Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I think I did the stupidest thing ever in a game possible.
I lost my capital. To barbs.
More backstory: Well, I was playing as Justinian, and I had three cities. I got a warning that barb axemen were heading towards my capital, which was only defended by a warrior, so I got to building an axeman myself to defend. However, my only copper mine was right next to one of Qin Shi Huang's cities, and when the city's borders popped I lost my copper, thus stopping all progress. Being rather pissed by now, I could only watch as my capital was overtaken. And I quit.

After starting another game with Pacal, I really wanted to go back to the Justinian game, as I don't like to see a game abandoned. So should I try and erase my error in the old game, or should I just not bother? I still have a save file from before the barbs, so maybe it could be salvaged. Any opinions or comments?
It's completely up to you. It's your own game, so you don't have to feel like you're not allowed to reload and replay it better if you so desire. If you think you would enjoy replaying the Justinian game from an old save, then by all means go ahead! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :)

The only case where you shouldn't go back to old saves is if you're playing competitive games (such as those ranked in the hall of fame here at CFC). But if it's your own personal game, then by all means do whatever makes you happy! :D

Do whatever you think is fun. That's what the game is for. There are lots of ways to have fun with this game.

Personally, I'd never reload, except if it was to learn what I should have done... and then quit when I learned. Any win with a reload would be tainted in my eyes; sort of like cheating at solitaire.

However, I will, on occasion, go into worldbuilder and add two dozen Modern Armor and eliminate my frustrations... purely therapeutic mind you, not for keeping score.
;)

How much population does 1 "Level" equal? Like a "Level" six city, or so. The popup showing you have 15 million souls I just count the cities lvls and divide. It comes up uneven.
It's an exponential scale... one "level" (as you call it) does not equal a certain number of people. At "level" 1, the population is 1,000, while at "level" 20 the population is some millions. There's probably a list somewhere of exactly what numbers correspond to which "level".

Bear in mind though that only the "level" number is important for gameplay purposes. The total population number is just something that's generated for fun.

Of course! but this is the thread to post it in.

Hi,
what was the shortcut again, to tell your vassals about your war-plan against another civ?
"STRG"+"ALT"+"Right-klick on opponents Name"?

Sorry, I tried the search funktion and looked into the BTS 3.19 changelog,
but I haven't found this.

Thanks a lot,
Mag

That's part of the BetterAI mod, so it only works if you use that mod or a mod that includes the BetterAI mod.

Here's an excerpt from the description of the mod detailing the vassal function that you mentioned:

Vassals prepare for war: Vassals of AI players will now begin their own preparations for war when their master does, meaning they'll have troops available both to defend themselves and contribute offensively when war breaks out. Vassals of human players will default to building more offensive units generally and you can also signal to the AI your war plans by pressing SHIFT+ALT and clicking on enemies in the scoreboard. This toggles your warplan state against enemies so you can get the same benefits during war from your vassals as the AI does. Vassals will now even be able to participate in naval invasions which require a fair amount of buildup, don't be surprised to see them send their troops to the cities you've captured on another continent and set out to make conquests of their own.

Ah, adding fallout everywhere is fun as well. :D
Well, I've decided to try replaying it after Pacal. Anyone have any tips on getting the city back without access to axemen, other than trying to find another copper site before the AI does? Keep in mind that I'm pretty low in tech, and I think that I don't have access to swordsmen.
This will be hard.

Is there a way to keep track of quests? I need to build 11 caravels and 6 harbors... (and I don't know if the three a built before I got this quest counts!)

The already constructed units and buildings count. The various advisors may help. One can see the units (per type or individual) in the military advisor (F5) and the buildings in the statistics tab of the info screen (F9).

The requirements for the quests themselves can be viewed in the quest log, one of the logs available through the button in the upper left of the main screen or through CTRL TAB. But the quest log show the initial requirement without subtracting already constructed units and buildings. So the other screens will probably be more useful for monitoring your progress.

Why does Firaxis put all the Civ installation data on three CD's (Civ IV gold edition) and two (BtS expansion)? Wouldn't it be easier to put all three (or two) on one DVD to save time and space?

My Vanilla and Warlords were on DVDs. I guess it depends on the retailer. BTS was downladed.

If I recall correctly, this has to do with the region where you buy the game; Civilization IV was released on 3 CD's in the US and on one DVD in Europe. I vaguely recall that the reason was that there was a substantial percentage of the market in the US which didn't own a DVD player yet at the time of release of Civilization IV.

So simply put: they want to be able to sell their game to as large a group as possible.

You can scout them with spies or air unit recon missions.

If you're hesistant about waging war on his terms, wait for his SoD to appear in your lands after you DoW him, annihilate it with a siege ambush, and then proceed to his territory.
