Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hi, just wondering if anyone could tell me quick what is the difference between "Standard" and "Balanced" resources, when starting up a custom game?

"Balanced" is were you have iron, horses, copper, and oil (If I got them all right.) in your fat cross. "Standard" is were all resources are placed strategically and scactered around the map. Ironically, "balanced", throws off the balance of the game. :)

Under what conditions is it a good idea to demand tribute from a non-vassal AI?
Is it ever worth demanding resources/money/techs listed in red? Or do they always refuse and give you the hit for making an arrogant demand?

Note here I'm not trying just to deliberately tick somebody off, I'm actually trying to bully a weaker opponent into giving me something for free.

Do explorers provide better hut results than a scout?

I don't think you can demand anything in red. Personally, when I go to declare war on an AI I ALWAYS demand tribute before I do so. Sometimes, I even get it.

No, they don't. Same result as scout, culture border pop or any unit within a distance of 7 of your capital provided you only have 1 city.

I only ever do that if I'm in danger of being DoWed by that AI and I want a shot at the 10 turn forced peace that a successful demand gives. Usually the diplo hit isn't worth it otherwise.

When the AI is next on my list to attack. I play huge maps with lots of civs and always go for military victory. While I'm finishing building a few more units or moving a stack to my next victim or mopping up a last city in my current war I'll demand something from my next target. If they give it it's only 10 turns of forced peace and since they are my next target the diplomacy is not an issue.

Unless you are powerful enough for them to fear your military might (they could be technically more powerful than you but busy with war somewhere else), there is really no reason to bother trying to extort something from them unless you ARE trying to provoke them into a fight with you. They will simply deny and all you get is negative diplo.

If they are Pleased or Friendly, it is safe to ask for a free tech now and then (could you spare this for a good friend)... that doesn't give negative diplo - but it does enforce 10 turns peace.

That's not exactly true, the algorithm for deciding whether to deny or not doesn't put that much weight on military power ratio actually. They often give in to a demand such as 5 gold even if they dominate you militarily, triggering a forced 10 turn peace which can sometimes save your butt.

Possible spoiler alert (depending on how you view this game). The following post describes the mechanics behind successful and unsuccessful begging/demanding:

Is there a peacful way to cut off a civilization's resources?

Sometimes in the early game, with a non-creative civ, their roads run through neutral territory. Pillaging those roads in neutral territory can seperate it from the capital and cut off resources. If the civ is your vassal you can demand that they give you the resource even if it's the only one they have.

Does pillaging a road in neutral territory cost anything diplomatically (with the AI -- I'm sure a human opponent would object!!)

No. they just send workers back to rebuild over and over and over. If you are launching an early war it can be esspecially usefull to cut a city off that has their only source of copper, horse or iron.
