Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks for the info on random civs; it's not so much who I don't want to play against but who I don't want to play as. For some reason turning up my own country of origin always bugs me. Go figure.

Yes! Have a look at the Victoria ALC (follow the link in my sig to the ALC bullpen and find the link there). I warred through most of that game, eventually conquering my continent, and won by culture by relying more heavily on artist specialists (and Great Artists) in my three culture cities than on the slider. Mind you, it helped that I (a) discovered Music first for a free GA and (b) built the Sistine Chapel for the :culture: boost to all specialists.

I ended up winning via Diplomacy, but I could of won from Space too, I was the first to build and launch my rocket. Only two wars in the entire game, Mansa Musa vs Isabella and me vs Isabella (I vassalized her captured cities, I should of finished her off but I didn't, war weariness). I would had to attack Hatty if I wanted to win by culture, I only ended up with two legendary cities.

Hi guys,

I have a bit of a problem with my Beyond the Sword; ever since I bought it about half a year ago and picked up a latest patch then, I haven't been able to see all choices in the options' menu in the Advanced Menu.

It looks like that only first half of options are only there. There are 4 subpages there, and only one and half of them exist. The last two are totally empty, for example there is nothing in the Audio page.

Is there anything I can do with it? It hasn't really stopped me from playing the last 6 months :D, but still it is annoying.

...could have won...

</grammar nazi> ;)

Haha, no problem, I get like that sometimes, I guess I didn't notice, worst part of this all is that...I typed that from my English class. /facepalm

You know back on the topic, winning by Diplomacy feels so cheesy, almost cheating, that game was kinda boring, isolated + I only did one short war. :(

Diplomatic wins are cheesier if won via the Apostolic Palace. UN diplomatic wins, however, can take some doing. It depends how you go about it. I've won diplomatic victories where I had conquered most of the world but simply felt to lazy to complete either a domination or conquest win; when you have a huge population and your vassals have to vote for you, quelle fromage. But if you have to carefully manage your relations with other nations to win the game, that's a more skillful win and one you can be proud of.
How do you upload a ZIP save for a forum game onto the forum when posting?
Post a reply (not a quick reply, use the advanced interface). Scroll down to the "Attach Files" section where you'll find a "Manage Attachments" button.

Click "Go Advanced" and scroll down. You'll see "Manage Attachments" Below the post text box and the Post Icons. I don't think you have to zip/rar/7z it up though. I've always seen saves mostly uploaded not zipped unless someone was uploading a bunch of them.

Are axemen superior to swordsman? The only difference is 1 :strength: and +10% vs. Cities. But I think axemens +50% vs. melee units is far superior anyway. I usually don't build swordsmen in that regard, does anyone else feel the same way?

My 2c: in combat, you want every little advantage you can get. If you can attack a city with a power 6 unit with inherent +10% city attack rather than a power 5 unit, you should.

However, you need to take into account hammer efficiency. Swordsmen are more expensive to build, which balances their power somewhat. But, if you have a strong production city that can build one unit a turn, then hammer efficiency stops being an issue because you're going to end up with the same number of troops whether you build axes or swords.

I used to think (pre-Prince) it was better to wait for swordsmen and then attack, but I have since learned that the cheaper hammer cost of axes plus their earlier availability makes them better for early conquest.

But like all things Civ, it depends. :)

You generally want city raider swordsmen to attack cities defended by archers, especially if you don't have any siege. You generally want axemen in the field. If the enemy uses many axemen to defend the cities, then you also want axemen to attack such cities.

So as always, it depends on the situation. If this weren't true, then one of these units would have been superfluous.

By the way, note that 6.6 strength (6+10%) is 32% more than 5 strength. That's a huge difference and you will see a huge difference in combat odds when using swordsmen against city garrison archers instead of axemen. In civ combat, it's all about relative difference.

I don't build swordsman. Just for versatility I will put one or two in a stack but otherwise I don't really like them. Part of that is timing. They come after an early rush and too long before seige.

PPL u know how "IAM" just posted and he has that "something clever and funny" quote after every1 of his posts. How do i do it?

At the top of the forum web page, click "My Account". Under "Settings and Options", click "Edit Signature".

I check my account but there is no "settings and options". I looked in every field and none said edit signature.:(
Ah, I believe you have to be a member of the forum for 30 days or so for some of the forum features to be available. Be patient!

signature is available after 5 days and 5 posts - we had to disable it for very new members along with a host of other things like private message / visitor message use due to a deluge of advertising spammers
All of the three mentioned are active after 5 days / 5 posts.
30 days / 30 posts is the wait for a custom avatar and user title.
