Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Today I am curious about how exactly the sentry promotion works.

The easy answer is that it increases the distance that a unit can see by one. It's the easy answer, but it's also not exactly true. Viewing distance is not a very well understood subject. I did some research into it and posted the results in post no 2869 of this thread. I hope that the information provided there helps you.

If you own the holy city to a religion, then you get a "line of sight" benefit wherever that religion is spread. Basically, this means that every city in the world with your state religion will be revealed to you, defences and all. Thus you can plan much more effectively for military campaigns and the like. ;)

If I'm not mistaken it has to be your state religion. So if you're Buddist but have Jerusalem as well, you don't get LOS to all Jewish cities. If you've Free Religion you get no LOS, although you still get the income if you build the shrine.

That's true and correct. However (especially if you're Spiritual), you can always switch between religions which you have holy cities for in order to reveal different cities as needed. That can prove quite handy indeed, especially in MP. :)

Hehe I'd thought of that but even with Spiritual you have to wait a few turns between conversions right?

What are the rules for Great General emergence? I only had one GG. He emerged when I conquered another civilization.

I don't have Warlords but as reported you get one in your capital when your armies have won enough battles to accumulate a certain threshold of experience points, which act as "Great People Points" specifically for the Great General. [Azzaman333 says your Military advisor keeps track of those. Glad that guy'll finally be useful for something). The threshold goes up every time too.

There's probably a meter in your capital. The threshold goes up every time too.

Thats almost all correct, except the only way to check how many GG points you generated is in the Military advisor.

Thanks. As I said, I haven't gotten my claws on Warlords yet.

Some poor chap asked this on the chatroom, and I would like to know as well:

If your city is producing research, and you chop down a forest tile, does that give some extra research points?

I have a quick question on the 'March' unit promotion (can heal while moving). Does it apply to the units in the same tile like Medic I and/or adjacent tiles like Medic II or does it apply only to the unit with the March promotion. The description of the promotion isn't very clear. Thank you.

If I get the next expansion (after Warlords), will it be a separate expansion or will it be applied ontop of Warlords. So would I get the features of the new expansion plus the features of the new expansion?

Only the unit itself benefits from the March promo. What I'm curious about is if a unit with March promo moves into a square with a Medic, does it get the Medic benefit? Does the Medic benefit stack with March at all?

Updates like new units, Civs and features like Vassal States and great generals, yes. Scenarios, no.

Already talking about the next expansion after Warlords?? :)

a4phantom - I'm almost certain that's a yes. Medic I and II do stack with March (although half the time you will already have Medic I for the March unit anyway, since Medic I is one of the possible prerequisites to March). ;)

He's heard the same bad reviews I have.

That's usually how my airborne cavalry turn out, since my main use for mounties is as medics and occupation troops. They pretty often go from chariot directly to gunship.

A question: How do you delete Hall of Fame entries? I have a few games which are not "proper" games that I want to get rid of. (These were mainly "test" games in which I tried out stuff using the world builder, then would eliminate all the civs... getting a high score of course, but it's CHEATING so it shouldn't count!)

Any ideas? :)

It involves deleting the replay, but i cant remember exactly how to do it.

1. Do defensive bonuses reduce damage taken from seige engine and aerial attacks? Defensive terrain, bonuses for being on certain terrain (Guerrilla, etc), city defenses, City Garrison, mounties' bonuses against catapults and cannons?

2. What do people think of the new chariot bonus vs. axemen? Obviously axemen are a vastly OP unit in Civ4, does this seem like the right balancer? I ask because I've always liked Persia and I hear Darius or Cyrus got better traits in Warlords.
