Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I'm just being silly. Sorry. You can choose the resolutions. Normally there would be a few resolutions available to choose from, just like with the UN. I think whether or not they come up depends on the triggers for them. In other words all the possible resolutions should come up if there are any possible at all.
At the moment, no resolutions are possible so you're not seeing any.

Thanks for the not ironic wisdom :D

This is a BtS question.

I'm building a late-game naval stack to attack Russia. One of my advantages is possessing Rocketry, when no one else has even got Artillery yet. I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to add an Attack Sub or 2 to the stack, because they are +50% versus Submarines, and I'd rather have them defending my stack versus Submarines at STR 45 + promos, as opposed to a STR 30 Destroyer or a more expensive STR 40 Battleship.

However... I note that Subs and Attack Subs are both flagged as "Invisible to most units" in the Civilipedia. I know that it's pointless to use a Stealth Destroyer as a stack defender because attackers will bypass it (it's invisible, and moreover it doesn't see Subs), and I'm wondering if the Attack Sub is similar. So my question is... under what circumstances will an Attack Sub defend a stack?

- when the stack is being attacked by another Sub, and it is the best defender?
- when another ship attacks and it is the best defender, regardless of whether the attacker can see it?
- both of these?
- neither of these?
- something else?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Submarines and attack submarines can defend against units which can see them. Since submarines, attack submarines and destroyers can see attack submarines and normal submarines and thus the submarines and attack submarines will defend against them when they're the best defender in the stack.

A battleship is a better defender against a destroyer, so if both are in the stack, the battleship will defend against the destroyer. The attack submarine will defend against the submarine.

That makes sense.

So, if no defender in a stack can see the attacking unit, does the attacking unit still attack the strongest defender? Logically, if nobody can see the attacker, the attacker should be able to choose its target (in most cases, the weakest defender, although I can imagine some cases where that would be undesirable).

Strategy question: what do I do in my cities when there is nothing sensible available to build? Does it make sense to grin and bear the maintenance cost of just building more weapons, or is building research/commerce/culture a better use of my wasted production?

I would build more units because the maintenance isn't really that crippling, at least for a strong economy. If you feel that you can't take the hit though build research or gold so that you can take the hit from other cities.

The attacker can only attack defenders that it can see. A defender that cannot be seen by the attacking side, cannot defend the defending stack. If a stack consists of units that cannot be seen by the attacking side, then the units from the attacking side will just move through the defenders.

So a battleship which moves towards a stack of submarines and transports will directly attack the transports since it cannot see the submarines.

It doesn't matter if the defender can see the attacker. A stealth destroyer will still face a battleship when it is attacking a mixed stack of units even when none of those units can see the stealth destroyer. The stealth destroyer can in that case of course choose to stay away from that stack.

Hello. Instead of scrolling through 519 pages of questions hoping to find one that resembles what I want to know, I am going to simply ask it.

So I recently bought Civ 4, but not the expansion packs.

I am looking for mods for the game, to upgrade some of the unit graphics etc... but all the mods I have downloaded are for the expansion packs... can anyone direct me to a location where there are mods that will work without the expansion packs?

I do plan to purchase the expansion packs at some point... alas...

To paraphrase, is there any place where mods can be found for CIV4 without the expansion? Or do I just have to search through the mod forum to find one?

I think you just need to search :(

Don't buy both expansions either. All you want is BTS because it has everything that was included in Warlords.

Does a Wonder like GLH (I'm learning!) get obsoleted no matter who discovers Corporation, or does it only go obsolete when the civ that owns the GLH discovers Corporation? Thanks in advance, that question has been bugging me since I started playing, but I could never verbalize it.

What is the best way to see how some good players play Civ? I play BTS, mostly at Noble level. Usually Elizabeth. I do win, but my early/middle game is not as strong as I'd like. Usually go for BW first if there are enough trees in the BFC. Otherwise, I go for the relevant food resource related tech. Usually don't get a religion until later.

So, I'm looking to improve my play overall. I've looked around the forum to see if I can glean some tips, but this place is quite huge. Can someone point me to some threads/other ways that I can use to see the details of how some good players do the early/mid game? I've done some searches on Elizabeth and so on, but any further help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I was wondering. Is there a way to watch replays of other people's games? That'd be great, seeing how the play style differs from what I'd do customarily.

The Strategy and Tips forum has a good number of ongoing games on different levels you can follow. The All-Leader Challenge that Sisuitil mentioned is one of the best and longest running.

I think it goes obsolete only when the owner researches the tech.

Definately obsoletes when the owner/team discovers the tech.

It is most annoynig to have your rifles thwarted by a civ under the bonus of the Citizen Itza (probably misspelt). The bullets don't pierce rocks UNLESS the civ that has built the wonder knows about gunpowder.

This bug can laso be used to own and run both the UN and the AP at the same time (just capture the UN and do not research the UN tech)

What goes into the "we care for our brothers and sisters of the same faith" diplomatic modifier? Number of my cities with that religion? Number of the AI cities? Personal AI preferences?

It's a combination of how long you've been running the same religion and personal AI preference.

I'd always go with building more units. Actually, I don't know if I've ever built research or wealth - culture yes, but I've never had reason for the others. You can always use more units... if you think you don't need more, you probably aren't fighting enough wars (or else you might need to think about raising the difficulty level). ;) :p

Does 'Favourite Religion' have any bearing on games without 'Choose Religions'? I'm guessing it's not actually favoured in the way civics are.
