civIV complete edition. Hey, fellow rookies. I just wanted to mention that I have found WoundedKnight's Strategy Guide (War Academy, Introductory Courses) to be very helpful. After having much trouble winning a game on Noble level, I decided to play WoundedKnight's game. I followed his instructions to the letter (using my own judgement occasionally, as he waffles a little in one or two places) and *bingo*, victory was mine. If you're desperate for a win (like I was): get it, read it, digest it, and play his game. Later, use this knowledge to win a game your way. Have fun!

Several questions:
1.) Whats the diff between a custom game and a Play Now game?
2.) My people always say "It's to crowded" how can I get them to shut up?
3.) My people are always sick how do I make them shut up?
4.) How do I make other people go to war?
5.) How do I do better when attacking? I always lose while attacking but I do well on defence how do I do better?

Also in the late game the end turns take forever is there a way to make the next tern load faster? It takes forever to load to the next turn.

1.) Whats the diff between a custom game and a Play Now game?
Custom Game gives you much more options for setting up your game.

2.) My people always say "It's to crowded" how can I get them to shut up?
You can't. When many people live together in a small space (i.e. a settlement), then this creates unhappiness - at least in the game. ;) Of course you _want_ to have large cities, so you have to provide your citizens which enough happiness factors to balance or outweigh the inevitable "It's too crowded" unhappiness.

3.) My people are always sick how do I make them shut up?
Connect resources which create health to your cities. Build buildings that create health. Health is the white circle with the red cross on it.

4.) How do I make other people go to war?
You choose the respective option in the trade window ("declare war on ..."), and offer them enough to make them accept the deal. Often they won't declare war on a given other civ under any circumstances, in these cases the option "declare war on ..." will be written in red, and if you hover the mouse over it, you'll see a popup that informs you why this option can't be chosen. usually it's something like "We won't betray our close friends", or "We don't like you enough."

5.) How do I do better when attacking? I always lose while attacking but I do well on defence how do I do better?
What are usually your combat odds when you attack? You asked the same question in another thread - in my reply I explained to you how to read the combat odds, but you didn't answer?

Also in the late game the end turns take forever is there a way to make the next tern load faster? It takes forever to load to the next turn.
In the game options, you can switch off "show friendly moves", "show enemy moves", and some "show combat" options. If that doesn't help, then you're playing too large a game for your machine, try to play on a smaller map or with fewer opponents next time.

(Wee - me 100th post in this thread. )

@Darth Fred: K, here's what you do... use a city that already has a general or two settled inside the city... convert to a religion, take vassalage and theocracy (if you can) as civics, build barracks, then stables, and produce a chariot... it will have an insane amount of XP, then latch a general onto it... you should have between 35-40 xp points available to spend on it... you can then promote it all the way to Medic 3, PLUS even give it another MOVEMENT +1... you should consequentially have a level 6 unit, which will allow you to build West Point.

So in effect, you will have a medic that can heal ANYONE adjacent to it at 15% AND you will have 3 movement points per turn!

I had just finished building something in one of my cities and that screen "what do you want to build next" popped up. I must of hit something by accident because now there is a red circle with a line going through it after the city name (on the game play map). Now my city is building nothing and I can't get that symbol to go away. It's the same symbol that you see right after you b\uild something and right before you start something else. I went about 3 or 4 turns and I still can't get it going again. what can I do?

Go into the city screen and select something to build (double click the city, or press insert). Or shift-click (or right click not sure) and select something. You can even click on the city name I believe.
