Do Willem and Augie declare @ pleased?
Both will DoW at pleased :p In fact any civ will DoW at any diplo stance if they started planning a war .

Willem will also start to plan a war ( keywords here ) while pleased with the target, while Augustus will not :D

Do AIs that plan a war give up on a war if they peek in and see that you have superior forces? Montezuma notwithstanding since he's an idiot and will DoW on Friendly with nothing.

Power Rating apparently doesn't have as much of an impact as one would think.

That's news to me - I thought even if they started planning a war, most AIs won't declare if they're currently friendly.

Is there a reference table for this somewhere?

Yes, AIs that are planning for war can get cold feet and drop the plans if their designated target looks too strong at the time of the intended declaration. "Superior forces", as in higher tech, doesn't factor into this very much, though.

EDIT: read rolo's post 2 notches down, he actually knows what he's talking about.

Here's a probably stupid one, but I can't figure this out...

Is there something that can prevent me from building an Ironworks, except:
1) Not having Steel
2) Not having enough Forges
3) Having built it already
?

In my last game, I was happily building Ironworks, until one turn I got a notification: "Amsterdam cannot continue building Ironworks", and it no longer appears in the list of possible builds in cities. I still had enough Forges. I can provide a save if someone is bored enough ;)

No. The AI, after deciding to attack a target, never checks the target power rating again until the end of the preparation of the war. What it can happen is that the AI, after some turns, decide they haven't built enough attack units ( enough in here, means numbers of units and not power ) and call out the war preps. A good example was what happened to Saladin in ALC 24 where Saladin decided that his buildup was innefective and called out the war preps vs Sisiutil.

BTW I seriously suggest everyone interested to read the thread from where the above post came from. It has a lot of information about how the AI takes their decisions to make war.

If you already have 2 national wonders in a city, you can no longer build a third one. If your Ironworks was queued behind your hermitage and hermitage finished, this could explain your problem. The same goes for Heroic Epic, National Epic, Wall Street, Oxford University, Globe Theater, Scotland Yard, and probably at least one more that I'm missing.

Nope; it was currently building (not buried in a queue) and afterwards I couldn't build it in any city. I'm starting to think that at the time I conquered a foreign city which had it, and this caused the game to bug out and think I have one (even though Nat wonders are destroyed upon conquering).

Scotland Yard isn't a National Wonder btw, it's just a special building like Academy.

Even if I didn't, it would show up in the city list but greyed out for lack of Forges. It's simply not there. And no, I didn't accidentally build it elsewhere (which is not even possible).

Actually it's possible w/ the pop-ups since they are enabled in the beginning in the turn and not updated.
Can you provide the save?

Okay, turns out I am indeed an idiot  as part of a capitulation, my would-be vassal gifted me a crappy tundra city... with the Ironworks in it. Didn't know that's possible without nat wonders being destroyed in the process. Quite a PITA actually, now I'll be scared to accept cities in such treaties if I haven't built the good nat wonders yet. Wonder what would have happened if I had the IW already built?

I got thrown off by the stat screen showing I've built 0x Ironworks.

The IW in the sucky city is destroyed.
But you can gift back the city anyways.

Very interesting. I wasn't aware that this was even possible. Looks like I'll have to be careful of accepting cities in future if I haven't built my important national wonders yet (like Ironworks/Wall Street/National Epic/Heroic Epic). Thanks for posting this. :)
